快目王施眼因缘(三)

  佛陀继续告诉阿难:「所有百姓臣子听闻快目王将在七天后,把眼睛挖出来布施给盲眼婆罗门,皆奔往快目王住所,八万四千诸王臣民以身投地,含泪啼哭对国王说:『我们阎浮提众生,都是蒙受大王您恩泽庇佑,如果您真的要挖眼睛布施给盲眼婆罗门,失去了双眼,一切人民也将失去依怙。希望国王能改变主意,不要为了一个人而舍弃我们。』所有一万大臣也都以身倒地,并仰头禀白:『大王您何不怜悯我们?仅仅为了满一个人的愿,却舍弃了我们。恳请国王回心转意,不要给他您的眼睛。』两万夫人也在大王面前请求:『只希望您改变主意,千万不要施舍眼睛,让我们安心!』五百太子们也都聚集在大王面前哭泣着说:『希望父王您怜悯我们,不要布施眼睛,这样才能继续抚养我们!』

  这时,戒贤太子更向快目王请求:『我愿意代替父王,挖自己的眼睛给盲眼婆罗门。即便我因此而死,也不会损害到整个国家的利益;可是如果父王您失去了眼睛,所有人民将无所依靠。』快目王告诉大众:『累劫生命长流中,我生死流转无数,自身所堆积的骨骸高过须弥山;斩刺我身所流的血汇聚成河,倍于四海;饮过母乳的量,超过四大江;遭逢生离死别而愁忧啼哭的泪水,多于四海。在地狱之中,除了经历烧煮砍刺,身体遭到破坏,更是弃眼无数;饿鬼道中,变换不同身形,皆受火烧之苦,无数眼睛也被毁坏;畜生道中,更是争相食噉,种种死伤难以计数;生在人间,中途夭折,或为了争夺色欲而相互设计图谋,残杀伤害,如是身体惨遭破散,殃累眼睛亦遭破坏;纵然生在天界,此身也不长久。』

  快目王继续说:『从久远劫以来,我受尽苦难,在三界中轮回五道,为贪瞠痴烦恼所迷惑,即便将身体粉碎成尘,也不曾为了上求佛道而布施己身。此眼臭秽,危脆不堪,不久必当烂坏,现在正是我布施的机缘,希望布施双眼,冀望求佛无上一切智眼。如果愿望达成,我一定会让你们得清净慧眼,希望你们不要再阻拦我求无上道的心意。』

  在场所有人听了这些话后,都静默不语。快目王就向左右两旁的人说:『现在可以挑出我的眼睛了。』左右的大臣们异口同声说:『我宁可撕破揉烂自己的身体,成芥子般种子微小,也不愿举手将大王的眼睛取下!』大王就告诉臣子们说:『那你们就找一位敢挖出我眼睛的人来吧!』

  诸臣找到这样一个人后,就带来到大王身边。快目王把刀递给他,命令他挖出眼睛。当他挖出一只眼睛放在大王的手掌中,大王就发誓:『我布施此眼,誓求无上佛道。如果真的能因此成就佛道,这位婆罗门得到了我的眼睛,一定可以立刻重见光明。』发誓完毕,快目王就把眼睛安置于盲眼婆罗门的眼眶中,婆罗门的双眼立刻获得了光明,看到了国王及所有与会的人,他非常欢喜,马上告诉快目王:『得到大王您一只眼睛,就足够了,请大王留着另一只眼睛吧!』快目王回答:『我已经答应要给你两只眼睛,不能违背承诺。』于是再挖出另一只眼睛放在手掌里,并再次发誓:『我布施此眼,誓求无上佛道。若真能成就佛道,至诚不虚妄,这位婆罗门得到了我的眼睛,必然重见光明。』便替盲眼婆罗门安置另一只眼睛,果真立即就可以看得见。

  正当此时,天地震动,诸天宫殿也都动摇,诸天人惊怕恐惧,不知道发生了什么事。即见菩萨挖眼布施与人,都飞到快目王身边,抛撒各种香花供养国王,并赞叹:『大王所作所为,甚为殊胜!』天帝便向前问道:『这实在是殊胜!您做这样的布施,是希望求得什么回报呢?』快目王回答:『我不冀求三界之欲乐,只希望以此布施功德,誓求无上佛道,度脱一切众生,达到涅槃清净之乐。』

  天帝问:『您挖了双眼,如此痛苦,会不会起瞠恚之心而后悔?』快目王回答不曾后悔,也没有瞠恨之心。天帝又说:『可是我看你流这么多血,身体有所毁损,还说心中没有悔恨,令人难以置信。』快目王立刻再发誓:『我挖了两眼布施,绝无悔恨之意,发愿上求佛道,必定能够成就。如果此言不虚假,我的双眼就会立刻恢复如前。』语落,快目王的两眼复原,甚至比从前更明朗清净,看得更远更透彻。诸天大众及一切与会者都称扬赞叹,欢喜雀跃不已。快目王告诉婆罗门:『现在我给了你眼睛,你已经可以看得见,未来我成就佛道时,更要让你得清净慧眼。』

  大王便带着婆罗门到宝库,请他任意拿取一担珍宝,就让他回国。这位婆罗门回到自己的国境后,波罗陀跋弥王亲自出城迎接,见了面就问:『你得到眼睛了吗?』婆罗门说:『得到了,我现在看得见了。』大王再问:『快目王现在是死?是活?』婆罗门回答:『快目王发大誓愿,眼睛不但复原,而且比以前更好。』波罗陀跋弥王听完,便脑闷愤结,心裂而死。」

  佛告诉阿难:「当时的须提罗快目王,就是现在的我。波罗陀跋弥,就是现在的调达。当时向我乞求眼睛的婆罗门,就是今天的这位盲眼婆罗门。过去我给与他眼睛,今天他见到了我,不但肉眼能见,更得清净慧眼。我为了你们,世世修行苦行,积功累德,今日才能成就佛道,你们更应该勤勉用功,寻求出离。」

  与会大众听闻后,感念佛陀慈悲恩泽,发愤身体力行,当中有因此而证得须陀洹果、斯陀含果、阿那含果、阿罗汉果,也有因此发起无上道心者。阿难尊者及与会大众,听到佛所言说,皆欢喜信受,顶戴奉行。(全文完)

The Karmic Cause of King Kuai Mu Giving His Eyes (Part III)

  The Buddha continued to tell Ānanda: “When all the citizens and ministers heard that King Kuai Mu would, after seven days, gouge out his eyes to give to a blind brāhmaṇa, they all rushed to his residence. Eighty-four thousand officials and people threw themselves to the ground, weeping and saying, ‘We beings of Jambudvīpa all rely on your protection. If you lose your eyes, all people will lose their refuge. Please change your mind and do not abandon us for one person.’ Ten thousand ministers also prostrated and pleaded, ‘Great King, why not have compassion on us? Do not give him your eyes.’ Twenty thousand consorts and five hundred princes likewise wept and begged him not to proceed.”

  At that time, Prince Jie Xian said, ‘I am willing to give my own eyes in place of my father. Even if I die, it will not harm the nation, but if the king loses his eyes, all people will lose their support.’ The king replied, ‘Through countless kalpas, I have wandered in birth and death. My bones have piled higher than Mount Sumeru, my blood has flowed like oceans, my tears exceed the seas. In hell, as a hungry ghost, as an animal, and as a human, I have suffered immeasurable destruction, including the loss of countless eyes. Even in the heavens, life is not lasting.’

  The king continued, ‘For endless kalpas, I have been deluded by greed, anger, and ignorance. Even if my body were ground to dust, I have not yet given it for the supreme path. These eyes are impure and fragile, destined to decay. Now is the time to give them. I wish to attain the unsurpassed wisdom-eye of Buddhahood and enable all of you to gain pure insight. Do not obstruct my resolve.’

  Hearing this, all fell silent. The king ordered his attendants to remove his eyes, but none dared. Finally, a man was found. The king handed him a knife and ordered him to proceed. When one eye was removed, the king vowed that through this act he would attain Buddhahood and restore sight to the brāhmaṇa. The eye was placed, and the brāhmaṇa immediately regained vision. When asked to keep the second eye, the king refused and gave it as well, making the same vow, and the brāhmaṇa fully regained sight.

  At that moment, heaven and earth trembled, and the gods were astonished. They came to offer flowers and praise the king’s deed. The king declared that he did not seek worldly pleasures, but only Buddhahood and the liberation of all beings.

  The heavenly king questioned whether he felt regret. The king denied any regret and vowed that if his sincerity were true, his eyes would be restored. Immediately, his eyes were restored, clearer than before. All present rejoiced and praised him. The king told the brāhmaṇa that in the future, he would grant him the wisdom-eye as well.

  The king then allowed the brāhmaṇa to take treasures and return home. Upon hearing of the king’s restoration, another king died from shock and grief.

  The Buddha told Ānanda, ‘The king of that time was myself. The opposing king is now Devadatta. The brāhmaṇa is the present one. Because of past causes, he not only sees with physical eyes but has gained the wisdom-eye. Through countless lifetimes of practice, I have accumulated merit to attain Buddhahood. You should diligently cultivate and seek liberation.’

  Upon hearing this, the assembly rejoiced, practiced accordingly, and many attained various stages of realization. All respectfully accepted and upheld the teaching.
