精进的鱼王
佛过去在因地修菩萨行，其中一世为鱼王，不但身旁有左右大臣相辅佐，且个个具备高懿德行，信受佛法，不以众生生命为食，只以水中的植物果腹养命。它们慈心爱护、养育一切鱼子、鱼孙，就好像爱护、照顾自己的生命一般；在大海中，虽然天天随着潮浪的拍打，相互追逐，但时时刻刻以佛法，自我警戒。
有一天，鱼群在游戏中，不知不觉被渔网捕捉，发现身困渔网时，大鱼、小鱼个个担心害怕，着急地不知如何脱困。此时，鱼王以悲悯心，安慰鱼群：「不要害怕、不要担心！只要一心称念佛陀圣号，并且在心中发愿，愿一切众生得安稳、不受诸苦，依着这个慈心弘愿，一定能够得到庇佑，平安脱困。」话一说完，鱼王便将自己的头深深地插入泥中，举起尾巴，用尽全力撑开渔网，所有鱼群一涌而出，从渔网中脱困，毫发无伤地回到家中和家人团聚。
佛陀告诉比丘们：「这只鱼王，就是我的前身；身旁左右大臣，就是今日的舍利佛及目犍连。行菩萨道，应当意志坚决，广度无量众生，精进不懈。」

The Diligent Fish King
In the past, while cultivating the Bodhisattva path, the Buddha once took birth as a fish king. He was supported by ministers on both sides, all of whom possessed noble virtue, had faith in the Buddha-Dharma, and did not feed on the lives of other beings, but sustained themselves only on aquatic plants. They cared for and nurtured all fish eggs and offspring with compassion, just as they would protect and care for their own lives. Though they lived in the ocean, constantly struck by waves and chasing one another, they continually used the Dharma to discipline themselves.
One day, while the fish were playing, they were unknowingly caught in a fishing net. When they realized they were trapped, both large and small fish became fearful and anxious, not knowing how to escape. At that moment, the fish king, with a compassionate heart, reassured them, saying, “Do not be afraid or worried. Simply concentrate on reciting the sacred name of the Buddha and make a vow in your hearts that all beings may attain peace and be free from suffering. With this compassionate vow, you will surely receive protection and escape safely.” Having spoken, the fish king thrust his head deeply into the mud, raised his tail, and with all his strength forced the net open. All the fish surged out at once, escaped unharmed, and returned home to reunite with their families.
The Buddha told the bhikṣus, “That fish king was my former body. The ministers at his side are now Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. In practicing the Bodhisattva path, one should maintain firm resolve, liberate countless beings, and persevere diligently without ceasing.”
