The Past Karmic Cause of the Buddha’s Back Pain
One day, the Buddha, together with five hundred great bhikṣus, arrived at the shore of Lake Anavatapta. Except for Ānanda, all were great arhats endowed with the six supernatural powers. At that time, the Buddha said to Śāriputra: “Long ago, there was a country named Rājagṛha, where a grand festival was being held. Among the assembled crowd were two strongmen: one born into the kṣatriya royal caste, and the other into the brāhmaṇa caste. Both entered a wrestling match held that day. Before the match, the brāhmaṇa strongman privately said to the kṣatriya strongman, ‘If you deliberately lose and let me win, I will share most of the reward with you.’ The kṣatriya agreed. However, after receiving the king’s reward, the brāhmaṇa broke his promise and did not share the wealth.”
“Not long after, during another festival, the brāhmaṇa made the same request and again received the kṣatriya’s consent, yet once more failed to fulfill his promise. At the third match, the brāhmaṇa said, ‘If you let me win again, I will repay all that I owe from before.’ The kṣatriya believed him but was deceived again. Later, at yet another festival, the two met again. The brāhmaṇa repeated his request. The kṣatriya thought, ‘This man is dishonest and has taken what belongs to me. Today I will teach him a lesson.’ He said, ‘You have deceived me three times. I do not care for your wealth.’ In front of the crowd, he seized the brāhmaṇa by the neck with his right hand and grasped his waist with his left, snapping his spine like breaking sugarcane. He then lifted him, spun him three times, and hurled him to the ground, killing him instantly. The king and ministers who witnessed this were greatly impressed and rewarded him with one hundred thousand gold coins.”
The Buddha told Śāriputra: “The brāhmaṇa strongman at that time was Devadatta, and the kṣatriya strongman was myself. Because of anger and greed for wealth, I took his life. For thousands of years thereafter, I fell into hell and suffered the torment of burning and boiling. Though I have now become a Buddha and have exhausted all afflictions, due to this karmic retribution, I still experience pain in my back.” The Buddha further admonished the assembly: “Even the Tathāgata, who has eliminated all evils and perfected all virtues, and who liberates devas, nāgas, spirits, kings, ministers, and all beings, still must experience residual karmic effects. How much more so for ignorant beings of the world. You should take this as a warning and carefully guard the three karmas of body, speech, and mind. Abandon killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. Do not engage in false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, or frivolous speech. Do not give rise to jealousy, anger, or disbelief in cause and effect.” The Venerable Śāriputra, the five hundred arhats, and the devas, nāgas, and spirits all rejoiced upon hearing this teaching and faithfully practiced accordingly.
