受持三皈五戒得生天
昔日，舍卫国有一位长者名弗奢。弗奢长者有两个女儿，其中一个女儿出家修行，精进用功，证得阿罗汉果；另一个女儿有邪见，不信佛法，甚至毁谤佛法。
一天，弗奢长者对不信佛法的女儿说：「如果妳能皈依佛，我就给妳一千枚金钱；如果妳能皈依法、皈依僧，并受持五戒，我就再给妳八千枚金钱。」听闻父亲所言，原本不信佛的女儿于是皈依三宝，并受持五戒。不久后此女命终，投生天界，成为天女。天女随即来到佛所，佛为其说法，天女闻法即证得须陀洹果。
见此情景，有比丘问佛：「这位天女是以何因缘而得投生天界？」
佛言：「此女前世投生人间，起初是为了得到父亲的钱而归依三宝、受持五戒。但也因为归依三宝、受持五戒的因缘，命终后得以投生天界。如今再来到佛所，因闻法而得证道果。」

By Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels and Upholding the Five Precepts, One Is Reborn in the Heavenly Realm
Long ago, in the kingdom of Śrāvastī, there was an elder named Fuśe. Elder Fuśe had two daughters. One of them left the household life to cultivate the Way; she practiced with diligence and vigor, and eventually attained the fruit of Arhatship. The other daughter held wrong views: she did not believe in the Buddha-Dharma and even went so far as to slander it.
One day, Elder Fuśe said to his unbelieving daughter, “If you can take refuge in the Buddha, I will give you one thousand gold coins. If you can furthermore take refuge in the Dharma and the Saṅgha, and receive and uphold the Five Precepts, I will give you another eight thousand gold coins.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, the daughter, who had originally had no faith in Buddhism, then took refuge in the Three Jewels and received and upheld the Five Precepts. Not long afterward, she passed away and was reborn in the heavenly realm as a heavenly maiden. She immediately came before the Buddha, and the Buddha expounded the Dharma for her. Upon hearing the Dharma, the heavenly maiden at once attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
Seeing this, a bhikṣu asked the Buddha, “By what causes and conditions was this heavenly maiden able to be reborn in the heavenly realm?”
The Buddha said, “In her previous life in the human world, this woman at first took refuge in the Three Jewels and upheld the Five Precepts in order to obtain her father’s money. Yet precisely because of the causes and conditions created by taking refuge in the Three Jewels and upholding the Five Precepts, after her death she was able to be reborn in the heavenly realm. Now, having come again before the Buddha, she has attained the fruit of the Path through hearing the Dharma.”
