过去，有一位比丘，行脚游化至他国。
因为当天夜已晚，比丘无法入城，便在城外的草地上席地而坐。
到了半夜，一夜叉鬼出现，抓住比丘说：「我要吃了你。」
比丘不疾不徐地说道：「我们之间相离很远。」
夜叉鬼不解，问：「为什么相离很远？」
比丘说道：「你若杀害我，我死后会生到忉利天，而你则会堕入地狱中受报，难道我们之间的距离不远吗？」
夜叉鬼听了，随即放开比丘，向比丘忏悔，顶礼后离去。

The Vast Distance Between the Retributions of Good and Evil
In the past, there was a bhikkhu who was traveling from place to place to teach the Dharma and eventually arrived in a foreign land.
As it was already late at night and he could no longer enter the city, the bhikkhu sat down on the grass outside the city.
At midnight, a yaksha appeared, seized the bhikkhu, and said, “I am going to eat you.”
The bhikkhu replied calmly and unhurriedly, “The distance between us is very great.”
The yaksha, puzzled, asked, “Why do you say that the distance between us is very great?”
The bhikkhu said, “If you kill me, after my death I will be reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, whereas you will fall into hell to undergo retribution. Is not the distance between us therefore very great?”
Upon hearing this, the yaksha immediately released the bhikkhu, repented before him, bowed in reverence, and then departed.
