The Dissolution of the Sense of Time
In meditation, time is not an independently existing entity, but a psychological construct formed by memory, projection, and continuous thinking. When awareness is carried by thought, time is divided into past and future. When awareness rests in the present, the sense of time begins to loosen and may dissolve. The dissolution of time does not mean that time stops, but that attachment to temporal structure weakens. Experience shifts from linear narration to direct presence. When awareness is continuous, stable, and non-attached, the flow of time no longer dominates perception.
1. The Construction of the Sense of Time
1.Dependent on memory and projection
The past is reconstructed from memory, and the future is extended through imagination.
2.Maintained by thinking
Thought links separate moments into a continuous timeline.
3.Based on comparison
Duration arises from evaluation, not from direct experience.
2. Why the Sense of Time Dissolves
1.Awareness returns to the present
Without movement toward past and future, temporal structure weakens.
2.Reduction of thinking activity
Less thinking leads to less narrative continuity.
3.Experience is no longer fragmented
Continuous awareness reveals experience as a flowing whole.
4.Loss of reference points
Without comparison, duration loses meaning.
3. Manifestations of Dissolution
1.Blurring of duration
It becomes unclear how much time has passed.
2.Stronger sense of presence
Experience centers on what is occurring now.
3.Weakened sense of rhythm
Internal structuring by sequence and pace diminishes.
4.Coexistence of stillness and flow
Both change and momentary stillness are perceived.
4. How to Observe Changes in Time Perception
1.Observe how thought creates time
Notice concepts like “before” and “after” arising.
2.Rest in direct experience
Return to breath, body, and immediate sensation.
3.Avoid tracking duration
Reduce measuring how long has passed.
4.Notice gaps and pauses
Time perception weakens in the absence of thought.
5. Transformations from Dissolution
1.Reduced anxiety and anticipation
Future-oriented tension decreases.
2.Increased concentration
Attention remains in the present.
3.More direct experience
Perception becomes clearer without conceptual overlay.
4.Weakened attachment
Dependence on progress and outcome diminishes.
6. Avoiding Deviations
1.Do not pursue a “timeless state”
Forcing it creates tension.
2.Do not deny functional time
Time remains necessary in daily life.
3.Do not treat it as achievement
It is a process, not a goal.
4.Return to awareness itself
Clarity of awareness is primary.
Conclusion
The dissolution of the sense of time reflects the shift from conceptual construction to direct experience. As memory and projection weaken and thought stops weaving continuity, the present is no longer framed by time. The aim is not to eliminate time, but to see how it is constructed. When awareness is stable, clear, and non-attached, time recedes, and experience becomes more immediate and open.
