The Karmic Cause of a Brahmin Demanding a Debt from the Buddha

While the Buddha was residing at Jetavana in Śrāvastī, one day he led the bhikṣus into the city to collect alms. In an alley, they encountered a Brahmin who drew a line on the ground with his finger, blocking their way, and said, “Give me five hundred gold coins, and I will let you pass. If you do not pay, I will not allow you to go through.” The World-Honored One and the bhikṣus quietly stopped there, unable to proceed.

This matter quickly spread. King Bimbisāra, King Prasenajit, Viśākhā, Pūrṇa, and others heard of it and each brought various treasures to the Brahmin, asking him to allow passage, but he refused both the wealth and the request. At that time, the elder Sudatta also heard that the Buddha and his retinue were being obstructed and unable to leave. He immediately brought five hundred gold coins to the Brahmin, who then allowed the Buddha to pass.

Seeing the entire event, the bhikṣus found it very strange and asked the Buddha, “World-Honored One, what causes and conditions led to such a situation where even the Buddha could not pass?” The Buddha told them, “I will explain this to you; listen carefully. In the distant past, there was a king named Brahmadatta in the country of Bāraṇa. The crown prince was named Shansheng. One day, he went out with his companions for amusement. On the road, they encountered a man gambling with the son of a minister. The minister’s son lost and owed the man five hundred gold coins. The man pursued him for repayment, but he refused to pay. At that time, Shansheng said, ‘If he does not repay, I will repay on his behalf.’ However, relying on his power, the minister’s son still refused to pay. From that time on, throughout countless kalpas, I have been repeatedly pursued by that person for the debt.”

The Buddha told the assembly of bhikṣus, “The crown prince at that time was myself. The minister’s son is now the elder Sudatta. The one who gambled with him is the Brahmin who blocked the road today. Therefore, whenever you owe others money or goods, you must never deny or refuse to repay. Otherwise, even if one attains Buddhahood, one still cannot escape the difficulty of unresolved past debts.”

Hearing this explanation of causes and effects from the World-Honored One, the assembly rejoiced, accepted it with faith, and put it into practice.
