The Buddha’s Majestic Virtue Subdues the Heretics

In the past, there were six heretical teachers who were attached to worldly fame and gain, each claiming to be the most supreme and exalted. One day, hearing that the Buddha’s spiritual powers and majestic virtue far surpassed ordinary people, the six gathered and discussed, “Our cultivation surpasses that of ordinary people, yet we now hear that the Buddha exceeds us. We must deliberate on how to surpass Gautama.”

They sent an attendant to observe the Tathāgata’s appearance, demeanor, gaze, and courage to see if it matched what people said. Upon seeing Gautama, the attendant was immediately captivated, unable to avert his eyes or leave. Returning, he reported, “Gautama’s appearance is rare in the world; his majestic presence surpasses the brilliance of the sun and moon—nothing I have seen compares.” Yet the six thought, “He was born into royalty; it is only natural that he appears dignified. This is nothing remarkable.”

They then sent another to observe his bearing, whether he was restless or uneasy. Instead, he found Gautama among people like a lion among beasts, utterly fearless. They reasoned, “People are deluded, drawn by his radiance; this is nothing unusual. Besides, being raised in luxury with constant entertainment, he surely has not applied himself to study.” So they sent a learned man to hear his teaching, but found that Gautama’s Dharma penetrated past and present, with precise and lucid analysis.

They reflected, “Some people are skilled in eloquence to please others, yet their words are not ultimate truth.” So they sent another to observe the listeners—whether they were attentive or distracted. Instead, all listened with deep admiration and unwavering focus. Still, the six consoled themselves, “New followers are always zealous at first; over time they will disperse.”

Later, they again sent someone to examine whether Gautama’s teachings were profound or shallow. The attendant returned, saying, “His Dharma is vast like the ocean, while what we know is as shallow as water in a hoofprint. Even I now wish to become his disciple—how much more so others!”

Thus, many people went to hear the Buddha. Those with firm resolve followed him in practice; those still in doubt returned to the six teachers and recounted what they had heard. Only then did the six realize that in the three realms, the Buddha alone is truly supreme, and none can equal his ability to guide beings. They dismissed their followers, allowing each to seek true peace.
