The Parable of a Tyrannical King Judged by the People

Once, the people of a certain country criticized their king’s governance, saying, “The king is extremely cruel and tyrannical and does not rule according to principles or law.” When these words reached the king, he became furious and enraged. Without carefully investigating who had spoken them, he believed the deceitful and flattering ministers around him. He then seized a loyal and wise minister, split open his back, and cut out one hundred liang of flesh from his body. Soon after, someone proved to the king that this virtuous minister had never spoken such words. The king felt remorse and sent one thousand liang of flesh to the minister to fill his back. However, the pain of being cut alive was unbearable, and the minister groaned and cried in agony every night. Hearing this, the king asked, “Why do you still cry in suffering? I took one hundred liang of flesh from you and have repaid you tenfold. Are you still not satisfied? Why such distress?” Someone beside him replied, “Great King! It is like a person whose head has been cut off—even if he is given a thousand heads, he cannot avoid death. Likewise, although the minister has received ten times the flesh, it cannot remove the suffering of having his flesh cut away.”

The ignorant are also like this. They do not fear the painful retribution of future lives, but only crave immediate worldly pleasures, harshly oppressing beings and subjecting them to suffering. Then they attempt to give wealth in hopes of offsetting their misdeeds and gaining merit. Just like this king, who cut flesh from his minister’s back and tried to compensate with more flesh, hoping to eliminate the suffering caused—this is impossible.
