慈心龙王消伏怨害
菩萨在久远劫前的过去生,曾因为瞠心的缘故而堕为龙身,具有「气毒、眼毒、触毒」三种毒;又因为过去所修的福报业缘,身体色彩如七宝聚集,不需要日月的照映就能自然散发出光明。它的四周经常有无量的龙群围绕着,龙王亦能变化为容貌端正的人身。它们住在毘陀山偏远的地方,那里有许多森林树木,花果非常茂盛,池沼清净,非常安乐,龙群时常在那里游戏玩乐,经历了无量百千万岁。
这时,有一金翅鸟王,从空中飞翔而下,想掠取龙为食。每当金翅鸟飞来的时候,总是山崩地裂、泉池干涸。龙群看到或听到金翅鸟来侵袭,都感到非常慌张、害怕,身上的璎珞都散落、碎裂满地。龙群议论纷纷:「现在大敌来袭了!金翅鸟尖锐的嘴如金刚一样锐利,若被它啄触就会碎裂,它就要来吃我们了,该怎么办呢?」
龙王起初听到龙群的恐惧,非常忧心与烦恼,但是由于过去世的善根,它很快就放下烦恼,而思惟:「我的心本无所畏惧,只是一时因为金翅鸟王的大威力而忧恼。事实上,只有我能对抗金翅鸟王,保护龙群。」于是龙王告诉龙群:「你们只要跟随在我后面,就不会被金翅鸟所害。如果我不能守护你们,就算拥有这么大的龙身又有什么用?」
于是龙王心无畏怯地来到金翅鸟王面前说:「金翅鸟王!虽然你常伤害我们龙族,但是我对于你却无任何伤害之意。我因为往昔造了恶业而得此龙身,虽然具有气毒、眼毒、触毒三种毒杀能力,但我从未使用这三种毒去伤害众生。以我的能力足以抵挡任何想伤害我的敌人,我也可以远去他方,使你找不到。现在我不愿独自离开,是因为有许多龙来依附我;我们不想和你战斗,是因为对你并没有任何怨恨心。」
金翅鸟王问:「你真的对我无怨恨心吗?」
龙王说:「我虽是兽身,但深刻地理解因果业报之理,清楚知道即使是小恶,所召感的果报也很重,因果如影随形不相离!我们现在堕恶道,都是因为过去世造作恶业的缘故。你应常常忆念如来所说的道理:怨恨心不能解除怨怼之结,唯有慈忍心才可消除怨结;就像是将干柴投入大火之中,火只会越烧越猛烈,烧之不尽,以瞠报瞠的道理也是一样的。」
金翅鸟听完龙王诚恳的劝说,怨恨止息了而且生起善念,向龙王说:「你以慈忍之力,息灭了我的瞠恚,如同以泉水浇熄炽盛的火焰,使我的心顿时得到清凉。」
龙王又说:「无量劫前,我与你都曾于世尊处受持戒法,因为心不清净,又没有坚持戒法,为求名闻利养而相互嫉妒、憎恨,你我因为如此而结怨,并堕于恶道。我曾发露忏悔,所以能深记于心并受持戒法,你因为不愿忏悔,遮掩恶行与隐藏过失,所以忘记过去的事,现在你应当坚持正念,发慈忍心,修清净梵行。」
金翅鸟王说:「我从今日起,愿普施诸龙安稳、无所畏惧。」说完就离开龙宫,回到它原来住的地方。
龙王安慰龙群,又问:「你们看见金翅鸟心里会害怕吗?」大众都说:「心里有极大的恐怖与畏惧﹗」
龙王说:「世间的众生若是看见你们,也都是这么害怕、恐惧!你们爱惜生命,与众生爱惜自己的生命一样,所以你们爱惜自己的生命,也要想到其他众生的生命,而起大慈心;现在因为我修习慈心的因缘,使金翅鸟已回到它本来的地方,不会再来伤害我们。一切有情众生,在生死轮回中流转,能够作为依靠的莫过于慈心。大慈心犹如良药,能治愈众生的烦恼重病;大慈心犹如明灯,能破除众生贪瞠痴三毒的黑暗;大慈心犹如船筏,能帮助众生渡过三界的生死苦海;大慈心犹如伴侣,能伴随众生越过生死险难恶道;大慈心犹如摩尼宝珠,能满足众生所求的善愿。我在过去世,由于没有慈心,所以堕此龙身,不得解脱。众生若常存慈心,则能生出无量善法,闭塞一切愚痴昏暗,烦恼也就不得其门而入,常生于人天,得安乐解脱。」龙群听了这些话之后,便远离瞠恚,努力修行慈心。
龙王见龙族同类因为听从自己的劝化而改变,欢喜的说:「善哉!我今所作已办,使你们去除无量恶毒,改以善法、净法观照自己;我将为你们建立清净八戒斋法,你们要奉持。阎浮提世界的众生以八戒法水洗涤身心,使心得清净,远离贪欲、瞠恚、愚痴等烦恼,作为往人天道路的资粮。若能以清净心持八戒斋法,此人虽无华美衣服,却是已着惭愧之衣,能坚固抵御六根怨贼;此人虽不是出生于上等族姓,却是已住于圣种姓中;此人虽无璎珞,却是以众善庄严其身;此人虽无珍宝,却是已聚集人天七种法财;此人不依桥梁即能超越险道;受持八戒者,能聚集如此功德。」诸龙听了龙王的劝化后,个个皆发愿:「我等愿闻八戒斋法,并顶戴受持,精勤而行。」
龙王告诉大众:「八戒是:一、不杀生;二、不偷盗;三、不邪婬;四、不妄语;五、不饮酒;六、不得过日中而食;七、不坐高广大床;八、不得歌舞作乐、香油涂身;是名八戒清净斋法。要远离愦閙,于寂静之处如法作意,专注奉持。」
龙群说:「我们只要仰仗龙王的威德,就能一切时中安隐而住。佛法的功德力,无处不在,为什么一定要找一个寂静的地方呢?」
龙王回答:「不耽着于欲望,就不会起心动念,若是习于攀缘外境,就容易产生欲望、妄念。譬如湿地,易成泥泞;若住于空闲寂静处,就不易起染着之心。」
于是,龙王便带领龙群来到寂静的地方,远离贪欲、瞠恚,常起慈忍心以修其身,受持八戒斋法多日,由于过午不食,身体虚弱又饥渴、疲惫。那时,有一群恶人来到龙住的地方,龙王听到人声,立即清醒。这些恶人看见眼前的情形,都惊骇的说:「这是什么宝物,从地下涌出?」龙王心里思惟:「若是这些人看见我本来的身形,他们必然惊恐而死,这样等于因我而亡,如此我岂不是犯了杀生戒?这些人来到这里,一定是贪图我的身体,想要断绝我的性命。」
这些恶人互相议论:「我们入山多年,从来不曾见过这样的龙身,色彩如此灿烂,耀人眼目。如果剥下龙皮,进献给国王,一定可以得到重赏,真是太好了!」于是,这群恶人便拿出锐利的刀,欲剥取龙皮。
此时,龙王以慈忍力,不生怨恨、不起烦恼,反而对这些人生起摄受想,灭除自己的三毒,并且告诉自己:「我不应悋惜身体,也不应起怨怼心,如生怨恨则不得解脱。这些人因为贪图重赏,而欲杀害我;我宁愿死,也不加害于这些人,使他们受苦。」
这些恶人奋力的在龙王身上切割后,扬长而去。此时龙王思惟:「若人并无任何罪过,却被他人支解身体,能忍受支解的痛楚,不报怨、不生瞠恨,此人才真正是菩萨。对于父母、兄弟、妻子加诸的伤害,能默默忍受,这并不难得,但是对于加害自己的陌生人,能不生怨恨心,也不思报复,而能默默忍受,这才是最难的。因此,现在为了利他的缘故,我应当默默忍受。从无始劫来,我糊里糊涂的丧失生命不知道有多少,从未特别的为他人施舍生命,愿我未来世,能给这些伤害我的人无量法财,能圆满他们的愿望。」
由于龙王被剥了皮,遍体出血,痛苦难忍,全身颤抖而无法控制,同时又有无量的小虫,闻到龙王身上流出的血腥味,全都聚集而来吃龙王的肉。龙王说:「这些吃我身体的小虫,愿我来世能给予它们法食。」龙族看到龙王受这种被生剥的巨大痛楚,都十分悲恼,龙王因此发大誓愿:「若我将来能成就佛道,我的身体就立刻恢复如常。」龙王发愿后,身体自然恢复,龙族见此情形,都欢喜无比。
菩萨虽然生于恶道中,仍然坚住慈忍力、坚持净戒!

The Dragon King of Loving-Kindness Subdues Hostility
In a distant past life countless eons ago, the Bodhisattva, due to anger, fell into rebirth as a dragon, possessing three kinds of poison: poisonous breath, poisonous gaze, and poisonous touch. Yet, because of past meritorious karma, his body shone like a collection of the seven treasures, radiating light without the need for sun or moon. Countless dragons constantly surrounded him, and he could transform into a handsome human form. They dwelled in a remote area of Mount Pituo, where forests flourished, flowers and fruits were abundant, and ponds were pure and peaceful. The dragons played there joyfully for immeasurable ages.
At that time, a king of Garuḍa birds descended from the sky, intending to seize dragons as food. Whenever he arrived, mountains collapsed and springs dried up. The dragons, seeing or hearing him, became terrified, their ornaments scattering to the ground. They cried, “A great enemy has come! His beak is sharp like vajra—once struck, we will shatter. What shall we do?”
The dragon king initially felt worry and distress, but due to past wholesome roots, he soon calmed his mind and reflected, “My mind is not truly afraid; it is only shaken by the Garuḍa’s power. In truth, only I can confront him and protect the dragons.” He told them, “Follow behind me and you will not be harmed. If I cannot protect you, what use is this great dragon body?”
He then approached the Garuḍa king fearlessly and said, “Although you often harm our kind, I harbor no intention of harming you. Though I possess three deadly poisons, I have never used them to harm beings. I could resist or flee, but I remain because many dragons rely on me. We do not wish to fight, for we hold no hatred toward you.”
The Garuḍa king asked, “Do you truly have no hatred?”
The dragon king replied, “Though in an animal body, I understand karma deeply. Even small evil brings heavy results; cause and effect follow like a shadow. We fall into lower realms due to past deeds. As taught by the Tathāgata: hatred cannot end hatred; only loving forbearance can extinguish it. Like adding dry wood to fire, anger only grows when met with anger.”
Hearing this sincere teaching, the Garuḍa’s hatred ceased and wholesome thoughts arose. He said, “Through your loving forbearance, my anger is extinguished, like fire quenched by water.”
The dragon king continued, “Long ago, we both upheld precepts before the Buddha, but due to impurity and lack of discipline, we became jealous and hateful, thus falling into lower realms. I confessed and repented, but you concealed your faults. Now you should uphold mindfulness and cultivate purity.”
The Garuḍa king vowed to grant safety to all dragons and departed.
The dragon king then taught the dragons that all beings cherish life and should cultivate great compassion. Loving-kindness is like medicine, a lamp, a raft, a companion, and a wish-fulfilling jewel. Without it, he had fallen into a dragon body; with it, beings attain liberation.
He further established the Eight Precepts, instructing them to uphold purity, restrain desires, and dwell in quiet places.
Later, while practicing, wicked men came, intending to kill the dragon for reward. The dragon king endured without hatred, choosing compassion over retaliation.
Even as his body was cut and devoured, he made vows to benefit all beings. Through the power of his vow, his body was restored.
Though born in a lower realm, the Bodhisattva steadfastly upheld loving-kindness, forbearance, and pure discipline.
