King Udayana and the Maiden Jixing

During the time of the Buddha, the kingdom of Kauśāmbī in India was ruled by King Udayana. His queen possessed noble character and was kind and generous in her conduct. The king held her in great respect.

One day, the Buddha led his disciples to the monastery of Fine Sound in Kauśāmbī to teach the Dharma. Upon hearing this, the king led the people to listen. The Buddha expounded to the king, queen, and ministers on impermanence, the suffering of separation from what is loved, the suffering of encountering what is hated, and the law of cause and effect—good deeds bringing blessings and evil deeds leading to downfall. The assembly was filled with joy, practiced accordingly, and upheld the Five Precepts, becoming devout followers.

At that time, there was a Brahmin named Jixing who had a sixteen-year-old daughter of rare beauty. To prove her unmatched appearance, he offered a great reward to anyone who would claim she was not beautiful. No one responded, and all acknowledged her beauty. Proud, he sought a suitable match and, hearing of the Buddha’s majestic and rare marks, wished to marry his daughter to the Buddha.

He went to see the Buddha and said, “My daughter is unmatched in beauty. Few are worthy of her. Seeing your noble appearance, you are most fitting.” The Buddha replied, “Your daughter’s beauty comes from you, while my appearance is the result of the compassionate cultivation guided by Buddhas and bodhisattvas. The two are not the same. What you see as beauty is, to me, like a fine vessel filled with filth. It brings many dangers. Many familial and social harms arise from attachment to beauty. I cultivate pure conduct and avoid such dangers. You should return.”

Rejected, Jixing grew angry and brought his daughter to King Udayana, praising her beauty. The king was delighted and took her as a consort, rewarding Jixing with wealth and office.

Though beautiful, the new consort was deeply jealous and often slandered the queen. Knowing the king trusted the queen, she became resentful and devised a scheme.

One day, she urged the king to hold a banquet and invite the queen. The queen, observing fasting precepts, did not attend. After repeated summons, the king became enraged and ordered her brought in, even shooting arrows at her. The queen remained mindful of the Buddha, and all arrows returned to the king. Astonished, he asked her. She replied that it was due to her refuge in the Three Jewels and the Buddha’s protection. Realizing his error, the king sent the consort back and honored the queen even more.

After this event, the king’s faith in the Buddha deepened. He later visited the Buddha with his retinue and recounted everything. The Buddha taught that seductive behavior has many forms rooted in defilements such as jealousy and anger. He praised the king for abandoning attachment and turning to wisdom. Those who practice good accumulate merit and attain happiness. The king, queen, and all present understood and practiced with joy.
