孙陀利相好庄严缘
过去,佛陀在王舍城迦兰陀竹林教化众生时,波斯匿王的夫人生下一名容貌端严、为世少有的男孩,他的双目如拘那罗鸟般地清澈明亮,因此国王为他取名为“拘那罗”。
波斯匿王十分喜爱这个儿子,不仅为他准备镶有珍贵璎珞的上妙衣服,还派人抱着他遍行城内各个聚落;每到一处,国王即高兴地询问:“世上还有人像我的孩子这般庄严的吗?”
一次,有位商人站出来说:“国王!小民有事禀报,请国王保证不会生气,小的才敢直说。”国王答应了商人的请求后,商人说道:“在我的家乡,有一个男孩名叫孙陀利,他的容貌殊胜妙好,就像天人一般,胜过王子百千万倍。更不可思议的是,当他出生时,屋内自然涌出带有香气的泉水,各式珍宝充满其中。”
波斯匿王听了商人的话后,便派人去布达自己将前往会见孙陀利的旨意。聚落的村长知道后,便和大家商议:“国王要来看孙陀利,不如我们先将孙陀利送过去,以表示敬意。”决定后,村民们将孙陀利打扮一番,即送去宫里谒见国王。
波斯匿王见了孙陀利,非常惊讶世间竟有如此端正庄严的人,于是带着他前往精舍拜见佛陀,希望能向佛陀请法,了解此人为何能感得如此殊胜的果报?
孙陀利见到佛陀相好庄严,身上并散发如千百日般的光明,心生恭敬欢喜,即至诚地顶礼佛陀。随后,佛陀为他开示苦、集、灭、道四谛法门,孙陀利当下心开意解,证得须陀洹果。初尝法益的孙陀利祈请能在佛陀座下出家修行,佛陀慈悲应允:“善来比丘,须发自落,法服着身。”孙陀利即现清净僧相;日后不断地精进修行,不久就证得阿罗汉果。
波斯匿王请示佛陀:“世尊,请问什么因缘让孙陀利比丘一出生,就有泉水及珍宝随身,又能值遇世尊出家证果?”佛陀开示大众:“迦叶佛住世时,波罗奈国有一万八千位比丘在山林中精进用功,坐禅行道。一天,有位长者偶然间来到山林里,看到他们如此精进,心中甚是欢喜,于是回家准备混合诸种香而成的清净水来供养这群僧众沐浴,并以种种上好肴膳斋僧。用完斋,长者还准备了各式珍宝置于香水盆中供养众僧,并且发愿生生世世护持三宝。因为这样的功德,所以长者从此不堕恶道,常生天上人间,并有泉水、珍宝伴随出生。这位长者就是现在的孙陀利比丘,因为供养众僧沐浴、饮食,所以感得端正殊胜的果报。”
波斯匿王听完佛陀的开示后,心开意解,欢喜奉行佛陀教法。

The Karmic Cause of Sundari’s Majestic and Adorned Appearance
In the past, when the Buddha was teaching and transforming beings at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha, Queen of King Prasenajit gave birth to a boy of exceptionally dignified and rare appearance. His eyes were as clear and bright as those of a kunāla bird, and thus the king named him “Kunāla.”
King Prasenajit dearly loved this son. He prepared exquisite garments adorned with precious ornaments for him and had him carried throughout the city and its villages. At each place, the king would joyfully ask, “Is there anyone in the world as dignified and magnificent as my child?”
On one occasion, a merchant stepped forward and said, “Your Majesty, I have something to report, but I ask that you promise not to be angry before I speak.” After the king agreed, the merchant said, “In my hometown, there is a boy named Sundari. His appearance is supremely wonderful, like that of a celestial being, surpassing the prince by hundreds of thousands of times. Even more astonishing, when he was born, fragrant spring water naturally flowed within the house, and various treasures filled it.”
Upon hearing this, the king sent word that he would personally visit Sundari. When the village head learned of this, he discussed with the villagers, “Since the king is coming to see Sundari, it would be better for us to send him to the palace first as a sign of respect.” They then dressed Sundari beautifully and sent him to the palace to meet the king.
When King Prasenajit saw Sundari, he was astonished that such a dignified and majestic person could exist in the world. He then took him to the monastery to meet the Buddha, wishing to ask why such an extraordinary result had arisen.
Upon seeing the Buddha’s majestic marks and the radiance emanating from him like hundreds of thousands of suns, Sundari felt deep reverence and joy, and sincerely bowed. The Buddha then expounded to him the Four Noble Truths—suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Sundari immediately gained understanding and attained the fruit of Stream-entry. Having tasted the benefit of the Dharma, he requested to go forth under the Buddha. The Buddha compassionately permitted him, saying, “Come, bhikṣu.” His hair fell away, and he donned the Dharma robe, manifesting the pure monastic form. Through diligent practice, he soon attained arhatship.
King Prasenajit asked the Buddha, “World-Honored One, by what causes and conditions was Bhikṣu Sundari born with springs and treasures, and able to encounter the Buddha and attain liberation?” The Buddha explained, “In the time of Buddha Kāśyapa, in Vārāṇasī, there were eighteen thousand bhikṣus practicing diligently in the forest. One day, a wealthy elder came upon them, rejoiced at their diligence, and returned home to prepare fragrant water to offer them for bathing, along with fine food. After the meal, he placed various treasures in the fragrant water basins as offerings and made a vow to support the Three Jewels in every lifetime. Due to this merit, he did not fall into evil paths, was often reborn among gods and humans, and was accompanied by springs and treasures at birth. That elder is now Bhikṣu Sundari. Because he made offerings of bathing and food to the Saṅgha, he obtained such a dignified and excellent result.”
After hearing the Buddha’s teaching, King Prasenajit’s mind opened with understanding, and he joyfully practiced according to the Dharma.
