佛度外道尸利毱多因缘(二)

  当世尊走出竹林,就好像拨云见日,树林神以天眼遥见尸利毱多家中设火坑、备毒饭欲害佛,啼泣流泪,向佛陀恭敬顶礼、瞻仰尊容,并说偈劝阻:
  「彼意怀残恶,无有利益心,愿佛不须往,回还向竹林。
  世尊甚难值,旷劫时一遇,佛虽不爱身,为度众生故,
  如斯胜妙身,应当勤拥护。未得济度者,宜应令得度,
  畏者施无畏,疲者得止息,令无归依者,得有归依处。
  略说而言之,有无量利益。唯愿佛世尊,莫往诣其家,
  为天阿修罗,而作归依处。」

  世尊明知故问树林神:「为什么不应该前往尸利毱多的家?」此时,有一位天神说偈言:
  「尸利毱多舍,作大深火坑,炽焰满其中,诈伪覆其上。」

  佛以偈答言:
  「贪欲愚痴火,极为难除灭,我以智水浇,消灭无遗余。
  况复世间火,何能为我害?地狱之猛火,炽然满世界,
  七日焚天地,世间皆融消,如此之猛火,莫能为我害。
  尸利毱多火,何能见伤毁?」

  又有一位天神说:「假如猛火不能伤害世尊,那么饭中下毒呢?如今尸利毱多的心被外道邪见染污,以此毒害恶逆之心,把毒药搅和在饭中欲伤害世尊。又心怀谄曲,诈现虔诚、柔软外相来恭请世尊,实际上他心存恶逆,希望世尊不要前往他家。」佛告诉天神:「慈悲心能解诸毒,即使是最难消除的贪爱之毒,我于久远劫前早已拔除其根本,更何况世间的毒药怎么可能伤害得了我呢?你不必忧愁!」

  这时,世尊从竹林走出来,前往城门口,树林神见到佛往前行进,伤心难过地说:「世尊将不会再返回竹林了,世尊今日前往解脱之处,犹如太阳出来必向西方落下,我现在瞻视不舍,恐怕以后再也见不到世尊了。假使世尊不为猛火伤害,也一定会被毒饭伤害,想必很难再看到世尊,有福德的人才能见到,世尊具大智慧能摧破外道论说,在大众中作师子吼,有福报的人才能听闻,并礼拜世尊。」

  世尊举步犹如行走在七宝楼阁,诸根寂静安定,诸大比丘等悉皆随侍在旁,就好像空中的明月被众星围绕,前往尸利毱多家。此时,尸利毱多家的住宅神放声大哭说:「世尊今日来到此地,可是稀有难得的事,可是尸利毱多却以火坑、毒饭要害佛。」住宅神顶礼佛并说偈道:
  「我未睹佛时,愿大悲至家,见佛到家已,心中不喜乐。
  所以不喜者,以有非法故。相好庄严身,瞻仰无厌足,
  如此大人者,今当作灰聚。我忆是事故,身体欲渗没。
  谁见如此事,而当不苦恼?假使极恶猛,愚痴残害人,
  设见如来身,不忍生恶念,况复欲加害?月入罗睺口,
  世人皆忿恼,善哉还归去。火坑深七仞,满中盛炽火,
  愿莫入此处,自护及护我,并护彼主人,及余一切众。」

  世尊安慰住宅神说:「利刀、毒药、大水、猛火是无法伤害慈悲心的。」随即说偈:
  「我护诸众生,犹如一子想,假使欲害我,我亦生慈心。
  烦恼火炽盛,拥护令免恶,以是因缘故,谁火能烧我?」

  佛对住宅神说:「你可以舍离恐惧担忧,我今日要作师子吼降伏外道论说,犹如罗睺阿修罗王障蔽日月的光华,我不会被尸利毱多所加害,如果连外道这种小小的伎俩都无法排除,我又怎能降伏诸魔呢?」世尊安慰住宅神后,就进入尸利毱多家中。

  那些无知的外道徒众看见世尊进入屋内,都心生欢喜,还告诉彼此:「沙门瞿昙现在已走进大门,稍后就会走到中门。」世尊身放威光遍照屋内,通行无碍,穿过中门逐渐走近火坑。这时,尸利毱多的妻子在幽室内,听到外道徒众议论著世尊将走近火坑,心急如焚地想:「世尊渐渐走近火坑,假如脚碰到火坑上的草,大火势必猛烈燃烧,这该如何是好!」于是伤心地说:
  「今当烟中没,謦咳目雨泪,火然烧衣时,应当抖擞却。
  眼看索救护,宛转而反侧,燋然既以讫,威光复消融。
  身相都焚灭,头发燋堕落,额广白毫相,今以尽消灭,
  如鹄在花上,为火所烧灭。面如净满月,众生睹其目,
  犹如美甘露,既堕焰火中,惊惧视四方,猛火无悲愍,
  必烧令燋然。成链真金色,见者靡不悦,大人相炳着,
  美妙极殊特,如是之形容,今为火燋缩。略说而言之,
  如似金织纳,卷叠在一处,以渐见消灭,如月欲尽时。
  佛身甚微妙,见者身心悦,如来极奇特,世界无伦匹。」

  此时,世尊更靠近火坑,外道徒众在楼阁上看见这情况,无限欢喜,就好像坟墓旁树上的一群乌鸦望着死尸的肉,即将噉食的喜悦。富兰那更是心生欢喜,说偈道:
  「汝善作幻术,回转诸世间,今日没火坑,更能为幻不?」

  又有一位外道尼干陀说:
  「一足已蹑上,云何不陷堕?为我目不了?为是梦幻耶?」

  当世尊举起相轮足踏在火坑上时,火坑立即变为清凉池,池中长满清净的莲花,以及茂盛的莲叶,颜色鲜明润泽遍满池中,其中有些莲花已经盛开,有些还含苞待放。尸利毱多目睹此事,就告诉富兰那:「你先前说想要与佛较量谁是真正的一切智者,现在你不必再说这样的话了。」并说偈言:
  「善哉可信解,当除瞠恚心,舍于嫌恨意。汝可观瞿昙,
  未曾有之威,猛焰变为水,土悉化成鱼,坑中诸火炭,
  咸变为黑蜂,复于池水中,化作众莲华,具足有千叶,
  遍布于池中,其须甚炽盛,如秋开敷花,百叶甚柔软,
  庄严满此池,诸鹤在池中,皆出和雅音,迦兰陀鸟等,
  亦在中游戏,举翅水相洒,诸蜂围绕佛,出于妙音声,
  鸳鸯相随逐,复自在娱乐。」

  不死心的富兰那对尸利毱多说:「你不要被瞿昙的幻术迷惑欺骗了。」然而幡然醒悟的尸利毱多已对世尊生起深厚的敬信心,反问富兰那:「这是幻术吗?」富兰那回答:「是的,这是幻化变现出来的。」他又问:「你是一切智者吗?」富兰那回答:「我是一切智人。」尸利毱多说:「如果你真是一切智人,请听我说。」随即说偈:
  「汝若一切智,亦应知是幻,汝今何不作,如此幻化事?
  汝若不知幻,非是一切智。」

  当下,富兰那被反驳得辞穷理屈,无话可说,一旁的尼干陀徒众劝尸利毱多说:「不要这么说!富兰那是真实的一切智人,他能示现通达一切真理。」尸利毱多说:「你们说富兰那是一切智人吗?富兰那名字的意思为满,是指造恶多端、恶贯满盈于地狱,所以叫富兰那。你们在恶业满于恶道的富兰那旁,能生出一切智吗?」尸利毱多又问他们:「释迦族中已得解脱自在证无上正等正觉的世尊,难道不是具足一切种智吗?」随即说偈:
  「叱汝等方去,极为无心人,汝若有心者,假使如金刚,
  见斯希有事,尚应生信敬。现见于如来,为未曾有事,
  不生信心者,是为极愚痴。」

The Karmic Conditions of the Conversion of the Heretic Śrīgupta (II)

  As the World-Honored One emerged from the bamboo grove, it was like the sun breaking through clouds. A tree deity, with divine sight, saw that Śrīgupta had prepared a pit of fire and poisoned food to harm the Buddha. Weeping, the deity bowed and urged the Buddha in verse:
  “With cruel intent and no benefit in mind,
  May the Buddha not go, but return to the grove.
  Rare indeed is the World-Honored One,
  Met but once in countless aeons.
  Though not attached to his body, for the sake of beings,
  Such a wondrous form should be protected.
  Those not yet saved should be delivered,
  The fearful granted fearlessness,
  The weary given rest,
  The refuge-less given refuge.
  In brief, immeasurable benefit arises.
  May the Buddha not go to that house,
  But remain a refuge for devas and asuras.”

  The Buddha asked why he should not go. A deva replied in verse:
  “In Śrīgupta’s house, a deep pit of fire is made,
  Filled with blazing flames and covered deceptively.”

  The Buddha answered:
  “The fires of greed, hatred, and delusion are hardest to extinguish;
  With the water of wisdom I have quenched them entirely.
  How then could worldly fire harm me?
  Even the fierce fires of hell,
  Burning heaven and earth for seven days,
  Cannot harm me—
  How could Śrīgupta’s fire do so?”

  Another deva spoke of poison in the food. The Buddha replied that compassion dissolves all poisons, and no worldly toxin could harm him.

  The Buddha proceeded toward the city. The tree deity lamented, fearing never to see him again.

  The Buddha walked serenely, surrounded by monks like the moon among stars, and arrived at Śrīgupta’s house. The household deity wept and spoke in verse, lamenting the impending harm.

  The Buddha comforted the deity, declaring that weapons, poison, water, and fire cannot harm one who abides in compassion, and entered the house.

  The heretics rejoiced, expecting harm to befall the Buddha. Śrīgupta’s wife, hearing this, was filled with anguish and spoke in verse, fearing the Buddha would be burned.

  As the Buddha approached the fire pit, the heretics rejoiced like crows anticipating flesh. Pūraṇa mocked him, and others doubted.

  When the Buddha stepped upon the fire, it transformed into a cool pond filled with blooming lotuses. Śrīgupta, witnessing this, admonished Pūraṇa and praised the Buddha in verse.

  Pūraṇa insisted it was illusion. Śrīgupta questioned him and exposed his inconsistency in verse, leaving him speechless.

  The heretics defended Pūraṇa, but Śrīgupta rebuked them and declared the Buddha to be the true omniscient one, concluding in verse that those who do not give rise to faith upon seeing such a rare event are deeply deluded. (To be continued)
