The Root Causes of Emotional Arising
In meditation, emotions are not random disturbances but conditioned responses arising from interacting factors within body and mind. They are not produced by a single cause, but by a chain of processes involving sensation, cognition, memory, and habitual reactions. The “root causes” are not fixed sources, but observable dynamics. When clearly seen, emotions no longer need to be suppressed or expressed blindly, but can be understood as phenomena unfolding in awareness.
1. The Role of Sensation
1.Stimuli trigger feeling tones
External events or internal changes give rise to pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral sensations.
2.Sensation is the base layer of emotion
Before emotion forms, subtle bodily or mental feeling is already present.
2. The Role of Cognition and Interpretation
1.Experience is assigned meaning
The same sensation can be interpreted as threat, gain, or loss.
2.Judgment amplifies reaction
Labels such as “good,” “bad,” “should,” or “should not” transform simple sensation into emotion.
3. Memory and Conditioning
1.Past experience is activated
Similar situations trigger stored memories, extending reaction beyond the present.
2.Habitual patterns operate automatically
Conditioned responses strengthen emotion before awareness intervenes.
4. Grasping and Aversion
1.Grasping toward pleasant experience
Desire to hold or repeat leads to craving and anxiety.
2.Aversion to unpleasant experience
Resistance leads to anger, fear, or suppression.
5. Self-Identification
1.Experience becomes “I” or “mine”
Emotion is linked to identity, increasing its intensity.
2.Protecting self-image
Conflict between reality and self-concept intensifies emotional reaction.
6. Absence of Awareness
1.Failure to notice early changes
The progression from subtle sensation to strong emotion goes unseen.
2.Automatic reaction replaces observation
Without awareness, reaction unfolds without interruption.
7. Structural Summary
1.Trigger: sensation arises
Initial feeling emerges from stimulus.
2.Processing: cognition and memory engage
Interpretation and association expand the experience.
3.Amplification: grasping and aversion
Pushing or resisting strengthens the reaction.
4.Solidification: self-identification
Emotion becomes tied to identity.
5.Escalation: lack of awareness
Automatic reaction completes the emotional process.
Conclusion
Emotions arise through the interaction of sensation, cognition, memory, grasping, and absence of awareness. They are not singular events, but conditioned processes. When these processes are clearly seen, emotions lose their apparent solidity and become understandable, workable phenomena within awareness.
