   害人亦自害。爱欲意为田,淫怒痴为种;

Wisdom Does Not Cling to Desire

While the Buddha was teaching beings at Jetavana Monastery in Śrāvastī, there was a great wealthy elder in the city who had a son about twelve or thirteen years old. When the elder and his wife passed away, the son was still young and incapable of managing the household. Within a few years, he squandered all the family wealth and was reduced to begging. One day, a friend of his late father, also a wealthy elder, saw his destitute condition on the street. After learning the details, he felt compassion and decided to help him out of his predicament. This friend not only gave his daughter in marriage to him, but also provided carriages, servants, and great wealth, and even established a new household for him.

However, the young man was inherently lazy and unskilled in managing resources. Before long, he again exhausted all his wealth. The elder, unable to bear his daughter’s suffering, gave him more money, but the young man repeated his old habits and squandered everything once more. Seeing that repeated aid was futile, the elder decided to force his daughter to remarry. When the daughter overheard this, she informed her husband and urged him to find a solution. The young man, filled with shame and despair, thought that losing his wife would be unbearable, like death itself. He gave rise to a wicked thought: “If we must die, we will die together.” He deceived his wife into a room, killed her with a hidden knife, and then took his own life. Both died.

The servants, terrified, informed the elder, who rushed to the scene but could not reverse the tragedy. At the funeral, the family was overwhelmed with grief. Later, hearing that the Buddha was in the world teaching and relieving suffering, they went to the monastery to see him.

After bowing, the Buddha asked why they were so sorrowful. The elder explained the incident. The Buddha then taught, “Greed and anger are common afflictions of the world. Ignorance is the gateway to calamity. Because of these, beings fall into the cycles of birth and death within the three realms and five destinies without end, yet remain unaware and unrepentant. The poison of greed destroys lives and families, harming countless beings, not only this couple.” The World-Honored One then spoke a verse:

“The foolish bind themselves with greed,
Seeking not to cross to the other shore.
For the sake of wealth and desire,
   They harm others and themselves.
Desire is the field of the mind,
Lust, anger, and delusion are the seeds.
Thus those who give transcend the world,
   Gaining immeasurable blessings.
With few companions and much wealth,
   Merchants live in constant fear.
   Craving robs and destroys life—
Therefore the wise do not cling to desire.”

Upon hearing the verse, the elder’s sorrow vanished, and he was filled with Dharma joy. Together with the others present, they eradicated vast evil karma and attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
