The Karmic Conditions of Indra Transforming the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove
In the city of Rājagṛha lived a wealthy elder named Gusha. Though he possessed immeasurable riches, he revered heterodox teachings and did not believe in the Buddha-Dharma. At that time, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana, using his supernatural powers, observed that the elder would fall into the evil realms due to wrong views and suffer. He therefore gave rise to compassion and sought skillful means to transform him.
First, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana requested Śakra, the lord of the heavens, to transform the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove where the Buddha resided into a magnificent palace adorned with all kinds of rare treasures and splendid canopies. Around the palace hung jeweled bells, constantly producing clear and melodious sounds, and the ground was covered with beautiful celestial flowers. Within the palace were countless exquisite foods and delicacies offered to the Buddha and the Saṅgha. In addition, the nāga king Elāpatra personally held a canopy for the Buddha, while other nāga kings held canopies for the monks. On both sides of the Buddha stood celestial maidens, each holding fine fans to cool him. Moreover, innumerable guardian deities made offerings with refined music and dance.
When Elder Gusha passed by the monastery and saw such a magnificent and extraordinary scene, he was filled with admiration. Toward the Buddha, who was revered by all, he developed sincere respect and faith. He then approached the Buddha and respectfully requested him to accept an offering. The Buddha silently consented.
The elder returned home and immediately prepared fine and delicious food, awaiting the Buddha’s arrival. Soon, the Buddha led the monks to his home to receive the offering and expounded various teachings. Upon hearing the Dharma, the elder’s mind opened in understanding, and he attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
A bhikṣu, seeing the inconceivable transformations of the Bamboo Grove and the supreme offerings made by devas, humans, nāgas, and spirits with flowers, banners, food, and music, found it extremely rare and asked the Buddha, “World-Honored One, by what causes and conditions have you obtained such a magnificent result?”
The Buddha compassionately explained, “In the distant past, there was a Buddha named Pūrṇapratijña. One day, he led his disciples traveling to teach beings. When they arrived at the kingdom of Brahmā, the king led his ministers out of the city to welcome them, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, and invited him to accept offerings. After the meal, that Buddha not only taught the king but also gave him a prediction: ‘In the future, you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni, who will widely liberate beings.’ That king was myself. Because of the merit of offering to the Buddha and the Saṅgha, throughout countless lifetimes I did not fall into the evil realms, enjoyed happiness among gods and humans, and now have attained Buddhahood, still receiving offerings from gods and humans.” Upon hearing this, the monks faithfully upheld the teaching and rejoiced in its practice.
