佛度外道尸利毱多因缘(三)
尼干陀徒众听了尸利毱多义正词严的一番话,心虚地立即各自离开,犹如善呪师诵呪令鬼神四方散去,又如太阳出来而黑暗自动消除,尸利毱多见诸尼干陀奔走的样子也是如此,便感叹地说:
「恐怖目视速,慞惶欲竞驰,
以佛威神力,惊怕皆散走。
尼揵今退散,亦如魔军坏,
尘垢坌身体,犹着重铠器。
时诸尼揵等,奔突极速疾,
譬如彼犛牛,在林虻蜇螫。
宛转泥涂身,狂走不自停,
如黑云垂布,风吹自然散。」
诸尼干陀既已逃散,这时,尸利毱多心怀惭愧忏悔,就思惟:「谁能带我去见世尊?」又想:「我的妻子是树提伽的姊姊,先前曾见过世尊,我应请她与我一同去见世尊。」就来到关闭妻子的幽室前,敲门呼唤妻子,说道:
「善哉汝真是,无上妙法器,
由汝有智慧,亲近奉世尊,
缘我邪见故,事诸尼揵等。
汝今速来出,共汝供养佛。」
他的妻子听闻偈语,心想:「尸利毱多一定是为了要害世尊,所以说这些话来欺骗我。」于是悲泣的回答着:
「汝知我忧恼,故来见戏弄,
我今当云何,而往见如来?
尼揵等集时,犹如诸蝗虫,
邪见之炽火,灭于释种灯。」
尸利毱多就告诉妻子:「你难道不知道世尊的神力吗!不然你为何这么说?」接着便说:
「世间一切火,何能焚烧佛?
谁能烧金刚?谁能举大地?
汝观十力尊,摧破诸外道,
火坑四畔边,莲华皆开敷,
如鹄处花间,花瓣遮绕佛。」
他的妻子一听闻偈语,抬头遥见世尊踏在莲花上,欢喜地说道:「世尊具足大威力,所以猛火无法烧害。」尸利毱多羞愧垂泪的说:
「世尊金刚体,无有能烧者,
由近富兰那,我今自被烧。
如似少湿薪,逼近干薪积,
以火焚烧时,两俱同炽然。」
于是尸利毱多的妻子快速走出幽室,到世尊面前顶礼,长跪合掌瞻仰说道:
「得睹威颜者,世间皆信敬,
由我今有福,还得闻音声,
面如净满月,我今得睹见,
我今有福故,还得睹世尊。
相好庄严身,设当见灭坏,
恶名遍充满,烧灭我等身。」
说完连忙敷设供具,恭请世尊及众比丘就座,并对尸利毱多说:「你可以来顶礼世尊了。」这时,他泪流盈眶,说偈:
「我今造火坑,规害世尊命,
今当以何面,可复得相见?」
妻子告诉他:「你应舍除疑惑,世尊大慈大悲,不会嫌恨。」并说偈:
「譬如空中手,无有触碍处,
诸佛法亦尔,佛于一切法,
无染亦无着,离世之八法,
如莲华处水。昔时提婆达,
瞠恚心所盲,为欲害佛故,
机关转大石,当上空中下,
不能伤害佛。如彼罗睺罗,
即是如来子,佛于此二人,
等心无憎爱,视彼怨与亲,
左右眼无异。于诸众生所,
慈悲过一子,终不于汝所,
而有憎恶心。是故不宜惧。」
尸利毱多心怀惭愧,佝偻着身体,随着妻子到世尊面前,感到口干舌燥、羞耻愧疚,行步迟缓,犹如将跌倒在地,全身颤抖,内心惊恐,五体投地,痛哭哀嚎,说偈:
「宁抱持炽火,并及瞠毒蛇,
终不近恶友。我今为恶友,
毒蛇之所螫,依归善良医,
望得除毒害。三界之真济,
愿重见哀愍,我作重过恶,
唯愿垂悲顾,今听我忏悔。」
世尊和颜悦色告诉他:「你不用忧愁惶怖。」说偈:
「起起我无瞠,久舍怨亲心,
右以栴檀涂,左以利刀割,
于此二人中,其心等无异。」
世尊又说:「今天所遇到的已不是稀有之事,但是我已断尽烦恼,心无爱憎分别。往昔无数劫,我为六牙白象时,虽被毒螫所伤,仍保护欲伤害我的猎人;又我作龟身时,被人分割支节时,我未生起瞠心;又我曾为熊身,怜悯受困者为他指路,即使后来他向猎人们说出我藏身之处,我也不起瞠心;当我为仙人时,手足耳鼻悉被割毁,尚且不生起丝毫的瞠怒。又往昔我为一切施王,被婆罗门斩头时,我也没有瞠恚怨恨。何况今日我已断除一切烦恼,又怎会对你有嫌恨之心?譬如虚空不会受微尘垢染,又如莲华不着于水,我的心也是如此,早已远离世间利、衰、毁、誉、称、讥、苦、乐八法。」
这时,尸利毱多恭敬合掌禀白:「世尊!您若垂怜哀愍我,请稍待片刻,让我再重新准备斋饭供养。」世尊反问他:「你不是派遣使者,告诉我已到应供的时间了?」他回答:「是的,我是派了人前去请世尊,但是我作了不饶益的事。」佛说道:「我已断除不利之事,你究竟作了什么不饶益的事?」尸利毱多说:
「我今愚所造,屠猎所不造,
过是恶所作,以毒置食中,
不能有所伤,便为自害己。」
世尊对他说:「现在正是你供养斋饭之时。」他惭愧地回答:「世尊!我所准备的斋饭都搀杂毒药。」世尊说:
「婆须吉龙王,瞠恚极盛时,
如此之猛毒,不能伤害我。
我今修慈心,如何唱施药?
我以大慈果,今当用示汝。」
尸利毱多捧着毒饭到世尊面前,涕泪悲泣地说:
「我今持毒饭,功德之伏藏,
我心极为恶,毒饭以标相。
佛以灭三毒,神足除饭毒,
食之能令我,使得不动心。」
世尊告诉诸比丘:「你们唱诵僧跋后即可食用。」随即说偈:
「在于上座前,而唱僧跋竟,
众毒自消除,汝今尽可食。」
唱诵僧跋后,世尊与比丘们食用斋饭,尸利毱多来回观察,担心地想:「大众是否能不被毒饭所害?」当他见到众比丘都安稳未被毒害,更是倍增敬信,心生欢喜。
这时,世尊想:「尸利毱多已对佛法生起敬信之心,得度的因缘已成熟,我应为他灭除烦恼之火,去除邪见之毒。」世尊即应机为他宣说四圣谛法,尸利毱多听闻法要,心开意解,断除见惑,断除身见毒害、灭尽诸烦恼火,当下,尸利毱多得以见道,欢喜说偈:
「我度于愚痴,及以邪见海,
不畏于恶道。我欲入黑闇,
遇佛得大明,欲入于大火,
反获凉冷池。呜呼佛大人,
呜呼法清净,不能具广说,
我今但略说。我本欲与毒,
而获甘露食,鬪诤应失财,
反得于大利。是故亲近佛,
众生慧眼开,而得睹正道。」(全文完)

The Karmic Conditions of the Conversion of the Heretic Śrīgupta (III)
Upon hearing Śrīgupta’s firm and righteous words, the followers of the Nirgrantha sect lost their confidence and dispersed in all directions, like spirits driven away by a skilled incantation master, or like darkness vanishing when the sun rises. Seeing them flee, Śrīgupta sighed and said:
“With fearful glances, they scatter in haste,
In panic striving to flee afar.
By the Buddha’s mighty spiritual power,
All in terror disperse and run.
Now the Nirgranthas retreat and scatter,
Like Māra’s army utterly broken.
Dust and filth cover their bodies,
As though burdened with heavy armor.
They rush and dash with frantic speed,
Like cattle stung by flies in the forest.
Rolling in mud, their bodies smeared,
They run wildly without stopping,
Like dark clouds hanging low,
Dispersed naturally by the wind.”
After they had fled, Śrīgupta felt deep shame and repentance, and thought, “Who can bring me to see the World-Honored One?” He then thought, “My wife is the elder sister of Śrutika; she has seen the Buddha before. I should ask her to go with me.” He went to the chamber where his wife was confined, knocked, and called to her, saying:
“Excellent indeed, you are truly
A vessel of the supreme Dharma.
Through your wisdom, you drew near
And served the World-Honored One.
Because of my wrong views,
I followed the Nirgranthas.
Come forth quickly now,
Together let us make offerings to the Buddha.”
Hearing this verse, his wife thought, “He must intend to harm the Buddha and is deceiving me.” She wept and replied:
“You know my sorrow,
Yet come to mock me.
How could I now
Go to see the Tathāgata?
When the Nirgranthas gather,
They swarm like locusts;
The blazing fire of wrong views
Extinguishes the Śākya lamp.”
Śrīgupta said, “Do you not know the Buddha’s power?” Then he recited:
“What fire in the world
Could ever burn the Buddha?
Who can burn vajra?
Who can lift the great earth?
Behold the Ten-Powered One,
Who crushes all heretics.
Around the pit of fire,
Lotuses bloom in full array,
Like a swan among flowers,
Encircled by blossoms around the Buddha.”
Hearing this, his wife looked up and saw the Buddha standing upon lotuses. She rejoiced and said, “The World-Honored One possesses great power; fierce fire cannot harm him.” Śrīgupta wept in shame and said:
“The Buddha’s body is vajra,
None can burn it.
Yet by associating with Pūraṇa,
I have burned myself.
Like damp wood near dry fuel,
When fire is set,
Both burn fiercely together.”
His wife hurried out, bowed before the Buddha, and said:
“Those who behold your majestic form
Are revered by all the world.
Through my present fortune,
I again hear your voice.
Your face like the full pure moon,
I now behold it.
Through my blessings,
I again see the World-Honored One.
Should such a body adorned with marks perish,
Evil repute would fill the world
And consume us all.”
She then prepared offerings and invited the Buddha and the monks to be seated, telling Śrīgupta to bow. He wept and said:
“I have made a pit of fire
Intending to harm the Buddha.
With what face can I now
Appear before him again?”
His wife said, “Abandon doubt; the Buddha is greatly compassionate and bears no hatred,” and recited:
“Like a hand in empty space,
There is no obstruction.
So too are the Buddha’s teachings—
Unstained and unattached.
Detached from the eight worldly winds,
Like a lotus in water.
Devadatta once, blinded by anger,
Sought to harm the Buddha,
Hurling a great rock from above,
Yet could not injure him.
Like Rāhula, the Buddha’s own son,
Toward both, the Buddha is equal,
Without hatred or attachment,
Seeing foe and kin alike,
Like left and right eyes the same.
Toward all beings,
His compassion exceeds that for a single child.
Thus he holds no hatred toward you—
Therefore, do not fear.”
Śrīgupta, filled with shame, bent low and followed his wife to the Buddha. Trembling, parched, and overcome with remorse, he prostrated and cried:
“Better to hold blazing fire
Or venomous serpents
Than to approach evil friends.
Now stung by such friends,
Like poison from a snake,
I seek a good physician
To remove the toxin.
O true savior of the three realms,
Grant me compassion again.
I have committed grave wrongs—
I beg your mercy;
Hear now my repentance.”
The Buddha, gentle and serene, said, “Do not fear,” and recited:
“Arise, arise—I harbor no anger,
Long have I abandoned enmity and attachment.
One anointed with sandalwood,
Another cutting with a blade—
Toward both, my mind is equal.”
The Buddha further said that in countless past lives he endured harm without anger, protecting even those who sought to harm him, and thus now, having eliminated all afflictions, he holds no resentment, like space unstained or a lotus untouched by water.
Śrīgupta respectfully requested to prepare offerings again. The Buddha questioned him, and he confessed placing poison in the food, saying:
“What I have done in folly
Even hunters would not do—
Placing poison in the food,
Unable to harm others,
It harms only myself.”
The Buddha replied that it was time for offering, and said:
“Even the serpent king Vāsuki,
In utmost fury,
Cannot harm me with poison.
Practicing great compassion,
How could I be harmed?
By the fruit of great compassion,
I now demonstrate this to you.”
Śrīgupta brought the poisoned food and wept, saying:
“I bring poisoned food,
Yet it becomes a treasury of merit.
My mind was evil—
This poison marks it.
But the Buddha destroys the three poisons,
And removes the poison of the food;
By partaking of it,
My mind may become unmoving.”
The Buddha instructed the monks to chant, and after chanting, said:
“Having chanted before the elders,
All poisons are dispelled—
Now you may all partake.”
After eating, Śrīgupta observed anxiously, then rejoiced seeing no harm.
The Buddha then taught the Four Noble Truths. Śrīgupta, hearing the Dharma, eradicated wrong views and attained the path, joyfully declaring:
“I have crossed the sea of ignorance
And of wrong views,
No longer fearing evil destinies.
Entering darkness, I met the Buddha
And gained great light.
Entering fire,
I found a cool pond instead.
Alas, the greatness of the Buddha!
Alas, the purity of the Dharma!
I cannot fully express it—
I speak only briefly.
I intended poison,
Yet obtained nectar.
Expecting loss in conflict,
I gained great benefit.
Thus, drawing near the Buddha,
The eye of wisdom opens,
And the true path is seen.”
