Dependent Origination and Impermanence
Dependent origination and impermanence are two central concepts in the Dharma that describe the mode of existence. They are not separate doctrines, but two expressions of the same reality: dependent origination explains how phenomena arise, while impermanence describes their temporal nature. Understanding their relationship is fundamental to right view.
Dependent origination means that all phenomena arise in dependence upon causes and conditions. Nothing exists in isolation or possesses an inherent essence. Every phenomenon is a temporary aggregation of multiple conditions, and without these conditions, it cannot exist. Thus, dependent origination denies the existence of independent, permanent, and self-sufficient entities.
Impermanence is the direct description of dependent origination in the dimension of time. Since all phenomena arise from conditions, and conditions themselves are subject to change, the phenomena they produce must also be in constant flux. Impermanence does not refer to occasional change, but to a continuous, universal, and irreversible process of transformation. Whatever is dependently arisen must be impermanent.
From a logical perspective, dependent origination and impermanence are inseparably linked: because phenomena depend on conditions, they lack independence; because they lack independence, they cannot remain unchanged; because they cannot remain unchanged, they must inevitably transform and cease. Impermanence is therefore not an added property, but an intrinsic consequence of dependent origination.
At the level of experience, this structure can be verified through observation of body and mind. The body undergoes constant metabolism and decay; feelings arise and pass; thoughts continuously shift and dissolve. No state persists unchanged, and no self exists independently of these processes. Dependent origination explains their conditionality, while impermanence reveals their dynamic flow.
One common misunderstanding is to interpret impermanence as a negative or pessimistic view. In fact, it is not a value judgment but a factual description. It is precisely because things are impermanent that change is possible; because there is no fixed essence, transformation and practice become meaningful.
Another misunderstanding is to reduce dependent origination to a simple linear chain of cause and effect. In reality, it is a network of interacting conditions rather than a single causal sequence. The arising of any result depends on the convergence of multiple factors, not on a single determining cause. Dependent origination is therefore better understood as a system of conditions rather than linear causality.
In practice, understanding dependent origination and impermanence has direct liberative significance. It dismantles attachment to a permanent self, weakens reified views of phenomena, and shifts attention from grasping at outcomes to observing and transforming conditions. As conditions are understood and altered, the structure of suffering begins to dissolve.
Thus, dependent origination and impermanence are not abstract theories, but precise descriptions of reality. Through deep observation and understanding, one establishes a view grounded not in belief but in direct insight, and proceeds to transcend ignorance and attachment, moving toward liberation.
