Sitting Meditation
From Non-Self to Natural Functioning
In meditation, non-self is not a special state to be achieved, but a direct seeing that all experience arises through conditions, without an independent, permanent controller. When this understanding shifts from concept to direct perception, control and grasping begin to loosen. Actions are no longer centered around “I am doing,” but unfold as a centerless flow. This flow is not chaotic, but naturally ordered and responsive within awareness. The key is not the denial of action, but the recognition that action itself is not owned by a self.
1. Understanding Non-Self: No Fixed Subject in Experience
1.All processes are conditionally arisen
Breath, sensation, thought, and emotion arise and change based on conditions, without a core entity.
2.The sense of “I” comes from identification
Grasping certain experiences creates the idea of “this is me” or “this is mine.”
3.Non-self is observation, not belief
It is not a theory to accept, but something directly seen through sustained awareness.
2. Initial Signs of Non-Self Experience
1.Weakening of the sense of doer
In observing breath or body, the feeling of a controller begins to fade.
2.Thoughts are seen, not owned
Thinking is recognized as a process, not “I am thinking.”
3.Experience appears as flow
Body–mind activity is seen as a changing process rather than a fixed identity.
3. Transition from Non-Self to Natural Functioning
1.From control to alignment
Instead of directing everything, one moves in accordance with present conditions.
2.From deliberate action to spontaneous action
Action arises naturally without tension or forced intention.
3.From fragmentation to integration
Action, sensation, and awareness no longer conflict.
4.From analysis to direct response
Less overthinking, more immediate and appropriate action.
4. Characteristics of Natural Functioning
1.Smooth and unobstructed action
Less hesitation and internal resistance.
2.Clear and simple decisions
Direction appears without excessive reasoning.
3.Body–mind coordination
Breath, body, and action align without interference.
4.Continuous awareness in activity
Awareness remains present even during engagement.
5. Supporting This Transition
1.Observe without interfering
Maintain awareness without forcing outcomes.
2.Reduce reinforcement of “I” language
Less internal narration centered on self.
3.Practice awareness in daily actions
Observe how actions occur in walking, speaking, working.
4.Allow uncertainty and change
Do not force fixed conclusions.
6. Common Misunderstandings and Corrections
1.Mistaking non-self for passivity
Non-self does not mean inaction, but non-centered action.
2.Forcing “naturalness”
Trying to appear natural is still fabrication.
3.Losing awareness through passivity
Natural functioning still requires awareness.
4.Staying at conceptual understanding
Direct observation is required beyond theory.
7. Deepening the Transformation
1.From partial to whole experience
Non-self is seen across all aspects of experience.
2.From temporary to stable
The experience becomes more consistent.
3.From observation to embodiment
Non-self is not only seen, but lived.
4.Awareness as foundation
Awareness becomes the ground of all functioning.
Conclusion
The movement from non-self to natural functioning is a shift from seeing “there is no controller” to realizing “functioning does not require a controller.” It is not the removal of action, but the release of self-centered grasping. When control relaxes and awareness stabilizes, body–mind processes unfold naturally, revealing a spontaneous, coherent, and clear mode of being.
