Dharma Talk
The Passing of Venerable Kāśyapa
“World-Honored One has entered nirvāṇa!” Upon hearing this news, all disciples of the Buddha were deeply grieved. Many arhats even resolved to follow the Buddha into nirvāṇa.
Venerable Kāśyapa, upon hearing this, gathered five hundred arhats and declared to them: “The Buddha has entered extinction. If we are to propagate the sacred teachings of the Buddha and enable beings to realize the inherent nature of true thusness, we must assemble the Dharma teachings. Therefore, you must now use your spiritual powers to travel to as many world-systems as there are sands in the Ganges, and gather eighty-four thousand arhats to convene here for the compilation of the scriptures.”
Among the Buddha’s disciples, Ānanda alone had memorized all the teachings of the Buddha and could recite them, but since he had not yet attained arhatship, he was not included in this assembly. To help Ānanda progress on the path, Venerable Kāśyapa used a stern prompting method, urging him to resolve firmly. Ānanda practiced with great diligence day and night, and after seven days, he completely eradicated his defilements and attained arhatship. When everyone learned of this, they rejoiced greatly, and the heavenly beings also came to sing praises.
At the council of compilation, Venerable Ānanda ascended the seat to recite the Buddha’s teachings. Venerable Kāśyapa especially instructed him to organize the scriptures according to their categories—such as the Bodhisattva Piṭaka, Śrāvaka Piṭaka, and Vinaya Piṭaka—each placed in its proper collection, and to be extremely careful with every word so that nothing would be omitted. When Ānanda recited, “Thus have I heard, at one time the Buddha was…,” Venerable Kāśyapa and all the arhats could not help but weep. They sighed, saying, “Life is impermanent, like a dream or illusion. Yesterday we saw the Buddha; today, hearing the Dharma, it is already ‘thus have I heard.’”
After the compilation of the scriptures, Venerable Kāśyapa continued to lead the Saṅgha for more than twenty years. Finally, he transmitted the Dharma to Venerable Ānanda and instructed him: “I am about to enter nirvāṇa. I now entrust the Great Dharma to you; you must protect it well and ensure its continuation.” Before departing, Kāśyapa went to bid farewell to King Ajātaśatru, but as the king was resting, he left the message through a guard.
Venerable Kāśyapa went to Mount Kukkutapāda, sat upon a grass mat, and said: “I now wear the rag robe and hold the Buddha’s golden robe. I will use spiritual powers to preserve this physical body until the future Buddha Maitreya appears, and then transmit to him the golden robe passed down from Buddha to Buddha.” After speaking, the earth trembled in six ways. Kāśyapa further said: “When Venerable Ānanda and King Ajātaśatru come to see me, the mountain peak will open for them; after they depart, it will close again.”
Śakra, lord of the gods, scattered heavenly flowers in offering and bowed sincerely. After the homage, the peak of Mount Kukkutapāda closed, covering the body of the Venerable.
At that time, the mountain spirit of Kukkuṭapāda wept and said, “Today the Venerable has entered nirvāṇa; it is as if the mountain of Dharma has collapsed, the Dharma boat has sunk, the Dharma tree has broken, and the Dharma sea has dried up. Māra and his retinue rejoice, while all devas and humans grieve.”
On that day, King Ajātaśatru dreamed that a celestial pillar had broken and awoke in fear. His guards then reported that Venerable Kāśyapa had come to bid farewell before entering nirvāṇa. Hearing this, the king was deeply sorrowful and immediately requested Venerable Ānanda to accompany him to Mount Kukkutapāda.
Indeed, when Ānanda and King Ajātaśatru arrived, the mountain naturally opened. They saw Venerable Kāśyapa seated firmly in samādhi, his body still covered with beautiful heavenly flowers. After making offerings and bowing, they departed with great sorrow.
