无言菩萨
舍卫城中有位名叫师子的将军，有一天他得知妻子怀孕了，心里非常高兴，静静等待自己儿子的降临。
孩子出生那天，从空中传来一阵洪亮的声音：
「师子将军，您的孩子不是普通人，应该守口如瓶，谨慎少说话，请您不要用世俗的眼光来衡量您的孩子。」
将军听了，知道自己的儿子不是一般人，于是更加用心地呵护他，并把他取名叫「无言」。
渐渐的无言长到八岁了，虽然不会说话，但是他容貌堂堂，心地慈善，城中没有人不喜欢他的，师子将军夫妇满心欢喜。
有一次，将军父妇和无言在舍卫城听佛陀讲法，无言听得津津有味，但就是不发一语。
舍利弗向佛陀问道：「世尊，师子将军的儿子慧根充足，可是就是不会说话，这是为什么呢？」
佛陀说：「不要轻视这孩子！这孩子出生之前已经在无量佛前许了大愿，积累种种善根，早已达到不退转菩提道。现在他善根受我教诲，已经获得四禅了。看他这般年纪，其实已经能调伏无量众生。」
佛陀的这番话解开了师子将军夫妇和众人心中的疑惑。
这时，无言显示神通之力，从自己右手掌中变出一朵灿烂美丽的莲花，不停在手心上像车轮一般的旋转。众人看了都感到十分惊讶，高兴地说：
「原来师子将军家的小孩是大菩萨呀！」
这时无言低头合掌念道：「南无阿弥陀佛。」
与会所有菩萨听到了，也一起念着：「南无阿弥陀佛。」
一时间，与恒河沙粒同数量的十万世界震动六次。
菩萨们用妙香花和种种伎乐供养佛陀，之后无言和所有菩萨跳跃至虚空世界中，一起唱念偈颂并且赞颂佛陀的无边功德。

The Bodhisattva Silent Speech
Thus have I heard:
At one time, in the city of Śrāvastī, there was a general named Siṃha (Lion). One day his wife conceived, and he rejoiced greatly, awaiting the birth of his child.
On the day the child was born, a great voice resounded from the sky, saying:
“General Siṃha, your child is no ordinary being. Guard your tongue as a sealed vessel, and be ever cautious in speech. Judge not this child with worldly measure.”
The general, hearing this, understood that his son was not common. With care he raised him and gave him the name Silent Speech (Wuyan).
When the child reached the age of eight, though he had not spoken a single word, his form was handsome and dignified, and his heart was gentle and kind. All the people of the city loved him, and the general and his wife were filled with joy.
Once, the general, his wife, and Silent Speech went to hear the Blessed One preach the Dharma in Śrāvastī. The child listened with rapt attention, yet uttered not a word.
Then Śāriputra asked the Buddha:
“World-honored One, this son of General Siṃha is endowed with wisdom-roots, yet he does not speak. What is the cause?”
The Buddha said:
“Do not look lightly upon this child! Before his birth, he made vast vows before immeasurable Buddhas and planted countless wholesome roots. He has already reached the stage of non-retrogression on the Bodhi Path. Now, by receiving my instruction, he has attained the Fourth Dhyāna. Though appearing as a child, he is already able to subdue limitless beings.”
Hearing these words, the general, his wife, and the multitude were released from doubt.
At that moment, Silent Speech displayed supernatural power: from the palm of his right hand appeared a radiant lotus flower, turning like a wheel within his hand. All who beheld it marveled and cried out in joy:
“Indeed, the son of General Siṃha is a great Bodhisattva!”
Then Silent Speech lowered his head, placed his palms together, and uttered:
“Namo Amitābha Buddha.”
All the Bodhisattvas present also intoned together:
“Namo Amitābha Buddha.”
In that instant, ten hundred thousand worlds, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, quaked six times.
The Bodhisattvas offered wondrous flowers, fragrances, and celestial music in homage to the Buddha. Then Silent Speech and the assembly of Bodhisattvas rose into the sky, chanting verses in praise of the immeasurable virtues of the Blessed One.
