The Expansion of Awareness into Boundless Sensation

In meditation, awareness is not confined to a fixed object or limited range. At first, it tends to rest on specific sensations or locations, but as stability and refinement develop, awareness gradually releases these constraints. It moves from the local to the whole, from bounded experience to openness without edges. The expansion into boundlessness is not the attainment of something vast or extraordinary, but the fading of fixation on center and boundary, inner and outer. Sensations continue to arise, change, and pass, yet awareness itself is no longer restricted to any particular point.

1. Understanding Expansion: From Local to Boundless

1.Awareness begins with specific objects
Attention is first stabilized on the breath, a bodily point, or a clear sensation.

2.Awareness gradually includes more layers
As concentration strengthens, awareness naturally encompasses more areas and more types of sensation.

3.Awareness releases a fixed center
Eventually, there is less sense of “I am here observing that,” and experience unfolds without a central point.

2. Why Can Awareness Expand Without Limit?

1.Awareness has no inherent boundary
Boundaries arise from conceptual division. As these divisions weaken, awareness is no longer confined.

2.Less grasping allows openness
Without clinging to certain sensations or rejecting others, awareness becomes naturally expansive.

3.Continuity dissolves fragmentation
When awareness remains continuous, separate sensations are integrated into one unfolding field.

4.Inner–outer distinction fades
As bodily and spatial sensations are known together, the division between inside and outside weakens.

3. The Process of Expansion in Practice

1.From point to field
Attention spreads from a single location to a broader bodily area.

2.From field to whole-body awareness
The entire body is known simultaneously as one field.

3.From body to open space
Bodily sensation blends with spatial awareness, softening the sense of boundary.

4.From expansion to boundlessness
There is no longer a sense of expansion toward somewhere; awareness appears without center or edge.

4. Characteristics of Expanding Awareness

1.Sensation becomes light and transparent
The body no longer feels solid or closed, but open and fluid.

2.Perception becomes continuous
Sensations are not isolated but part of an ongoing flow.

3.Spatial awareness strengthens
Awareness includes both body and surrounding space without separation.

4.Sense of self diminishes
The feeling of a central observer weakens; experience unfolds on its own.

5. How to Stabilize This Expansion

1.Do not intentionally enlarge the field
Expansion arises naturally; deliberate effort leads to imagination.

2.Maintain even awareness rather than fixation
Awareness spreads evenly without clinging to a point, yet remains clear.

3.Sustain continuity
When awareness is continuous, openness is maintained.

4.Do not emphasize special sensations
Any attempt to highlight particular experiences creates new centers.

6. Common Deviations and Corrections

1.Mistaking expansion as something to achieve
Forcing outward expansion leads to fabrication. Return to present experience.

2.Attachment to vastness
Clinging to boundless experience contracts awareness again. Treat all states equally.

3.Prioritizing range over clarity
A wide but unclear field is still distraction. Clarity and stability remain primary.

4.Confusing dullness with openness
Dullness is vague and heavy; openness is clear and unbound. Check for brightness and steadiness.

7. Transformations as Expansion Matures

1.Experience is no longer fragmented
Body, sensation, and space are known as one unfolding process.

2.Inner and outer lose opposition
They are seen as aspects of the same field.

3.Grasping weakens
Without a fixed center, attachment has less ground.

4.Awareness remains open and stable
It neither contracts nor disperses, remaining clear and unbounded.

Conclusion

The expansion of awareness into boundless sensation is not the pursuit of greater range, but the removal of limitation. When fixation on locality, center, and division falls away, awareness reveals its open nature. The essence of practice is not how vast experience becomes, but whether awareness is clear, steady, and free from grasping. Boundlessness is not an outward extension, but the unobstructed knowing of whatever arises.
