Sitting Meditation

Adjusting Body–Mind Energy Before Entering Meditative Absorption

Before entering meditation, the energetic condition of body and mind directly affects the stability and clarity of absorption. If the body is tense, breathing disturbed, or the mind agitated, sitting alone will not bring true settling. Practice begins before taking the seat. Through conscious harmonization of body, breath, and mind, scattered energy gathers naturally, laying a stable and gentle foundation for meditation.

1. Establishing a Proper View of Preparation

1.Meditation begins with adjustment
Absorption is not an instant shift but a gradual process of gathering. Pre-meditative adjustment allows stability to arise naturally rather than through force.

2.Energetic imbalance obstructs calm
Fatigue, overstimulation, tension, or suppression disrupt energy flow, leading to dullness or restlessness if ignored.

3.Preparation itself is practice
Adjusting body and mind trains awareness, patience, and honest observation.

2. Regulating Bodily Energy: Creating Stability

1.Relaxing without collapsing
Soften shoulders, back, abdomen, and face while maintaining uprightness, allowing energy to settle without sinking.

2.Stabilizing the bodily axis
Align head, neck, and spine so energy flows vertically with minimal dissipation.

3.Awakening without over-stimulation
Gentle stretching or walking can refresh alertness, avoiding agitation.

4.Sensing internal movement
Pause to feel warmth, pulsation, and weight, letting awareness precede absorption.

3. Adjusting Breathing Energy: Guiding the Mind Present

1.Observing natural breathing first
Notice rhythm and depth without control, allowing attention to settle.

2.Gently lengthening the exhalation
A slightly longer out-breath releases tension and grounds energy.

3.Breath as transitional bridge
Breathing links body and mind, guiding the shift from dispersion to focus.

4.Avoiding forced manipulation
Excessive control creates strain and disrupts balance.

4. Settling Mental Energy: From Fragmentation to Unity

1.Setting aside external concerns
Consciously suspend unresolved matters, easing psychological load.

2.Acknowledging the present state
Calm or agitation is recognized without demand for change.

3.Reducing inner conflict
Thoughts are allowed without struggle, preventing energy depletion.

4.Gathering attention on a single object
Lightly resting on breath or posture supports unification.

5. Integrating Energy: Natural Entry into Absorption

1.Allow energy to settle naturally
With relaxation, steady breath, and simplified mind, absorption emerges.

2.Releasing urgency for results
Impatience disturbs energy; trust replaces striving.

3.Maintaining awareness without force
Absorption arises through relaxed clarity, not suppression.

4.Entering meditation in balance
When body–mind energy is harmonized, stability becomes sustainable.

Conclusion

Adjusting body–mind energy before meditation determines the quality of practice. Through regulating body, breath, and mind, scattered energy returns to balance, allowing meditative absorption to arise naturally rather than by effort.
