福田殊胜的只树给孤独园
舍卫城中,有一大臣名为须达,因乐善好施,常帮助孤苦无依的人,所以城中人民皆尊称他为“给孤独长者”。长者见佛闻法后,欢喜无量,随即买下太子的祇陀园,欲供养佛陀,成就精舍。有一天和舍利弗尊者一起前往祇陀园,舍利弗欣然微笑的对须达长者说:“因你布施的因缘,现在在六欲天中的宫殿已经成就。”须达长者藉由舍利弗的道眼,看到六欲天中的宫殿庄严无比,于是请示舍利弗:“尊者,在六欲天中什么地方最快乐?”舍利弗说:“四天王天、忉利天、夜摩天之下三天天人为色欲所迷惑,上二天之化乐天、他化自在天天人则非常骄逸放纵,而第四天的兜率天天人则少欲知足,并且恒常有一生补处菩萨转生其中,在此说法。”长者听后即说:“那我应该要生到第四天中。”话一说完,其他天中的宫殿随即消失,只留下第四天的宫殿仍然安立。
回到祇园后,舍利弗尊者忽然一脸忧愁地望着地上的一只蚂蚁。长者好奇地请示尊者:“这只蚂蚁为何令尊者心生忧愁?”尊者随即说起了这段因缘:“过去七佛时,你都为佛陀在此发心建造精舍,当时这只蚂蚁也受生于此。没想到经过了九十一劫,直至今日,这只蚂蚁依然受生为蚂蚁,不得解脱,可见种植福田在生死轮回中是多么的重要。”长者听完后,心中非常悲悯不舍。
祇陀园整地后即启建精舍,长者使用上好的栴檀香泥广建房舍一千二百间,种种设施完备无缺。建造完成后,随即请国王派遣使者到王舍城迎请佛陀及众僧。佛陀在四众弟子的随行下,前往舍卫国,沿途度人无数。抵达舍卫城边时,百姓们手持供具和种种供养,迎接世尊的到来。世尊放大光明,照耀三千大千世界,足指按地,大地为之震动,种种管弦歌乐,不吹自鸣;盲聋喑哑随即痊愈,诸根具足。城中男女老少见此瑞象皆欢喜踊跃,有十八亿人齐聚佛所。世尊随即应众生根机宣说妙法,度化大众,当中有成就须陀洹、斯陀含、阿那含、阿罗汉等四果者,也有成就辟支佛和发无上菩提心者。每个人各依所证,欢喜奉行佛陀的教导。
佛陀告诉阿难,这个园地既是须达所买,林树花果是祇陀太子所献,两人同心共同成就,所以此园应号称“太子祇树给孤独园”,以流传后世。阿难及诸四众弟子,依照佛陀所言,谨遵奉行。

The Supreme Field of Merit: Jetavana, the Grove of Jeta and Anāthapiṇḍada
In the city of Śrāvastī, there was a minister named Sudatta. Because he delighted in generosity and often aided the lonely and destitute, the people respectfully called him “the Elder Anāthapiṇḍada.” After seeing the Buddha and hearing the Dharma, he was filled with immeasurable joy and immediately purchased Prince Jeta’s grove to offer it to the Buddha and establish a monastery. One day, while visiting the grove with the Venerable Śāriputra, Śāriputra smiled and said, “Through the causes and conditions of your giving, palaces in the Six Desire Heavens have now been accomplished.” Through Śāriputra’s insight, Sudatta beheld the magnificence of those heavenly palaces and asked, “Venerable one, which place among the Six Desire Heavens is the most blissful?” Śāriputra replied, “The beings of the lower three heavens—the Heaven of the Four Kings, the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, and the Yāma Heaven—are still deluded by sensual desire. The beings of the upper two heavens—the Nirmāṇarati Heaven and the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven—are exceedingly indulgent and arrogant. Only the fourth, the Tuṣita Heaven, is where beings have few desires and know contentment, and where Bodhisattvas destined for one more birth are reborn and teach the Dharma.” Upon hearing this, the elder said, “Then I should aspire to be reborn in the fourth heaven.” As soon as he spoke, the palaces in the other heavens disappeared, leaving only the palace of the fourth heaven remaining.
After returning to Jetavana, Śāriputra suddenly gazed sorrowfully at an ant on the ground. The elder asked, “Why does this ant cause you such concern?” Śāriputra explained, “In the time of the past seven Buddhas, you made vows here to build monasteries for them, and this ant was also born here. Yet after ninety-one kalpas, it still remains an ant and has not attained liberation. This shows how crucial it is to cultivate fields of merit within the cycle of birth and death.” Hearing this, the elder was filled with deep compassion.
After the land was prepared, construction of the monastery began. Using fine sandalwood paste, the elder built twelve hundred residences with complete facilities. When completed, he requested the king to send envoys to Rājagṛha to invite the Buddha and the Saṅgha. Accompanied by the fourfold assembly, the Buddha journeyed to Śrāvastī, liberating countless beings along the way. When he arrived near the city, the people came forth with offerings to welcome him. The Buddha emitted great radiance, illuminating the three thousand great thousand worlds. When he pressed his toe upon the earth, it trembled; celestial music resounded without being played; the blind, deaf, and mute were healed. Men and women of all ages rejoiced, and 1.8 billion beings gathered. The Buddha taught according to their capacities, leading many to attain the fruits of Stream-entry, Once-returning, Non-returning, and Arhatship, while others realized Pratyekabuddhahood or generated the supreme Bodhi mind. Each followed the teachings with joy.
The Buddha told Ānanda that since the land was purchased by Sudatta and the trees and flowers were offered by Prince Jeta, the grove should be named “Jetavana, the Grove of Prince Jeta and Anāthapiṇḍada,” to be passed down to future generations. Ānanda and the fourfold assembly respectfully upheld the Buddha’s instruction.
