修福无厌成道胜缘
佛在舍卫国时,一日,得知城中有因缘成熟之人即将得度,于是带着侍者阿难入城乞食。当时佛身上所穿的袈裟有一些破洞,乞食结束后回到精舍,即有一婆罗门跟随而来,恭敬地向佛问讯作礼,说道:“我在城内看见您的相貌圆满庄严,行走间威仪堂堂,令人十分敬重;又见您身上的衣服有些破损,心想这一定是位德行高尚的修行人。所以我省下日用开销,并将家中值钱的东西变卖,换来一些珍贵的白毡,希望能供养您,修补身上法服破损的地方。”佛陀微笑点头应允,婆罗门见佛收下白毡,心中欢喜不已。世尊知道婆罗门的善心已发,便为他授记:“未来二大阿僧祇劫中,你当成佛,如我一般,十号具足,神通相好。”婆罗门听了之后更是法喜,礼拜世尊,感恩无比。
世尊为婆罗门授记作佛一事很快地在国内传开,许多豪贵大臣、长者、居士都起了这样的念头:“为什么小小一块白毡,有这么大的福报?”于是大家开始积极地以各种上好衣料为佛作三衣,争相送至精舍供养世尊。
侍者阿难看到这样的盛况,不禁问佛:“过去世尊是作了怎样的善行,今生才能得这些富贵之人奉施衣物而不悭惜?”
佛陀平静地回答:“在久远劫前,有佛出世,号‘毗婆尸佛’,徒众多达九万多人,当时护法中有一国王名‘?头’,我于那一世为?头王的大臣。我因见佛出世因缘极难遭遇,发心想要请佛与众僧前来应供,三月之间日日供给,不令匮乏。毗婆尸佛慈悲地接受了我的请求;此时,?头王也想供养佛僧,无奈佛陀答应我在先,国王便希望大臣将这次的机会让给他。于是我对国王说:‘如果您能保证三件事情,臣下就将此次的因缘先让给您。一者,保证我的生命没有无常;二者,保证佛陀常住我国;三者,保证国土常乐无殃。’?头王低头一想:这三件事果真难办!继而再同我商量:‘不然你请一日,我请一日,我们两人共同成就供佛的功德如何?’于是我与?头王轮流设斋,各满所愿。我不仅斋僧,更为九万比丘作七条衣,人人都得一领袈裟。”
佛陀告诉阿难:“我生生世世布施植福不疲不厌,今日所得皆有前因,不是虚受信施!”此时在场所有的佛弟子、护法善信听闻佛语,悉皆信心大增、踊跃欢喜,发愿勤修福慧、不生退却。

The Supreme Cause for Attaining the Path through Tireless Cultivation of Merit
When the Buddha was in Śrāvastī, one day he knew that someone in the city had mature conditions for liberation. Thus, he took his attendant Ānanda and went into the city for alms. At that time, the Buddha’s robe had some tears. After returning to the monastery, a brāhmaṇa followed him, respectfully bowed, and said, “In the city I saw your appearance, perfectly adorned and dignified in every movement, inspiring deep respect. Yet I also noticed your robe was somewhat worn and thought you must be a practitioner of great virtue. Therefore, I saved from my daily expenses and sold valuables from my home to obtain a fine white felt, hoping to offer it to you to mend your robe.” The Buddha smiled and accepted. The brāhmaṇa rejoiced. Knowing his wholesome mind had arisen, the World-Honored One gave him a prediction: “In the future, after two great asaṃkhyeya kalpas, you will become a Buddha like me, endowed with the ten titles and all spiritual powers and marks.” Hearing this, the brāhmaṇa was filled with Dharma joy, bowed, and felt deep gratitude.
The Buddha’s prediction soon spread throughout the land. Many nobles, ministers, elders, and laypeople wondered, “How can such a small piece of white felt bring such great merit?” Thus, they began eagerly making robes of fine materials and offering them to the Buddha.
Ānanda, seeing this scene, asked, “What wholesome deeds did the World-Honored One perform in past lives to receive such offerings from the wealthy without their reluctance?”
The Buddha replied calmly, “In the distant past, a Buddha named Vipaśyin appeared in the world, with over ninety thousand disciples. Among his supporters was a king named ?头, and I was his minister. Seeing that encountering a Buddha is exceedingly rare, I vowed to invite the Buddha and the Saṅgha for offerings, providing daily for three months without deficiency. The Buddha compassionately accepted. At that time, the king also wished to make offerings, but since the Buddha had already accepted mine, the king asked me to yield the opportunity. I said, ‘If you can guarantee three things, I will yield: that my life will not encounter impermanence, that the Buddha will always remain in our land, and that the country will always be free from calamity.’ The king realized these were impossible and proposed, ‘Then let us alternate—one day you, one day I—so we both accomplish this merit.’ Thus, we alternated offerings. I not only offered meals but also made seven-strip robes for ninety thousand monks, each receiving one robe.”
The Buddha told Ānanda, “Life after life, I have practiced giving and cultivated merit without weariness. What I receive today all has past causes; it is not received in vain.” Hearing this, all the disciples and faithful supporters present greatly increased their faith, rejoiced, and resolved to diligently cultivate merit and wisdom without retreat.
