礼敬佛塔
从前，一位名叫真檀迦腻吒的国王，讨平东天竺后，不仅声威显赫，亦从中获得许多财宝。军队于回国途中，在一平坦宽阔的地方扎营休息。
此时，国王心中非常渴望着佛法的滋润，见到远处有一座像佛塔的建筑，便立刻带着千名侍从前往。一行人快要接近塔庙时，国王即下马步行，并且戴上珍贵的宝冠，以恭敬虔诚之心礼拜佛塔。国王赞叹地说：
「离欲诸结障，具足一切智，
于诸仙圣中，最上无伦疋。
能为诸众生，作不请亲友，
名称世普闻，三界所尊重。
弃舍于三有，如来所说法，
诸论中最上，摧灭诸邪论。
我今归命礼，真实阿罗汉。」
但是，就在国王顶礼的当下，佛塔突然碎裂毁坏，像是被暴风侵袭了一样。国王看了大为惊怖，心想：「没人靠近碰触佛塔，佛塔为何会突然崩坏？这当中必然有其因缘。」于是说了一首偈子：
「帝释长寿天，如是尊重者，
合掌礼佛塔，都无有异相。
十力大威德，尊重高胜人，
大梵来敬礼，佛亦无异相。
我身轻于彼，不应以我坏，
为是咒术力，厌道之所作。」
国王说完偈子，对于佛塔的毁坏仍余悸犹存，表示：「这个景象我未曾见过，希望不是灾难的征兆，而是吉祥的象征，能令众生皆得安稳。我从过去到现在礼拜过上千座佛塔，未曾损其一沙一尘，到底是什么原因造成今日如此的结果？」于是感叹地说：
「为天阿修罗，而共大战斗，
为是国欲坏，我命将不尽。
将非有怨敌，欲毁于我国，
非谷贵刀兵，不有疾疫耶？
非一切世间，欲有灾患耶？
此极是恶相，将非法欲灭。」
这时，住在塔庙附近的居民见到国王如此惊怖，便禀告国王：「这是外道所建造的塔，而非佛塔。由于这座塔的福德浅薄，又没有供奉舍利，所以不堪您将它当成佛塔来礼拜，因此才会崩坏。」
国王听了非常欢喜，对佛法的信心更胜以往，感动落泪地说：「我将外道所建的塔，当成佛塔来礼拜，这座塔肯定会崩坏的！佛陀是三界导师，最尊、最贵，而佛所说的话更是真实不虚，胜过一切世间邪说，如今即得到了印证。」

Paying Respect to a Stūpa
In the past, there was a king named Zhen Tanjiani Zha. After subduing eastern India, he became renowned for his power and also acquired vast treasures. On the return journey, the army encamped in a broad, level plain to rest.
At that time, the king deeply longed for the nourishment of the Dharma. Seeing a structure in the distance resembling a stūpa, he immediately went there with a thousand attendants. As they approached the stūpa, the king dismounted and walked on foot, placing upon his head a precious jeweled crown, and reverently worshipped the stūpa with a sincere heart. He praised it, saying:
“Free from desire and all bonds and obstructions,
Endowed with complete wisdom.
Among all sages and saints,
Supreme and without equal.
Able to act as an uninvited friend
To all sentient beings,
Whose name is widely heard in the world,
Revered throughout the three realms.
Having abandoned the three existences,
The Dharma spoken by the Tathāgata
Is supreme among all doctrines,
Destroying all heterodox views.
I now take refuge and pay homage
To the true Arhat.”
However, at the very moment the king bowed in reverence, the stūpa suddenly shattered and collapsed, as if struck by a violent storm. The king was greatly terrified and thought, “No one has approached or touched the stūpa, so why has it suddenly collapsed? There must be a karmic cause.” He then spoke a verse:
“Śakra and the long-lived heavenly beings,
Even they respectfully join their palms before a stūpa,
Without any such strange phenomena.
The great powerful ones of the Ten Powers,
Even Brahmā himself pays homage,
And yet there is no such anomaly.
My body is lighter than theirs,
It should not be that I caused this destruction.
Perhaps it is the power of spells,
Or some hostile magic at work.”
After speaking, the king remained uneasy about the collapse of the stūpa, saying, “I have never seen such an event before. I hope this is not a sign of disaster, but rather an auspicious omen bringing peace to all beings. From the past until now, I have worshipped thousands of stūpas without damaging even a single grain of dust—what is the reason for this occurrence today?” He then lamented:
“Is it that devas and asuras
Are engaged in great warfare?
Is my kingdom about to be destroyed?
Is my life nearing its end?
Or are there hostile enemies
Seeking to ruin my land?
Is it famine, war, or weapons,
Or will there be epidemics?
Or is it that the whole world
Is about to fall into calamity?
This is surely an evil sign—
Perhaps it indicates the decline of the Dharma.”
At that time, the residents near the stūpa informed the king, saying, “This is a stūpa built by non-Buddhists, not a Buddhist stūpa. Because its merit is shallow and no relics are enshrined within it, it could not bear being treated as a Buddha stūpa for worship, and thus it collapsed.”
Upon hearing this, the king rejoiced greatly. His faith in the Buddha-Dharma became even stronger, and he said with tears of emotion: “I mistakenly took a non-Buddhist stūpa to be a Buddha stūpa and worshipped it as such; it is only natural that it would collapse. The Buddha is the teacher of the three realms, most honored and supreme, and what the Buddha teaches is truly and unfailingly real, far beyond all worldly false doctrines. Today I have witnessed this confirmation myself.”
