How Awareness Encompasses All Phenomena

In meditation, “encompassing all phenomena” is not an act of deliberate acceptance or intentional allowing. It is what naturally appears when awareness no longer selects, rejects, or clings. Phenomena are already arising and passing on their own. When awareness does not interfere, their full nature becomes evident. Inclusion is not an attitude, but the result of awareness no longer being confined. It is not expansion, but the natural openness that remains when boundaries fall away.

1. Understanding the Meaning of Inclusion

1.Inclusion is not forced acceptance
It is not saying “this is okay” to unpleasant experience, but seeing it as it is without interference.

2.Inclusion is not agreement
Awareness recognizes the presence of phenomena without endorsing or identifying with them.

3.Inclusion arises from non-rejection and non-grasping
When pain is not resisted and pleasure is not pursued, all phenomena are naturally included.

2. How Awareness Naturally Encompasses Phenomena

1.Awareness has no bias
It simply knows what appears, without preference.

2.Phenomena arise and pass within awareness
Sensations, thoughts, and emotions unfold and dissolve without needing to be managed.

3.Awareness does not interfere
Without analysis or continuation, phenomena remain in their natural process.

4.Awareness does not establish boundaries
Without a central “self,” distinctions between inner and outer lose their rigidity.

3. The Shift Toward Natural Inclusion

1.From resisting discomfort to observing it
Pain is no longer avoided but directly known.

2.From chasing pleasure to equanimity
Pleasant states are not grasped but allowed to change.

3.From being absorbed in thought to seeing thought
Thoughts are observed as events, not entered as narratives.

4.From selective attention to open awareness
Awareness expands from a single object to the whole field.

4. Practical Approach

1.Establish a stable base of awareness
Use breath or bodily sensation to anchor attention.

2.Gradually widen the field
Expand from localized awareness to include body, emotion, and thought.

3.Maintain non-interfering observation
Do not attempt to modify experience.

4.Sustain awareness through change
Remain present as phenomena shift.

5. Signs of Inclusive Awareness

1.Reduced resistance
Less internal opposition to discomfort.

2.Less attachment to states
No fixation on preferred experiences.

3.Naturally expanded awareness
Multiple phenomena are known simultaneously.

4.Stable openness
Awareness is no longer confined to narrow focus.

6. Common Deviations and Corrections

1.Mistaking inclusion for suppression
Apparent acceptance hides avoidance; return to direct knowing.

2.Mistaking inclusion for indulgence
Allowing thoughts to unfold without awareness; maintain clarity.

3.Forcing expansion
Effortful widening creates tension; allow natural unfolding.

4.Attachment to non-discrimination
Clinging to a “state” becomes another fixation; return to immediacy.

Conclusion

Awareness encompasses all phenomena not through effort, but through the absence of rejection, grasping, and interference. When awareness is no longer confined by preference or resistance, phenomena arise and pass freely within it. True inclusion is not about enlarging experience, but about releasing boundaries. It is not about controlling what appears, but about clearly knowing its arising and passing without being carried away.
