降诸魔怨成佛道

  佛在舍卫国只树给孤独园时,告诉诸天子、比丘们,世尊未成佛道前,坐在菩提树下,便起念:「欲界之中谁最防慢,应当降伏?欲界之中,天及人民,都已经降伏,除了魔王波旬,只要降伏波旬,防慢之天,就都完全降伏。」世尊起心动念,魔界皆悉震动。

  虚空之中,突然听到一偈子:
  舍真净王法,出家学甘露,
  设克广愿者,空此三恶趣。
  我今集兵众,瞻彼沙门颜,
  设不用我计,执脚掷海表。

  那时魔王波旬瞠恚心炽盛,便告诉狮子大将:「尽速集合四部之众,我要前往攻伐沙门!看看他有什么势力,可以与我共战?」

  世尊当时思惟:「与凡夫交战,尚且不应沉默,何况是欲界中的防慢者?自应与魔王一争胜负。」于是世尊身着仁慈的铠甲,手持三昧之弓、智慧之箭,静候魔军大众。

  不久,魔王及其大将兵众共十八亿,相貌各各不同,还有猿猴、狮子等,来到世尊座前。还有罗刹等众,有一身多头的;或有一头数十身的;或有两肩三颈,胸前有口;或有一只手、两只手、四只手;或有以双手捉头,口中衔着死蛇;或有头上燃火、口喷火光;或有用手把口分开,向前吞食;或偏袒肚子,手拿刀剑,担持戈矛;或拿着舂杵;或背负山、石、大树;或两脚在上、头在下;或骑乘象、狮子、虎、狼、毒虫;或走路;或空中飞。魔王率领的徒众,把树团团围住。

  魔王波旬站在世尊的左侧说:「沙门,赶快起来!」
  世尊默然不回应。
  魔王说了三次,之后又说:「沙门,你怕我吗?」
  世尊对魔王说:「我的心中没有畏惧。」
  波旬说:「沙门!你看见我的四部兵众了吗?就凭你一个人,剃除须发,披着三衣,没有兵器、刀杖,竟然敢说:『我无所畏惧!』」

  世尊对波旬说了一偈:「仁铠三昧弓,手执智慧箭,福业为兵众,今当坏汝军。」

  魔王波旬说:「你假使不听我的话,我就把你抓起来,毁灭你的身形。再说,沙门!你的相貌端正,年青力壮,又是尊贵的刹利种姓,你赶快起来,去享受五欲的快乐,我可以让你作转轮圣王。」

  世尊回答波旬:「你所说的事,都是无常变易,不能长久拥有,这是我要舍离的,并不是我要贪求的。」

  波旬又说:「沙门!你所求的是什么?有什么志愿?」
  世尊回道:「我所愿所求的,是无忧虑、恐惧的处所,安稳淡泊,住于涅槃中,能为流浪生死、沉于苦恼的此界众生,引导正路。」

  魔王又说:「你这沙门假如不赶快起座,我要抓你的脚,把你丢到海上。」
  世尊回答波旬说:「我观察天上、人间、魔界,无论天界、人、非人及你的四部兵众,没有谁能够动我一根汗毛。」

  魔王说:「沙门!你今天要和我交战吗?」
  世尊回答:「是想共战。」
  魔王又说:「你的怨敌是谁?」
  世尊回道:「防慢如增上慢、自慢、邪慢、慢中慢、增上慢都是我的怨敌。」

  魔王说:「那你要用什么义理来消灭这些慢呢?」
  世尊回答:「波旬!你要知道,有慈三昧、悲三昧、喜三昧、护三昧、空三昧、无愿三昧、无相三昧。由慈三昧,得悲三昧;缘悲三昧,得喜三昧;缘喜三昧,得护三昧;由空三昧,得无愿三昧;因无愿三昧,得无相三昧。我以这三种三昧之力,与你共战。行尽则苦尽,苦尽则烦恼尽,烦恼尽则至于涅槃。」

  魔王说:「沙门!可以用法来灭除法吗?」
  世尊回答:「可以法灭法。」
  魔王又问:「怎么样以法灭法呢?」
  世尊说:「以正见灭邪见,以邪见灭正见;正治灭邪治,邪治灭正治;正语灭邪语,邪语灭正语;正业灭邪业,邪业灭正业;正命灭邪命,邪命灭正命;正方便灭邪方便,邪方便灭正方便;正念灭邪念,邪念灭正念;正定灭邪定,邪定灭正定。」

  魔王说:「沙门!你今天用这些道理,还是难以战胜我。你现在赶快起来,不要让我把你丢到海里。」

  世尊对波旬说:「你过去因为修了布施,今日得作欲界的魔王;而我过去所累积的功德,则是无法计算的。你想把我丢到海里,很难做到!」

  波旬回答:「你说我修布施,得作魔王的福报;又称说你修习了无量的功德,谁能为你证明呢?」

  世尊当时即伸出右手,以手指按地面,对波旬说:「我所造就的功德,大地能为我证明!」当世尊说完这话时,地神即从地涌现,双手合十禀白说:「世尊!我可以为您证明!」地神一说完,魔王波旬面露忧愁,极为苦恼,随即隐退。

  世尊告诉比丘们!你们要知道,法尚且应舍除,何况是非法呢?我长夜为你们说的一觉喻经,你们尚且无法完全记住,更何况是真正了解其义理?这个法玄妙、深远,假使声闻、辟支佛修习这个法门,能获得大功德,到涅槃无为之处。所谓以慢灭除慢,当防慢灭尽之后,就再也没有各种恼乱的念头。就好比要修治野狸皮,就用拳头敲击,令无声响,使其柔软。现在所说的也是如此,假使慢心已尽,心就没有增减。所以,假使被贼所擒获,切莫生起恶念,要以慈心周遍十方,就好像那极为柔软的皮,不久便能获致无为之处。

  佛说这些法要时,在座中有三千位天子、六十多位比丘断尽一切烦恼,心开意解,得法眼净。诸比丘听佛开示后,法喜充满,依教奉行。

Subduing All Māra’s Hostility to Attain Buddhahood

  When the Buddha was in Jetavana at Śrāvastī, he told the devas and bhikṣus that before attaining Buddhahood, while seated beneath the Bodhi tree, he gave rise to this thought: “In the realm of desire, who is the most arrogant and should be subdued? The gods and humans have already been subdued, except for Māra Pāpīyas. Once Māra is subdued, all arrogance in the desire realm will be completely subdued.” When this thought arose, the entire realm of Māra trembled.

  From the sky, a verse was suddenly heard:
  Abandoning the pure Dharma of the king, one leaves home to learn the nectar;
  If one fulfills vast vows, the three evil paths will be emptied.
  Now I gather my armies to behold that ascetic’s face;
  If he does not follow my plan, I will seize his feet and cast him into the sea.

  At that time, Māra Pāpīyas, filled with rage, ordered his general, “Quickly assemble the fourfold army. I will go to attack the ascetic and see what power he has to contend with me.”

  The World-Honored One reflected, “Even when contending with ordinary beings, one should not remain silent—how much more so with the lord of arrogance in the desire realm. I should engage Māra and determine victory.” Thus, he donned the armor of compassion, took up the bow of samādhi and the arrow of wisdom, and calmly awaited Māra’s forces.

  Soon Māra arrived with eighteen hundred million troops of varied forms—monkeys, lions, and many grotesque beings. Some had multiple heads on one body; some one head with many bodies; some had strange limbs and terrifying appearances; some breathed fire; some carried weapons; some bore mountains and trees; some walked, some flew. They surrounded the Bodhi tree completely.

  Māra stood to the Buddha’s left and said, “Ascetic, get up!”
  The Buddha remained silent.
  After repeating this three times, Māra asked, “Are you afraid of me?”
  The Buddha replied, “There is no fear in my mind.”
  Māra said, “Look at my armies! You are alone, shaven-headed, wearing robes, with no weapons—yet you claim fearlessness!”

  The Buddha spoke a verse: “Clad in compassion as armor, holding the bow of samādhi and the arrow of wisdom, with merit as my army, I shall now destroy your forces.”

  Māra said, “If you do not obey me, I will seize and destroy you. You are noble and strong—rise and enjoy the pleasures of the five desires. I will make you a universal monarch.”

  The Buddha replied, “All you speak of is impermanent and subject to change. It is what I renounce, not what I seek.”

  Māra asked, “What then do you seek?”
  The Buddha answered, “I seek the place free from fear and sorrow—peaceful, tranquil, abiding in nirvāṇa—and to guide beings lost in saṃsāra toward the right path.”

  Māra threatened again, but the Buddha declared that no being in any realm could move even a hair of his body.

  Māra asked, “Will you fight me?”
  The Buddha said, “Yes.”
  Asked who his enemies were, he replied that all forms of pride were his true enemies.

  When Māra asked how to overcome them, the Buddha explained the samādhis of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, protection, emptiness, wishlessness, and signlessness, through which all afflictions are exhausted and nirvāṇa attained.

  Māra questioned whether one Dharma could extinguish another. The Buddha affirmed and explained the mutual overcoming of right and wrong views, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration.

  Māra still threatened, but the Buddha declared that while Māra’s kingship came from past giving, his own accumulated merit was immeasurable.

  When Māra demanded proof, the Buddha touched the earth, calling it to witness his merit. The earth deity arose and testified. Māra, distressed and defeated, withdrew.

  The Buddha then taught that even Dharma must ultimately be relinquished, much more so non-Dharma. When arrogance is extinguished, afflictions cease, and the mind becomes free and unconditioned, like softened hide. One should cultivate boundless loving-kindness even in adversity.

  As the Buddha taught, three thousand devas and over sixty bhikṣus eradicated all defilements and attained the pure Dharma eye. All rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
