The Parable of the Poor Man Burning His Coarse Garment
In the past, there was a poor man who worked for others and received a coarse cloth garment. Someone saw him wearing it and said, “You are of noble lineage—how can you wear such a rough and inferior garment? I will now teach you a way to obtain fine clothing. Follow my instructions, and I will not deceive you.” The poor man gladly obeyed. The person lit a fire and said, “Now take off your coarse garment and throw it into the fire. From the burning ashes, you will obtain noble clothing.” The poor man immediately did as told. After the garment was burned, only ashes remained—where could any noble clothing be found?
People in the world are just like this. Because in past lives they diligently practiced wholesome deeds, they have obtained a human body in this life. Having been born human, one should cherish this rare body, seize the proper conditions, elevate moral cultivation, and further advance in the path. However, some people are deluded by heterodox teachings and wrong views: “Believe my words—only by practicing various forms of ascetic hardship is one truly cultivating. By leaping from cliffs or casting oneself into fire, abandoning this body, one can be reborn in the Brahma Heaven and gain eternal happiness.” After hearing such false teachings, some abandon their lives, yet after death fall into hell and suffer immeasurable pain. They lose the human body and gain nothing. Just like the poor man who burned his coarse garment, they not only fail to obtain fine clothing, but even lose the only garment they had.
