须陀比丘之宿缘
昔日,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园,与一千二百五十位比丘一起。当时有一国王名旃陀越,信奉婆罗门教,并任用婆罗门们来协助治理国家。
旃陀越国王有一位小夫人,最受宠爱,加上又怀孕,国王的其他夫人因此更加厌恶、嫉妒她,于是用金子贿赂婆罗门,令婆罗门向国王进谗言,说:「此女是个凶恶之人,若生下儿子,将来必成为国家的祸患。」国王一听,非常忧愁,便问:「该怎么办?」婆罗门言:「只有处死母子。」国王言:「人命至重,怎可杀之?」婆罗门答道:「若不杀,将来必有亡国丧命之患,祸害甚大。」国王听信谗言,将小夫人杀了之后埋葬。
不久后,孩子在墓中出生,因小夫人上半身尚未腐败,此小儿乃得以饮其乳汁以活命。三年后,因墓冢塌陷,小儿便得以离开坟墓,白天与鸟兽一起游戏,夜晚再回到墓中。小儿长到六岁时,佛愍念其苦,即化作一沙门,前去找他,问道:「你是谁家的孩子?住在哪里?」小儿回答:「我无家可居,只能住在这墓中。我希望能跟随道人离开此处。」佛问:「你跟随我离开,今后有何打算?」小孩答道:「从今以后,不管好坏,都会跟随着道人。」
佛便将小儿带回精舍,小儿见到比丘们威仪庠序,心生欢喜,便对佛言:「我想出家作比丘。」佛即听允,便以手摩小儿头,小儿头发自落,袈裟自然着身,佛并为其取名「须陀」。出家后,须陀从佛受戒,精进用功,心不懈怠,七日便证得罗汉果。
佛对须陀言:「你从佛受戒,拔除生死根,已得生死自在,现在应前去度化旃陀越王。」须陀遵从佛的指示,顶礼佛后,即前往旃陀越王的国家,来到宫门,请求觐见国王。臣子回禀旃陀越王:「宫门外有一道人,欲求见大王。」
旃陀越王听闻后,即出来相见,并问:「我心中有一大忧愁,该如何是好?」须陀问:「国王的忧愁是什么?」旃陀越王言:「我年岁已高,但无子嗣继承治理国家,为此事甚感忧愁。」须陀听闻后,并没有立即回答,只是独自笑着。
旃陀越王见状,生气地说道:「我对道人说话,道人不仅不回答,反而还独自笑着。」便想要治罪杀害须陀。须陀知道旃陀越王的心念,便腾空飞起,住止于空中,变现不同分身,出入自在。旃陀越王见其威神变化,惊恐并后悔地说道:「我实在愚痴,不辨道人真伪,唯愿尊者能从空中下来,令我能皈依您。」
须陀即从空中而下,立在旃陀越王面前,对王说道:「王能自愿皈依我,自然是好事,但更应去皈依佛。佛是我师,三界之尊,能度脱一切众生。」旃陀越王闻言,便命令群臣准备车驾,欲前往佛所。此时须陀即以神通力,将国王一行人带至佛所,众人至诚顶礼佛,皈依三宝,并求受五戒,成为优婆塞。
佛对旃陀越王言:「此须陀比丘是王昔日听信婆罗门谗言,所杀的小夫人腹中之子。母亲死后,孩子便在墓中出生,因为母亲的上半身尚未腐败,因此小儿得以饮其乳汁而存活,直到六岁,随我出家修道,得证道果。」王听闻佛言,惊恐不已。
佛接着说道:「昔日拘先尼佛住世时,有一国王名佛舍达,国中三亿人民皆随国王供养三宝。当时有一贫人,常受雇替国中的富人放牧,照养着数百头牛。此贫人见国王及人民供养比丘僧,便问:『你们在做什么?』众人答言:『我们在供养三宝,以后会获得供养的福报。』此人又问:『能得什么福?』众人回答:『若能以清净心供养三宝,未来所生之处都会安乐尊贵。』此人心想:『我实在贫穷,只能受雇替人放牧,自己尚且不得饮食,要拿什么供养?』随即想到:『唯有回去挤出牛乳,做成酪酥,然后以清净心供养比丘。』如此做之后,比丘们为其祝愿:『愿你世世所投生处,皆得供养之福,或投生为天人,或生为王侯。』
此后,贫人有一世投生为国王,外出游猎时,见国内百姓有一上好的怀孕母牛,王便命人将母牛杀来吃。当时国王的夫人对国王说道:『不要让人杀害了母牛腹中的小牛。』这时牛主人正好追来,于是赶紧将母牛剖腹取出小牛,带回家养。牛主人愤怒地说道:『当令国王将来和这头牛一样。』此贫人之后辗转投生为旃陀越王您的孩子,这就是须陀比丘的前身,尚未出生,其母亲即被王所杀;被杀害的母亲,即是当时的国王夫人;当时的牛主人,是婆罗门的前身。须陀比丘于墓中出生时,其母上半身尚未腐败,因此得以饮其乳汁长大,这是由于过去以酪酥供养比丘的因缘。」
佛接着开示道:「罪福之报,如影随形,未有行善不得福,为恶不受恶报者。」
旃陀越王闻佛说法,心开意解,即得须陀洹果;国内人民皆跟随国王奉行五戒、十善、皈依三宝,有人证得须陀洹、斯陀含、阿那含或阿罗汉。佛的四众弟子、天龙鬼神,闻佛所说,皆欢喜奉行,作礼而退。

The Past Karmic Conditions of the Bhikṣu Suda
In the past, the Buddha resided at Jetavana in Śrāvastī with one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus. At that time, there was a king named Chandayue who believed in Brahmanism and employed Brahmins to assist in governing the state.
King Chandayue had a junior consort who was most favored and was also pregnant. The other consorts, filled with jealousy and hatred, bribed the Brahmins with gold and had them slander her before the king, saying, “This woman is inauspicious. If she gives birth to a son, he will become a calamity to the nation.” The king became deeply worried and asked what should be done. The Brahmins replied, “Only by killing both mother and child.” The king hesitated, but persuaded by their words, he eventually ordered the killing and burial of the consort.
Soon after, the child was born within the tomb. Because the upper body of the mother had not yet decayed, the child survived by drinking her milk. After three years, when the tomb collapsed, the child was able to come out, playing with birds and beasts by day and returning to the tomb at night. At the age of six, the Buddha, moved by compassion, transformed into a śramaṇa and approached him, asking, “Whose child are you? Where do you live?” The boy replied, “I have no home and can only stay in this tomb. I wish to follow you and leave this place.”
The Buddha brought the child back to the monastery. Seeing the orderly conduct of the bhikṣus, the child rejoiced and requested ordination. The Buddha consented, touched his head, whereupon his hair fell off and robes appeared naturally. The Buddha named him Suda. After ordination, Suda practiced diligently and, within seven days, attained arhatship.
The Buddha then instructed him to go and convert King Chandayue. Suda obeyed and went to the palace, requesting an audience.
The king came out and said he was troubled by having no heir. Suda, hearing this, only smiled. The king became angry and sought to punish him. Suda then rose into the air, displaying supernatural powers. The king, astonished, repented and asked to take refuge.
Suda told him to take refuge in the Buddha. The king and his retinue were transported by Suda’s powers to the Buddha, where they bowed and received the Five Precepts.
The Buddha revealed that Suda was the very child the king had ordered killed in the womb. The king was terrified upon hearing this.
The Buddha further explained that in a past life, during the time of Buddha Kusenī, a poor man had offered dairy products to the Saṅgha with a pure mind and received blessings. In later lives, he became a king but created negative karma by killing a pregnant cow. The consequences of these actions led to his present circumstances.
The Buddha then taught that karmic retribution follows like a shadow, never failing.
Upon hearing the Dharma, King Chandayue attained Stream-entry, and many people followed the path, observing precepts and realizing various stages of awakening. All rejoiced, bowed, and departed.
