难国王得度因缘(一)
世尊在舍卫国只树给孤独园弘化之时,有千二百五十位比丘、五百位菩萨,常随佛学,还有帝王、人民、无数天龙鬼神,闻法护教。
当时,难国的国王名分陂檀,不相信佛法而崇信外道,他每天在王宫施饭给万余位外道尼揵子。难国王傲慢的认为自己的智慧天下无人能及,却因为担心智慧从腹部而出,便以薄铁片包在腹部前面。国王想为太子娶妻,问左右群臣:「天下可有像我这样智慧通达的人?如果有,我将迎娶此人的女儿为太子妃。」大臣领受国王旨意,寻遍全国,却找不到这样的人,国王也知道国内是找不到的,于是派遣使者到他国,寻找智者的女儿。
使者寻到舍卫国时,问舍卫国人民:「贵国可有修道的贤德之人?」国人回答:「有。」使者问:「此人何姓?名字是什么?」国人回答:「名字为『佛』。」使者问:「佛可有女儿?」国人回答:「佛,是修道之人,没有女儿。」使者问:「是否还有其他贤德之人?」国人回答:「有一人,名叫阿难邠坻,他是一位大贤者,乐善好施,精进于道业,可以说是我国之中第一贤者,他有一位甚好的女儿。」「为什么是国中第一贤者?」「此贤者曾与太子祇,共同买了八十顷庄园田地供养佛,又以大象驮运黄金数千万亿,用来照顾这庄园田地,他不贪恋财宝,一心向善。」
使者听了国人赞扬此女之贤善,非常欢喜,于是立即返回本国,向国王报告经过。难国王听后,立刻书文一纸,随即令太子与群臣百官,庄严车驾,载满珍宝,一群人相随到了舍卫国。太子暂住在城外,使者入城至贤者阿难邠坻庄舍。守门人入内向主人阿难邠坻报告:「主人!门外有使者来。」阿难邠坻亲自出去应门,开门却看见一个黑丑如鬼的人,便惊叫:「你是什么人?」使者回答:「我是难国王派遣来的使者。」阿难邠坻问:「请问阁下来访,有什么事吗?」使者说:「我是来宣达我国国王的旨意,难国王虽然与您不曾相见,但是听往来之人赞叹您是一位功德无量的大贤者,精进于道业,对您甚是敬重,听说您有一女,所以特别来为我国太子求亲,并且难国王亲自写一封书信给您。」阿难邠坻觉得这件事实在太唐突了!很想斥责对方,但还是隐忍不说,于是招呼使者进来,互相问候。使者递上难国王的书信给阿难邠坻,阿难邠坻阅信后告诉使者:「这件事我得向我的导师报告,如果您愿意等待,我将告诉您结果如何。」使者很愿意留在阿难邠坻家等消息。
阿难邠坻见到世尊,先顶礼世尊,而后长跪合掌禀白佛:「世尊!此刻难国王派遣使者来到我家,其人形状黑丑如鬼,说是要为王太子求亲,娶我女儿三摩竭,我该如何是好?」佛回答:「你就答应这门亲事吧!」阿难邠坻说:「世尊!使者形状黑丑如鬼,想必王太子也是如此!我曾听世尊说,难国王师事外道尼揵子,他们都是裸身,不穿搭衣物,外形丑黑之状,岂不是会吓坏我女儿吗?」佛言:「不会的,你就答应这门亲事吧!因为三摩竭的因缘,将会度化难国王及裸形外道八万人。」
阿难邠坻心里很不情愿,但也不敢再问佛,回家告诉使者:「阁下奉贵国王之命令,远来提亲,这是大好之事,我一定成全这门亲事。」使者听到阿难邠坻的允诺,立即向暂居城外的太子回报,并相随太子来到阿难邠坻庄舍。一行人从车上搬运带来的金银及聘礼,送交阿难邠坻。阿难邠坻宴请客人,招待客人饮食、娱乐七天。七日后,阿难邠坻遣送奴婢、衣服、无数的珍宝,给三摩竭作为陪嫁,太子与三摩竭等一行人,相偕还归难国。
难国王见到太子与太子媳回来,高兴得不得了,便设宴邀请其师尼揵若陀弗,及万二千弟子入宫欢庆。难国王、夫人及太子,都手持餐具,并传呼三摩竭出来,打算一起分饭食供奉入宫的裸形诸师。三摩竭行至第三道门时,遥见尽是身无衣物的裸形人,三摩竭大惊!人居然不穿衣服?这与狗、畜生类,有什么差别!三摩竭便两手遮面,立即回到自己房中,不肯再出来。裸形诸师很愤恨三摩竭的举动,他们告诉国王:「从何处找来这个不吉利的女人?还让她留在王宫?要尽快赶她出去,若不赶走她,国家将会因为而衰败。」裸形诸师不愿意再留下来用餐,要即刻离去,国王就告诉诸师:「我会为了大师赶走此女,明天她就不再出现于宫内。」裸形诸师用餐完毕就离去了。
当天,太子回到三摩竭住所,三摩竭怒气未消,令婢女紧闭大门,拒绝太子进入。经过四、五天了,太子不敢再次前往。夫人问太子:「你为何不去子媳住所呢?」太子默然不语,夫人心里知道太子被拒于门外了。于是亲自前往三摩竭住所,诘问:「我迎娶妳为太子媳,妳理当承事我子,为何却折腾、侮辱我子?」三摩竭回答:「夫人!您与太子及全国人民所事奉的老师,都是身无衣物的裸形人;狗畜生也是裸身无衣,裸形人与狗畜生没有差别。」夫人听了,感觉不安与羞辱,回宫向国王说:「大王!您自认精进道业与智慧是举世无双,国中没有合乎大王之意的人可作亲家,大王派遣群臣千里求媳而求得此女,如今此女无所畏惧的折腾我子,还骂我所事奉的裸行诸师,与狗畜生一样。」
国王听夫人这么说后,便亲自到三摩竭居所。三摩竭因为实在是看不惯国王信奉裸形外道,所以不肯开门向国王作礼。国王就遥问:「因为妳有贤善的美德,所以我们行了八千里路迎娶妳。如今,妳既侮辱我的老师,又当面骂夫人及太子,是什么原因?」三摩竭回答:「大王!是的,我的确说大王的老师、夫人、太子、及国中人民,与狗畜生没有差别。」难国王惊呼:「妳这个小女子!居然羞辱我到这种程度!我为了防止智慧从腹部出去,以薄铁片包在我腹部前面,我日日供养万余道人饭食,有谁能比得上我?妳现在居然当面这般辱骂我们?」三摩竭说:「大王及国中人民所事奉的老师,日常连衣服都不穿,裸形相视,会有什么道?即使有道,也不是尊贵的正道,大王虽日日供养万余此辈之人,他们都是不值得我恭敬之辈,是我所唾弃之类!」难国王顿时词穷,内心想着,应该要找谁商议此事。
于是难国王去谒见他的老师尼揵若陀弗,先向师行礼,而后禀白老师:「我因为要为太子娶一位贤德之妇,在舍卫国觅得此媳,迎娶回来后,也相安无事。没想到日前,既折辱了大师,而今又肆意谩骂我及夫人、太子,将我们比作狗畜生。她是儿媳妇,却没有以该有的礼节奉事我,我现在应当怎么做才好?」其师告诉大王:「您回去问她:『妳国家的人民,所奉事的老师与我国人民奉事的老师有什么不同?』大王问话时,切勿瞠怒,慢慢的好言相问,应当会有满意的答案。」
难国王受老师所教,去三摩竭居所问:「妳国家的人民奉事的老师,可胜过我国人民奉事的老师?」三摩竭说:「我国中的人民所奉事的导师,是世上最为尊贵的世尊,世尊所教化的男女皆穿衣裳,长幼、尊卑,都依循礼节,不会赤身裸体相见。世尊的常随弟子,有各种果位上的觉者,他们能入火不烧、入水不溺。世尊已教授数千亿万人,使闻法修行者都能得度,乃至契入解脱道。世尊能典揽三千大千日月、万二千亿天地,变化无量,能知过去、现在、未来之事,身有三十二相、八十种好,世尊德行圆满,智慧通达,诸天天帝、天人、人民皆来顶礼世尊,请教法义。」难国王听了三摩竭所说,顿时踊跃欢喜,生起景仰、渴望相见佛陀之心。(待续)

The Karmic Conditions for the Conversion of King Nan (Part I)
At the time when the World-Honored One was teaching and transforming beings at Jetavana in Śrāvastī, there were one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus and five hundred bodhisattvas constantly following the Buddha in learning, as well as kings, citizens, and innumerable devas, nāgas, and spirits who listened to the Dharma and protected the teaching.
At that time, the king of the country of Nan was named Fenbotan. He did not believe in the Buddha-Dharma but instead revered heterodox paths. Every day in the palace he offered meals to more than ten thousand ascetics of the Nirgrantha sect. The king arrogantly believed that no one in the world could equal his wisdom, yet fearing that wisdom might leave from his abdomen, he wrapped a thin iron plate around the front of his belly. Wishing to find a wife for the crown prince, he asked his ministers, “Is there anyone in the world as wise and insightful as I am? If so, I will take that person’s daughter as the prince’s consort.” The ministers searched throughout the land but found no such person. Knowing none could be found domestically, the king sent envoys abroad to seek the daughter of a wise man.
When the envoy reached Śrāvastī, he asked the people, “Are there virtuous cultivators in your country?” They replied, “Yes.” He asked, “What is his name?” They said, “He is called ‘Buddha.’” The envoy asked, “Does the Buddha have a daughter?” They replied, “The Buddha is one who practices the Way; he has no daughter.” The envoy then asked, “Are there other virtuous people?” The people said, “There is one named Anāthapiṇḍada. He is a great sage, generous and diligent in the path, and can be called the foremost virtuous person in our land. He has a very good daughter.” “Why is he considered the foremost?” “He once, together with Prince Jeta, purchased eighty qing of land to offer to the Buddha, and used countless loads of gold transported by elephants to maintain it. He is not attached to wealth and is wholeheartedly devoted to goodness.”
Hearing the people praise the girl’s virtue, the envoy was delighted and immediately returned to report to the king. Upon hearing this, the king wrote a letter at once and ordered the prince and officials to prepare a grand procession with abundant treasures, and they all proceeded to Śrāvastī. The prince stayed outside the city while the envoy entered to the residence of Anāthapiṇḍada. The gatekeeper reported, “Master! An envoy has arrived.” Anāthapiṇḍada personally went to the gate and saw a dark, ugly man like a ghost, and exclaimed, “Who are you?” The envoy replied, “I am sent by the king of Nan.” Anāthapiṇḍada asked, “What is your purpose?” The envoy said, “I come to convey the king’s intent. Though he has not met you, he has heard praise of your immeasurable merit and diligence in the path and holds you in high esteem. Hearing you have a daughter, he seeks her hand for the prince and has written you a letter.” Though feeling this was abrupt, Anāthapiṇḍada restrained himself, received the envoy, and after reading the letter said, “I must report this to my teacher. If you are willing to wait, I will inform you of the result.” The envoy agreed to stay.
Anāthapiṇḍada went to the World-Honored One, bowed, and said, “World-Honored One! The king of Nan has sent an envoy to my house. His appearance is dark and ugly like a ghost. He seeks my daughter Samagha for the prince. What should I do?” The Buddha replied, “You should agree to this marriage.” Anāthapiṇḍada said, “But if the envoy is like this, surely the prince is the same. I have heard that the king follows naked ascetics; will this not frighten my daughter?” The Buddha said, “It will not. Agree to the marriage. Through Samagha’s conditions, the king and eighty thousand naked ascetics will be converted.”
Though unwilling, Anāthapiṇḍada did not question further. He returned and told the envoy, “Since you have come by royal command, this is a good matter. I will fulfill this marriage.” The envoy reported to the prince, and together they came to the residence. They presented gold, silver, and betrothal gifts. Anāthapiṇḍada hosted them for seven days. Afterward, he sent servants, clothing, and countless treasures as dowry for Samagha, and the prince and Samagha returned to the country of Nan.
The king was overjoyed and held a feast, inviting his teacher Nirgrantha Nataputta and twelve thousand disciples. They summoned Samagha to distribute food to the naked ascetics. When she reached the third gate and saw the naked figures, she was shocked and returned to her chamber, refusing to come out. The ascetics were furious and urged the king to expel her, warning of ruin. The king promised to remove her the next day, and the ascetics departed.
That day, the prince returned to her residence, but she shut the gates and refused him entry. After several days, the queen visited and questioned her. Samagha replied that those whom they revered were naked like animals, no different from beasts. The queen felt humiliated and reported to the king.
The king went personally to confront her. She refused to open the door. The king asked the reason for her insults. She affirmed her words. The king angrily defended himself, but she replied that naked ascetics lacked true dignity or right path and were not worthy of respect. The king was left speechless and sought counsel.
He consulted his teacher, who advised him to calmly ask about the difference between their teachers. Following this, the king returned and asked her.
Samagha replied, “The teacher revered in my country is the World-Honored One, the most exalted in the world. His disciples wear proper clothing and follow propriety. Among them are realized beings who are unharmed by fire or water. The Buddha has taught countless beings, leading them to liberation. He possesses thirty-two marks and eighty excellent qualities, perfect virtue and wisdom, and is revered by gods and humans alike.” Hearing this, the king rejoiced and developed a deep aspiration to see the Buddha.
