The Cause and Conditions of Two Kings Ordaining Through the Buddha’s Teaching
During the time of the Buddha, there were two kings who were in constant conflict, frequently mobilizing armies to attack one another, bringing great suffering to their people. At that time, King Prasenajit saw that these two kings were bound by anger and trapped in the cycle of birth and death, unable to free themselves. Filled with compassion, he consulted the Buddha, hoping to resolve their enmity so they would cease harming each other. The Buddha listened and agreed to his request.
One day, knowing that both kingdoms were gathering their armies and preparing for war, the Buddha led his disciples to Vārāṇasī and, at the Deer Park, expounded the Dharma to the bhikṣus. When the battle began, one kingdom was defeated and, stricken with fear, retreated to where the Buddha was. They sincerely bowed before the Buddha, who then taught them the principle of impermanence in birth and death. Upon hearing this, the king gained insight, his mind opened, and he resolved to renounce the household life and practice under the Buddha. After ordaining, through constant and diligent effort day and night, he soon attained arhatship.
When the other king heard this news, he realized that the great threat in his heart had been removed and rejoiced greatly. He too went to the monastery, paid homage to the Buddha, and listened to the teachings. Because the Buddha’s exposition was perfect and unobstructed in eloquence, the king was filled with Dharma joy. He prepared many fine foods to offer to the Buddha and the community of monks, and before the Buddha he made vast vows, dedicating the merit of this offering to future lives, wishing that all beings might find peace, have refuge, attain liberation, and enter nirvāṇa.
The Buddha, hearing this, smiled and emitted five-colored rays of light from his mouth. The light circled the Buddha three times and then re-entered the crown of his head. Seeing this extraordinary sign, Ānanda stepped forward and asked, “World-Honored One, the Tathāgatas are dignified and do not smile without cause. For what reason does the World-Honored One smile today? I pray that you will compassionately explain.” The Buddha said, “King Jayā’s offering today will not only prevent him from falling into evil paths, but he will also enjoy many सुखs among gods and humans. After three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas, he will become a Buddha named ‘Anuttara,’ widely liberating beings beyond measure. Therefore, I rejoice.” Upon hearing this teaching, the bhikṣus practiced diligently according to the Buddha’s instruction, without weariness.
