Direct Experience of Awareness and “Being”
In meditation, “being” is not a concept to be defined or understood, but an immediate experience present in the moment. Awareness is not an activity directed toward an object, but the very clarity in which all experience appears. When awareness is no longer carried by thought or shaped by interpretation, experience shifts from “I am aware of something” to the simple presence of awareness itself. Direct experience does not rely on language or reasoning; it is what is immediately known here and now.
1. Understanding the Relationship Between Awareness and Being
1.Awareness is not an object
It cannot be seen or grasped as a thing; it is the condition for all experience.
2.Being is not a concept
It is not an idea but the undeniable presence of what is.
3.They are inseparable
Without awareness, being cannot be known; without being, awareness has nothing to reveal.
2. From Indirect to Direct Experience
1.Indirect experience relies on thought
Concepts, memory, and labels mediate perception.
2.Direct experience is immediate
Sensation and perception are known without interpretation.
3.Shifting from explanation to presence
Rather than asking “what is this,” one sees “what is happening.”
3. Conditions for Direct Experience
1.Reduction of thought
Less mental activity allows awareness to remain uncovered.
2.Stable attention
Awareness can remain without frequent interruption.
3.Relaxed body–mind
Less tension allows experience to unfold naturally.
4.Non-attachment to experience
No attempt to fix or repeat sensations.
4. Characteristics of Direct Experience
1.Clarity and simplicity
Experience is direct and unconfused.
2.Weakening of self-center
The sense of “I am experiencing” fades.
3.Diminished sense of time
Past and future recede, and the present stands clear.
4.Fluidity of experience
All phenomena are seen as changing processes.
5. Approaching Direct Experience
1.Return to immediate sensation
Breath, body, and sound ground awareness.
2.Reduce verbalization
Let experience appear without naming.
3.Maintain continuity of awareness
Avoid fragmented attention.
4.Allow arising and passing
Do not resist or hold experience.
6. Common Misunderstandings and Corrections
1.Treating direct experience as a goal
Seeking turns it into a concept; return to immediacy.
2.Confusing intensity with reality
Strong sensations are not necessarily more real.
3.Trying to sustain a state
Maintenance introduces effort; allow change.
4.Falling into dullness
Restore clarity if awareness becomes vague.
7. Integration of Awareness and Being
1.Awareness no longer points to objects
It becomes open and inclusive.
2.Being is directly experienced
Not understood through thought, but lived.
3.The boundary between observer and experience softens
The division between “self” and “object” weakens.
4.Stability without rigidity
Awareness continues without becoming fixed.
Conclusion
The direct experience of awareness and being is a shift from conceptual understanding to immediate presence. It is not the attainment of a special state, but the uncovering of what is already here. When awareness is no longer entangled with thought or attachment, being reveals itself in its simplest and clearest form.
