Joyful Praise: Benefiting Oneself and Others
One day, the Buddha and his constant retinue of one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus went to Śrāvastī to teach the Dharma. Before the Buddha entered the city, five hundred devas had already caused fragrant winds to blow through all streets and alleys, so that impurities such as filth and excrement naturally sank into the ground. Moreover, fragrant rain fell, moistening and purifying the roads, and flowers were scattered as offerings, filling the city with purity and fragrance everywhere.
When the king of Śrāvastī, his ministers, and the people saw such auspicious signs, they knew the Buddha was about to enter the city. They immediately laid down their work, joyfully swept the streets, scattered flowers, and burned incense. Some spread cloth on the ground, some loosened their hair to cover the earth, some raised banners and canopies, while others played music or performed dances to welcome the Buddha’s arrival.
When the Buddha and the bhikṣus entered the city, everyone joined their palms in reverence and gazed upon the Buddha’s majestic marks with utmost sincerity. At that time, a Brahmin saw this scene. Although he wished to buy incense and flowers to offer to the Buddha, he was too poor to fulfill his intention. Thus, he joined the welcoming crowd with the purest reverent mind. When he beheld the Buddha, he praised him in verse:
“Your form shines like purple gold,
The thirty-two marks are clear.
All beings who behold you
Are filled with joy.
Seeing the Buddha, the mind leaps up,
All sorrow is extinguished.
Eternally crossing the ocean of birth and death,
I bow to the Great Peace.”
At that moment, the Buddha smiled gently. Five-colored rays of light emerged from his mouth, and each ray emitted countless further rays. At the tip of each light appeared a seven-jeweled lotus, upon which manifested Buddhas illuminating the ten directions. From the great hells below up to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven above, all places were bathed in the Buddha’s light.
All devas and humans in the three-thousandfold world, upon seeing this radiance, rejoiced greatly and left their palaces to come before the Buddha. Among them were those who attained liberation by hearing the Dharma, those who attained liberation upon seeing the light, those who attained liberation upon hearing the teachings of the manifested Buddhas, and those who attained liberation by following the light to the Buddha.
Beings suffering in hell were temporarily released; animals developed wholesome minds and ceased harming one another; hungry ghosts obtained hundred-flavored food and their greed was extinguished. Countless beings became cured: the blind gained sight, the deaf could hear, the mute could speak, the hunched became upright, those unable to walk regained movement, and all illnesses were healed. Prisoners were freed from bondage.
Seeing these auspicious manifestations, all devas and humans in the great trichiliocosm felt joy and purity in their minds. Some attained the first, second, third fruits, or Arhatship; some attained Pratyekabuddhahood; others aroused the Mahāyāna aspiration and became firmly established on the path of enlightenment, with countless beings attaining realization.
The Buddha’s light then illuminated the ten directions, circled the Buddha three times, and reentered between the World-Honored One’s eyebrows. Ānanda, seeing this extraordinary scene, knelt with joined palms and asked, “World-Honored One, the Tathāgatas do not smile or emit light from their bodies without cause. What is the cause and condition for your smile today? May the World-Honored One compassionately explain for us.”
The Buddha said to Ānanda, “Do you see that Brahmin who praised the Buddha in verse? With an extremely pure and sincere mind, he praised the Tathāgata. In the next thirteen kalpas, he will be born naturally in heaven and among humans, and will not fall into the three evil realms or the eight difficult conditions. His appearance will be dignified, his eloquence unobstructed, and his wisdom clear. All will praise him. In the future, when he leaves home to cultivate the path, he will attain Pratyekabuddhahood and be named ‘Joyful Delight.’”
Upon hearing this teaching, the assembly was filled with Dharma joy, and they sang and praised the Buddha’s supreme virtues.
