佛现火光度诸外道

  佛陀时代,私诃牒国有一座高山,名为“私休遮他”,山中有五百位修行人在此精进用功。每个人都认为自己成就了广大神通,达到究竟的涅?境界。当时,佛陀初初证悟,开始弘化四方,开演诸多微妙法门,这些修行人虽有得度因缘,却未亲近佛陀。

  一天,佛陀观察他们的得度因缘成熟,便独自前往这座山中,欲度化这五百位修行人。佛陀缓步来到一棵大树下,端身正坐,入大禅定,身放百千光明,遍照整座山林。五百位修行人看见这种奇异的景象,以为火烧山林,个个惊慌怖畏,持咒引水欲灭除火焰。然而,用尽了所有的神通力,也无法令其消失。

  就在每个人满怀疑惑之际,突然远远看见佛陀在树下专注打坐,光明晃耀有如日出金山,因着好奇,他们来到佛陀面前。佛问他们从何处来,修行人回答:“我们在山里修行许久,今日因看见有火光之相,以为火烧树林,所以才来到这里。”佛说:“这是福德之火,不会伤害任何人,我来这里是为了解开你们的无明之结。”五百位修行人议论纷纷,认为他们所了解的九十六种外道之中,并没有像佛陀这样的人。佛陀向他们解释,自己本来是悉达多太子,舍弃王位而出家求道,现已成就佛道,能回答任何修行的问题。

  于是,五百位修行人向佛至诚礼拜,请示佛陀:“我们所学的《四无碍经》,含括天文、地理、君王治理国家、统领人民的方法,以及九十六种道术。这些是涅?法门吗?希望佛陀为我们解说,增广我们的见闻。”佛陀回答:“久远以来无数劫中,我经常学习这部经典,也修得五种神通,可以任意移动高山或使河流停歇,但依然生死流转不休,从未听过有依此得证涅?或修道有成者。因此,你们现今所修习的种种,并非真正的修行。”于是,佛陀开示道:

  真正的修行人,断绝生命烦恼之流,内心无欲无求,身口业三业清净。

  自在的修行人,破除我执、法执,心如虚空,无染无着,欲望烦恼皆得解脱。

  虔敬的修行人,舍离须发衣饰的好乐,诚心正意如法修行。

  勇敢的修行人,降伏种种恶业烦恼,犹如蛇蜕重生。

  精进的修行人,断绝世事羁绊,言语慈悲柔软,恒常修持八种圣道。

  清净的修行人,远离恩爱尘缘,心不执着,无欲无贪。

  法喜的修行人,常自独处念道,不乐群聚愦闹,惟好清净涅?,不入诸趣流转。

  智慧的修行人,通达宿命,尽除生死轮转因由,清净光明,发起神通妙用无穷。

  佛陀又开示这些修行人,自认所修已通达涅?,就好比少水之鱼,如何能得到真正的快乐?他们听闻佛陀的法音,内心欣喜无量,个个自愿礼佛为师,即时须发自落而为沙门,最后皆因行持清净而得证阿罗汉果。

The Buddha Manifests Firelight to Convert Heretics

  During the time of the Buddha, in the country of Sihadie, there was a great mountain called “Siu Xiuzheta,” where five hundred practitioners diligently cultivated. Each believed that they had attained great supernatural powers and reached the ultimate state of nirvāṇa. At that time, the Buddha had just attained enlightenment and had begun to teach widely, expounding many profound Dharma teachings. Although these practitioners had the conditions for liberation, they had not yet drawn near to the Buddha.

  One day, observing that their conditions for liberation had matured, the Buddha went alone to the mountain to guide them. He slowly approached a great tree, sat upright, entered deep meditation, and emitted hundreds of thousands of rays of light, illuminating the entire mountain forest. The five hundred practitioners saw this extraordinary sight and thought the forest was on fire. They became frightened and attempted to extinguish the flames by reciting spells and drawing water. However, despite exhausting all their supernatural powers, they could not make it disappear.

  While they were filled with doubt, they suddenly saw the Buddha seated beneath the tree, radiant like a golden mountain at sunrise. Out of curiosity, they approached him. The Buddha asked where they had come from, and they replied, “We have practiced in the mountains for a long time. Today, seeing this fiery light, we thought the forest was burning, so we came here.” The Buddha said, “This is the fire of merit; it harms no one. I have come to untie the knots of your ignorance.” The practitioners discussed among themselves, saying that among the ninety-six heretical paths they knew, there was none like the Buddha. The Buddha explained that he had once been Prince Siddhārtha, who renounced the throne to seek the Way and had now attained Buddhahood, able to answer any question regarding practice.

  The five hundred practitioners then bowed sincerely and asked, “The ‘Four Unobstructed Knowledges’ we study include astronomy, geography, governance, and various techniques of the ninety-six paths. Are these the methods of nirvāṇa? Please explain and expand our understanding.” The Buddha replied, “For countless kalpas, I studied such teachings and attained five kinds of supernatural powers, able to move mountains and stop rivers. Yet I remained within the cycle of birth and death and never heard of anyone attaining nirvāṇa through these means. Therefore, what you now practice is not true cultivation.” The Buddha then taught:

  A true practitioner cuts off the جریان of afflictions, has no desires, and maintains purity in body, speech, and mind.

  A liberated practitioner breaks attachment to self and phenomena, with a mind like empty space, free from defilement and attachment.

  A devout practitioner abandons adornments and practices sincerely in accordance with the Dharma.

  A courageous practitioner subdues all evil afflictions, like a snake shedding its skin.

  A diligent practitioner cuts off worldly entanglements, speaks with compassion and gentleness, and constantly cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path.

  A pure practitioner distances from emotional attachments, without grasping, free from desire and greed.

  A practitioner joyful in Dharma delights in solitude, avoids noisy gatherings, and seeks only the purity of nirvāṇa, no longer cycling through realms.

  A wise practitioner understands past lives, eradicates the causes of cyclic existence, and manifests pure radiance and boundless spiritual abilities.

  The Buddha further taught that those who believe they have attained nirvāṇa are like fish in shallow water—how could they obtain true happiness? Upon hearing the Buddha’s teaching, they were filled with immeasurable joy. All willingly took refuge, bowed to the Buddha as their teacher, their hair fell away, and they became monks. Through pure practice, they all ultimately attained arhatship.
