长者无耳目舌缘
佛陀时代,舍卫国诞生了一个长相奇怪的男婴,没有眼睛、耳朵的他,虽有嘴巴却没有舌头,虽没有四肢,却有男根。因此,他的家人为他命名为“曼慈毗梨”。
曼慈毗梨出生前,父亲便往生了,家里除了他之外,还有五个聪明美丽的姐姐。依照舍卫国的法津规定,家产只有男丁可以继承。因此,曼慈毗梨一出生便继承了父亲庞大的遗产。
邻近的长者听到曼慈毗梨的事觉得很奇怪:“一个人无眼耳舌及手足,但一出生就能继承庞大的家产,这当中必有特殊的因缘。”于是这位长者就和曼慈毗梨的姐姐到祇树给孤独园请示佛陀。佛即为大众开示:
过去有二位大长者兄弟,哥哥叫檀若世质,弟弟为尸罗世质。哥哥从小就忠信诚实,心地十分仁厚,常常救济贫苦无依的人,全国都知道他的美名。国王因为他的德行,命他为大法官。当时的国家法律,借贷不用借据,而是要到法官面前,请法官作证。长久以来,所有的案件,檀若世质都评判得非常公正。
弟弟尸罗世质到老年,才有一个儿子。一天,他带着小儿子来找檀若世质,他说:“哥哥!前几天,我借了许多钱给一个商人,帮助他入海采宝,如果他得宝而返,理当还我钱。但我年纪大了,担心哪天往生了,无法索讨这笔钱,所以今天特来请你作证,记得要让那位商人将钱还给我的小儿子。”
没多久,尸罗世质过世了。入海采宝的商人因遇到船难,一无所得地回来,小儿子看到他落魄的样子,不忍心向他要钱。后来,商人再度入海采宝,这次是满载宝物而归,一下子变成了富翁。他为了保住自己的财产,想了一个逃债的诡计。
首先,他拿了一个价值十万的宝珠到法官家找法官夫人,告诉她说:“如果你能帮我说服檀若世质,请他证明没有借钱一事,我就把宝珠送给你。”檀若世质听到妻子的传话,一口便回绝了。第二天,商人知道事情没有成功,又带了一个更美、价值二十万的宝珠诱惑法官夫人:“事成之后,你不仅可以拿到宝珠,我再给你三十万金。您算一算,如果我这些钱全部还给你的侄儿,你一毛钱也拿不到。”
到了晚上,檀若世质回家了,夫人因为贪爱宝珠,又再度向他要求。檀若世质说:“我因为公正信用,才能担任法官,一旦作了伪证,现世不被世人所信,死后还要受无量劫的苦呢!”夫人见他不愿意,便哭着说:“我和你夫妻一场,连这点小事你都做不到,我干脆死了算了。你如果不从,我就先杀了儿子再自杀!”檀若世质非常疼爱他唯一的儿子,听到妻子的要胁,好像有东西哽在喉咙里,吞不下去也吐不出来,左右为难。他想:“如果孩子死了,我的财产将由谁来继承呢?但若说了妄语,又会被世人唾弃,来世还要受无量之苦……”挣扎了许久,为了心爱的妻儿与财产,檀若世质妥协了。
商人得知计谋成功,便穿着华丽的衣服,骑着装饰宝物的大象进到城里。尸罗世质的小儿子看到,便去找商人还钱,想不到商人竟厚着脸皮说:“我没有欠你钱啊!有人可以证明吗?如果有人证明,我一定还。”于是小儿子就拉着商人去找伯父讨公道。小儿子告诉法官伯父:“我父亲之前借钱给商人时,有伯父您亲自作证!”想不到,法官檀若世质竟说:“我完全不知道有这件事。”
尸罗世质的小儿子满怀委屈,对于伯父的背信忘义耿耿于怀。
故事说到这里,佛陀告诉大众:“你们知道当时的法官是谁吗?即是今日无耳无目浑沌无知的曼慈毗梨。由于当时打妄语,故堕大地狱,受尽痛苦;结束地狱之苦后,亦于五百世中,受此残缺之身的果报。但也因为他喜好布施,得生富豪之家为财主。善恶业报,虽久不败,你们要常行精进,收摄身口意,不要任意造恶啊!”

The Karmic Cause of the Elder Born Without Ears, Eyes, and Tongue
During the time of the Buddha, in Śrāvastī, a boy of strange appearance was born. He had no eyes or ears; though he had a mouth, he had no tongue; though he lacked limbs, he possessed male organs. Therefore, his family named him “Mañciviri.”
Before his birth, his father had already passed away. Besides him, there were five intelligent and beautiful elder sisters in the family. According to the laws of Śrāvastī, only male heirs could inherit property. Thus, upon his birth, Mañciviri inherited his father’s vast estate.
A nearby elder, hearing of this, found it strange: “A person without eyes, ears, tongue, hands, or feet inherits great wealth at birth—there must be a special cause.” He went with the sisters to Jetavana to ask the Buddha, who then taught:
In the past, there were two wealthy brothers. The elder, Danyashizhi, was honest and benevolent, known throughout the land for helping the poor. The king appointed him chief judge. At that time, loans required no written contract but were witnessed by the judge. He judged all cases with great fairness.
The younger brother, Shiluoshizhi, had a son in old age. He once asked the elder brother to witness a loan given to a merchant, so that repayment would go to his son.
After his death, the merchant returned empty-handed from a failed voyage, and the son did not press him. Later, the merchant succeeded and became wealthy, but devised a scheme to avoid repayment.
He bribed the judge’s wife with jewels, asking her to persuade her husband to deny the loan. Though initially refusing, the judge eventually yielded under pressure and threats from his wife, out of attachment to family and wealth.
When the merchant denied the debt, the son sought justice, but the judge falsely claimed ignorance. The son was filled with grievance.
The Buddha said: “That judge is now Mañciviri. Because of false speech, he fell into great hells and, after that, for five hundred lives received a deformed body. Yet due to generosity, he was reborn into wealth. The results of good and evil karma never fail. Therefore, practice diligently, restrain body, speech, and mind, and do not commit evil.”
