Sitting Meditation
From Being Carried Away by Thought to Leading Thought
In meditation, beginners are often carried away by thinking: once a thought arises, attention follows it, and awareness is quickly lost. “Leading thought” does not mean suppressing or eliminating thinking, but allowing thoughts to be seen clearly within stable awareness, so they no longer control the mind. The shift lies not in reducing the number of thoughts, but in changing the relationship to them—from being absorbed to observing directly.
1. Signs of Being Carried Away by Thought
1.Automatic continuation of thought
A single thought develops into a chain without awareness.
2.Awareness is overshadowed
Perception of breath, body, or present experience fades.
3.Lack of interruption ability
Recognition occurs only after distraction has ended.
4.Feedback loop with emotion
Thoughts and emotions reinforce each other.
2. Meaning of Leading Thought
1.Thought becomes an object of observation
Thoughts are seen as they arise.
2.Awareness remains present
There is knowing that thinking is occurring.
3.Choice becomes possible
Thought can be continued or released.
4.Separation between awareness and thought
Thought is no longer identified as self.
3. Key Mechanisms of the Shift
1.Awareness precedes reaction
Thought is noticed at its beginning.
2.Shortened recognition delay
Observation becomes immediate.
3.Stable observing position
Awareness remains anchored.
4.Reduced engagement with content
Less analysis weakens thought chains.
4. Training Process
1.Sustain attention on breath or body
Maintain a stable base for awareness.
2.Label the arising of thought
Simply recognize “thinking.”
3.Maintain partial awareness during thinking
Keep some presence even when thinking occurs.
4.Return repeatedly to the present
Each recognition leads back to awareness.
5. Stages of Development
1.Fully carried away
Long immersion without awareness.
2.Midway recognition
Awareness arises during thinking.
3.Early recognition
Thought is noticed at its start.
4.Immediate release
Thought dissolves quickly.
5.Coexistence of thought and awareness
Thinking occurs without losing awareness.
6. Common Deviations and Corrections
1.Suppressing thought
Leads to tension; shift to observation.
2.Attachment to no-thought state
Creates new grasping; return to awareness.
3.Analyzing content
Extends thinking; maintain distance.
4.Self-judgment
Increases disturbance; remain neutral.
7. Characteristics After the Shift
1.Simplified thinking
Thought becomes concise and functional.
2.Reduced influence
Thought no longer dominates mind or action.
3.Continuous awareness
Clarity remains even during thinking.
4.Expanded inner space
Awareness is no longer filled entirely by thought.
Conclusion
The transition from being carried by thought to leading thought is a shift from passivity to clarity. It is not about controlling thought, but about seeing it. When awareness remains present, thought loses its grip and becomes an observed phenomenon. The mind moves from entanglement to clarity, from reactivity to freedom.
