The Cause and Conditions for Brahmā’s Request for the Buddha to Teach
More than three thousand years ago, in the Indian kingdom of Magadha, Śākyamuni Buddha attained the unsurpassed enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree at the supreme place of awakening. After first realizing the Way, the Buddha reflected that beings in the evil age of the five defilements were deluded and inverted, difficult to teach and transform. Remaining long in the world would bring no benefit, and he intended to enter final nirvāṇa.
At that time, the Great Brahmā King, knowing the Buddha’s thought, went to see him, paid homage with reverence, knelt with palms joined, and entreated the Buddha to remain in the world out of compassion and to turn the great Dharma wheel. The Buddha told the Great Brahmā King, “All beings are defiled by dust and impurities, attached to worldly desires, and obscured from clear wisdom. If I remain to teach, it will be in vain; it is better to quickly enter nirvāṇa.” Hearing this, the Great Brahmā King again bowed and earnestly entreated:
“Buddha! Now the ocean of Dharma is full, the banner of Dharma has been raised, and the time and conditions for transforming beings have matured. There are many who can receive the Buddha’s deliverance. How can the World-Honored One choose to enter extinction and cause beings to lose their opportunity for liberation? Moreover, throughout countless past kalpas, you have aroused the supreme bodhi mind, gathered the medicine of Dharma for beings, and even for the sake of a single verse relinquished your own body, wife, and children. Why now would you not care for beings and wish to enter nirvāṇa?”
Then the Great Brahmā King recounted in detail the Buddha’s past acts of seeking the Dharma for the sake of beings: as King Miaose, he gave up his own wife to a yakṣa manifested by Vaiśravaṇa in order to obtain the true Dharma; as King Qianzhanipo-li, he burned his own body as a lamp offering to seek the wondrous Dharma for the benefit of the people; as King Pilengjieli, he endured the piercing of a thousand iron nails in pursuit of the Dharma; as Prince Tanmoqian, he cast himself into a blazing fire pit as an offering to seek the great Dharma; as the sage Jueduoluo, he vowed to use his skin as paper, bones as a pen, and blood as ink to record the Dharma so all beings might read and practice; and as King Śibi, he cut his own flesh to feed a starving hawk.
The Great Brahmā King praised the Buddha’s past bodhisattva vows of self-sacrifice in seeking the Dharma and benefiting beings, and urged him that since the ocean of Dharma was full, the banner raised, the drum established, and the torch lit, the time for liberating beings had matured. He requested the Buddha to remain in the world and turn the great Dharma wheel. In response to this request, the Buddha went to the Deer Park in Vārāṇasī and taught the Four Noble Truths, thereby guiding beings. At that time, the Buddha, the Four Noble Truths, and the five bhikṣus all appeared together, and thus the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha came into the world.
