身有栴檀香缘
佛陀时代，迦毗罗卫国有一位大富长者娶了贵族之女为妻，生下一名容貌端正、无与伦比的男婴。特别的是，男婴不仅全身毛孔散发浓郁的牛头栴檀香，口中亦出优钵罗花香，家人无不欢喜。于是长者请相师到家中为儿子占相，相师看着襁褓中的婴孩，询问：“此儿出生时，可有什么瑞相？”长者夫妇描述其子全身散发牛头栴檀香、口有优钵罗花香，于是相师为其取名为“栴檀香”。
栴檀香日渐长大，生性仁慈和睦，见者无不喜爱。一日，栴檀香与亲友外出游玩，见到坐于拘陀树下有着三十二相、八十种好、全身光明普曜的释迦牟尼佛。满心欢喜的栴檀香至诚向世尊顶礼，并退坐一旁。世尊为其演说四谛法门，栴檀香心开意解，即证须陀洹果。
栴檀香返家求得父母同意后，来到精舍，至诚恳求愿随佛出家修行。世尊应许，说道：“善来比丘，须发自落，法服着身。”栴檀香即现庄严比丘相。出家后的栴檀香毫不懈怠，精勤修道，不久便证得三明六通，具八解脱，成为诸天世人所共敬仰的四果阿罗汉。
比丘们见到栴檀香比丘如此殊胜的因缘，于是请示世尊：“不知栴檀香比丘宿植何福，出生时全身散发香味，又能生值佛世，出家得道？”佛为大众开示：“过去九十一劫前，毗婆尸佛于世间教化因缘圆满，即入涅槃。波罗奈国的?头末帝国王建造四座宝塔以供奉佛陀舍利，并令群臣、后妃及婇女持香花入塔供养。塔地因众人踩踏，而有毁损；有位长者不忍其颓败破烂，于是发心以上好泥土将地抹平，并以栴檀香散洒其上，而后发愿离去。长者因为修塔功德，于九十一劫皆不堕恶趣，生于人天之中，身口常散其香；后值佛世，得遇世尊，出家修行，证得道果。今日身散香味的栴檀香比丘，即是当时以栴檀香散洒塔地的长者。”大众听闻佛陀讲述栴檀香比丘的因缘后，皆发欢喜心，依教奉行。

The Karmic Cause of a Body Emitting Sandalwood Fragrance
During the time of the Buddha, in Kapilavastu, a wealthy elder married a noblewoman, and they gave birth to a boy of unparalleled beauty. Remarkably, from all the pores of the infant’s body emanated a strong fragrance of ox-head sandalwood, and from his mouth came the scent of blue lotus flowers. The family rejoiced. The elder invited a physiognomist to examine the child, who asked, “Were there any auspicious signs at his birth?” The parents described the fragrances, and the physiognomist named him “Sandalwood Fragrance.”
As Sandalwood Fragrance grew, he was naturally kind and gentle, loved by all who saw him. One day, while traveling with relatives, he saw Śākyamuni Buddha seated beneath a tree, endowed with the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent qualities, radiating light. Filled with joy, he bowed sincerely and sat aside. The Buddha expounded the Four Noble Truths, and he attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
After obtaining his parents’ consent, he went to the monastery and earnestly requested ordination. The Buddha accepted, saying, “Come, bhikṣu; your hair falls away, and the robe appears.” He immediately assumed the dignified form of a monk. Practicing diligently, he soon attained the three knowledges, six supernatural powers, and eight liberations, becoming an arhat revered by gods and humans.
The monks, seeing his extraordinary conditions, asked the Buddha about the cause. The Buddha said, “Ninety-one kalpas ago, after Vipaśyin Buddha entered nirvāṇa, a king built stupas for relics. A certain elder, seeing the ground damaged, repaired it with fine clay and scattered sandalwood upon it, making a vow. Through this merit, he was reborn among humans and heavens for ninety-one kalpas, always emitting fragrance. Later, encountering the Buddha, he ordained and attained the path. The present Sandalwood Fragrance bhikṣu is that very elder.” Hearing this, all rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
