The Karmic Story of Bhikṣu Ratnahasta
In the time of the Buddha, in the city of Śrāvastī, the wife of a great and wealthy elder gave birth to a son. The child’s appearance was upright and wondrous, rare in the world. Even more astonishing, at birth he held a gold coin in each hand; even when the coins were taken away, new ones would naturally appear. The elder couple was overjoyed and invited a physiognomist to examine the child. Seeing the child’s dignified and extraordinary features, the physiognomist praised him and asked about auspicious signs at birth. The parents replied, “He holds gold coins in his hands, and they appear endlessly.” Thus, he was named “Ratnahasta” (Treasure-Hand).
As Ratnahasta grew, his nature was gentle and virtuous, endowed with compassion. He was filial to his parents and delighted in giving. Whenever beggars asked, he freely gave away the gold coins in his hands without reluctance. One day, while traveling outside the city with relatives and friends, he arrived at Jetavana. Upon seeing the Buddha, whose radiant compassion shone like the sun in darkness, he was filled with joy. He immediately bowed and respectfully requested that the Buddha and the great bhikṣus accept his offering. At that time, Venerable Ānanda kindly said to him, “Child, offering a meal to the Buddha and the monks requires wealth—do you understand?”
Hearing this, Ratnahasta stretched out his hands, and coins poured down like rain. The Buddha then instructed Ānanda to use these offerings to prepare the meal. Ānanda followed the instruction and prepared various foods to offer to the Buddha and the Saṅgha. After the offering, the Buddha taught profound Dharma. Ratnahasta’s mind opened, and he immediately attained the fruit of Stream-entry, giving rise to the aspiration for monastic life.
Being filial, Ratnahasta returned home and expressed his wish to renounce the household life. His loving parents, unwilling to disappoint him, brought him to the monastery to request ordination. The compassionate Buddha said, “Come, bhikṣu.” Instantly, his hair fell away, and he donned the Dharma robe. He diligently cultivated and soon attained arhatship, becoming revered by gods and humans.
Seeing such extraordinary results, Venerable Ānanda and the bhikṣus asked the Buddha, “World-Honored One, what past merit enabled Bhikṣu Ratnahasta to be born into a wealthy family, to have inexhaustible gold in his hands, and to attain the path?” The Buddha compassionately explained the causes and conditions.
In the past, during the time of Buddha Kāśyapa, when his teaching had been completed and he entered nirvāṇa, King Kāśi of Vārāṇasī collected his relics and built a jeweled stūpa in offering. At that time, an elder, seeing the construction of the stūpa gate, rejoiced and placed his only gold coin beneath the hinge, making a sincere vow to uphold the Dharma, then departed.
The Buddha told Ānanda and the assembly, “Due to that elder’s sincere and joyful offering, he was never reborn in lower realms, and in heaven and among humans, gold constantly appeared in his hands. In this life, he has inexhaustible wealth and has followed me to renounce and attain the path. This is the past cause of Bhikṣu Ratnahasta.” Hearing the Buddha’s teaching, Ānanda and the bhikṣus faithfully upheld it and rejoiced in practice.
