The Compassionate Horse King
In the past, the Buddha was once born as a horse king named Jūya, who often stayed by the seashore ferrying and rescuing drifting people. At that time, on the other side of the sea, many lustful female demons remained. Whenever they saw merchants passing by, they would use illusion to transform into splendid cities filled with music, entertainment, and fine food, resembling a joyful homeland, to lure the merchants into staying. To further entice them, the female demons would transform into beautiful women, drinking and reveling with them. After about a year, when they grew weary, they would pierce the merchants’ throats with iron spikes, drink their blood, eat their flesh, and suck their marrow, causing them to die in agony.
Seeing from afar how the demons devoured people, the compassionate horse king wept and resolved to fly to that distant shore. After obtaining husked rice and eating, he ascended to the mountaintop and called out three times, “Who wishes to cross the sea and return home?” The merchants rejoiced and said, “We have long heard that the divine horse Jūya rescues people in times of danger. Today he has truly come!” They replied, “Please compassionately ferry us across the sea.” The horse king said, “When you decide to leave, the female demons will surely bring their children and chase after you, crying. Those who give rise to attachment will, after I depart, have their throats pierced, their blood drunk, and their flesh eaten. Only by maintaining right mindfulness can you preserve your lives. Those who decide to leave, mount my back, or hold onto my neck, mane, or tail. As long as you support one another, you will surely live to see your families again.” Those who trusted the horse king returned home and reunited with their families, while those who indulged in lust and superstition toward demons and sorcery all perished. Thus it is known that right faith removes false views and ensures lasting well-being.
The Buddha told the bhikṣus, “At that time, the horse king Jūya was myself. A bodhisattva should diligently practice the path, advance courageously, and move toward the resolve of Buddhahood.”
