善恶业报 如影随形

       佛陀时代,有一位力大无穷的驼骠比丘,随佛出家后,精进行道,威德具足,证得阿罗汉果。由于驼骠比丘时常发心营办僧事,关照僧众的饮食起居,佛称赞其「营事第一」。

       当时,在僧团中有一位福德浅薄的弥多比丘,几乎每次都拿到粗糙的食物,久而久之,便对驼骠比丘产生成见,认为对方是故意分给他不好的东西。

        后来,弥多比丘公然中伤驼骠比丘,并联合他已出家的姊姊,于比丘尼僧团中诽谤驼骠比丘。驼骠比丘为避免众人因毁谤罗汉而造恶业,只好选择离开,于是显现十八神变,灰身泯智,入火光三昧。

        僧团中的比丘们对于驼骠比丘何以被诽谤?何以力大无穷?何以证得阿罗汉果?均感到疑惑且好奇,请示佛陀之后,终于明白。原来迦叶佛住世时,有一位年少比丘,长得眉清目秀,相好端严。一日外出乞食,在城中遇到一名少妇,少妇见其相好庄严,心生贪恋,于是目不转睛地直盯着他瞧。

        当时的驼骠比丘是一名监督膳食制作的官员,看见这位少妇紧跟着年少比丘,于是不明就里到处传言:「年少比丘和少妇私通!」因为造作不实的诽谤,以此因缘堕落三恶道中受苦。又因过去在迦叶佛时出家学道,所以今生得证阿罗汉果。在其出家修行的期间,于僧团中料理僧事,某次极力挽救陷于深泥中、驮着米面的驴,以此缘故得力大无穷之果报。

Good and evil karmic retribution follows one like a shadow

        In the time of the Buddha, there was a bhikṣu named Tuopiao who possessed extraordinary physical strength. After renouncing the household life and following the Buddha, he practiced the Path with great diligence, perfected moral authority and spiritual power, and attained the fruition of Arhatship.

        Because Bhikṣu Tuopiao frequently took the initiative in organizing and managing communal affairs of the Saṅgha, caring for the monks’ food, clothing, and daily needs, the Buddha praised him as “foremost in attending to communal duties.”

        At that time, within the Saṅgha there was another monk named Mituo, whose store of merit was shallow. Almost every time, he received coarse and inferior food. Over time, he developed resentment toward Bhikṣu Tuopiao, believing that Tuopiao deliberately allotted him poor provisions.

        Eventually, Bhikṣu Mituo openly slandered Bhikṣu Tuopiao and even colluded with his own sister, who had already ordained as a bhikṣuṇī, to defame Bhikṣu Tuopiao within the community of nuns.

        In order to prevent others from committing grave karmic offenses by maligning an Arhat, Bhikṣu Tuopiao chose to depart. He then manifested the eighteen supernormal transformations, reduced his body to ashes and extinguished consciousness, and entered the Fire-Radiance Samādhi.

        The monks of the Saṅgha were puzzled and curious as to why Bhikṣu Tuopiao had been slandered, why he possessed such immense strength, and how he had attained Arhatship. After asking the Buddha, they finally understood. It turned out that during the time when Buddha Kāśyapa was in the world, there was a young bhikṣu who was handsome, with clear features and dignified marks.

        One day, while going out on almsround in the city, he encountered a young married woman. Seeing his dignified appearance, she gave rise to lustful attachment and stared at him without blinking.

        At that time, the one who would later be Bhikṣu Tuopiao was serving as an official supervising the preparation of food. Seeing the woman closely following the young bhikṣu, and without understanding the situation, he spread rumors everywhere, saying, “The young bhikṣu is having an illicit affair with a married woman!”

        Because he fabricated and propagated false slander, he fell into the three lower realms and suffered as a result of this karmic cause. Yet because in that past life he had ordained and cultivated the Path under Buddha Kāśyapa, in this present life he was able to attain Arhatship.

        Moreover, during his period of monastic practice, he attended to communal affairs within the Saṅgha; on one occasion, he exerted himself to rescue a donkey laden with rice and flour that had become stuck in deep mud. By virtue of this karmic condition, he obtained the retribution of extraordinary physical strength.
