The Merits of King Aśoka’s Adornment of Stupas and Monasteries
In the past, there was a King Aśoka who constructed one thousand two hundred stupas and monasteries within his realm. Later, he fell gravely ill. A monk came to visit him, and upon seeing the monk, Aśoka was overwhelmed with sorrow and could not restrain his grief.
The monk consoled him, saying: “Great King, the merits you have accumulated throughout your life are beyond measure. You should broaden your mind and not feel any regret.”
Aśoka replied: “Even if death were to come, I would have no regret. The reason for my sorrow is this: in order to adorn these one thousand two hundred stupas and monasteries, I specially commissioned one thousand two hundred golden canopies. I had hoped to hang them upon the stupas myself and offer flowers in veneration, so that the act of offering would be complete. Yet now I have fallen gravely ill and fear I cannot fulfill this wish, and thus I feel deep sorrow.”
Hearing this, the monk said, “Very well!” He immediately joined his palms and made a sincere aspiration, enabling Aśoka to behold all the stupas in this world. Manifesting spiritual powers, he caused all one thousand two hundred stupas to appear before Aśoka. Upon seeing them, Aśoka was filled with great joy, and more than half of his illness was cured. He then took the golden canopies and golden flowers, wishing to hang them upon the stupas himself. At that moment, the stupas rose and descended to a height within his reach, allowing him to personally hang and offer them.
After fulfilling his wish, Aśoka’s illness was completely cured. He then generated an even greater vow, and as a result, his lifespan was extended by twenty-five years. Thereafter, he continued to cultivate vast merits, with his resolve never regressing.
