月上女供佛获福化众因缘(一)
昔日,世尊在毘耶离国树林中的精舍弘化,城中的国王、文武百官大臣们、大富长者、婆罗门、百姓、远来贸易的商客,都来恭敬地供养世尊。
当时,城中有位刹帝利种的贵族,名叫毘摩罗诘,家里非常富有,财产丰厚,仓库丰盈,无法计数,还养了各种家禽。毘摩罗诘的妻子名叫无垢,端正可喜,形貌殊美,怀孕九个月时,便生了一个女儿,姿容端丽,身体饱满,令人喜爱,而且出生时,身放光明,遍照家里,大地震动,家门外所有的树木,都自然流出酥油;城中一切大、小鼓不奏自鸣,美妙的乐声上彻虚空,天雨众宝花,屋内四个角落,有各种宝物从地涌出。此女一出生,不曾啼哭,却合掌说偈:
「由昔不造诸恶业,今得如是清净身;若当造作恶业者,不生在此大豪贵。
故由昔断诸恶行,好施调顺不放逸;恭敬严重所尊故,方得生此贤善家。
我念往昔迦叶佛,乞食来入毘耶离;我在楼上见彼尊,如是见已心清净。
我心既得清净已,供养尊重彼如来;尔时现在无香华,涂香末香饮食等。
遂即闻于空中声,佛于世间不求报;慈愍一切诸众生,是故游行来乞食。
汝欲供养彼尊者,当发无上菩提心;比于三界设供养,不如信发道心者。
我闻如是空声已,复见诸佛微妙相;遂发不动菩提心,从于楼上坠身下。
住空高一多罗树,复见十方一切佛;犹如杂宝须弥山,迦叶佛身亦复尔。
是时诸佛神力故,曼陀罗花满我手;我时散于迦叶上,即成清净妙花盖。
所见十方诸佛者,微妙相好庄严身;我见曼陀罗华盖,亦复同如迦叶上。
我时空中说是语,愿作两足最胜尊;修行乃至尘数劫,不获菩提誓不退。
天龙乃至非人等,八部其数有二千;闻我如是师子吼,亦发无上菩提意。
我舍三十三天已,还来生于阎浮提;恒常不失贤善行,故劝汝等修福业。
我在三十三天时,供养释迦牟尼佛;今生不为五欲故,唯还供养此如来。
我念宿世诸业报,凡经八十九处生;所受福德皆如今,智者宜应供养佛。」
此女说完偈后默然,因为往昔所造诸善根业报的因缘,有天上的宝衣披着身体,身上放出胜于月光的微妙光明,照耀家里。她的父母见此妙光,即为她取名「月上」。
月上女出生不久后,身体长大如八岁童女,行住坐卧之处,地上悉皆光明晃耀,全身的毛孔都散发出栴檀香味,口气清香犹如优鉢罗花。毘耶离城内所有王公贵族、诸大臣、长者、婆罗门等,及所有富豪大家、豪姓种族的男子们,听闻月上女的名声,身相端正可喜,举世无双,人人都希望娶得月上女为妻。于是这些年轻人纷纷来到毘摩罗诘的家,希望能与月上女相见,个个允诺要赠予无量的珍宝、骆驼、驴子、大象、马匹等种种财物。有的见到毘摩罗诘,即威胁恫吓:「我要抢夺你的女儿。」有的则狂言:「如果今天你不把女儿给我,我就要抢劫你家的床褥卧具、财物衣裳、珠宝璎珞,一切财货都将夺走。」有的说要鞭打他,或说要捆绑他,告诉他如此种种恐怖之事。
毘摩罗诘听后,心生恐惧害怕,全身毛发悚然,忧愁不乐,心想:「他们有的要以武力抢夺我女儿,有的想要来夺取我的性命。」他为此心思散乱,烦闷懊恼,愁眉不展,满脸忧伤,目不转睛地望着爱女,随即嚎啕大哭,泪如雨下。
月上女看见父亲这么忧伤哭泣,就问他:「父亲为何如此懊恼啼哭?」毘摩罗诘回答:「你知道吗?为了你,城内所有的人民都与我结怨仇,个个都想要来争夺你。我担心你被他们以武力抢去,也担忧我的性命受到威胁及所有的财宝被抢夺。」月上女就以偈颂安慰父亲:
「假使阎浮大地内,所有一切诸众生,悉各力如那罗延,人人手执利刀仗,
尽其身力趁逐我,彼终不能害得我;怨心毒杖所不害,水火亦复不漂然,
不畏死尸诸鬼使,及以呪诅言说者;慈心决定无瞠恨,慈心毕竟不畏他。
我今起此慈心念,护世犹如护身已;现亦不与他人苦,是故谁当能害我?
厌欲自无有欲想,成慈亦无恚怒痴;我无欲瞠及痴患,是故无能害我者。
我观一切诸众生,皆悉犹如父母想;世间但有此慈者,他人决定不能欺。
假使虚空没于地,及以须弥入芥子;四大海水处牛迹,亦复无能降我身。」
月上女说偈后,向父母亲说:「希望您们在毘耶离城东、西、南、北四面的街衢摇振铃铎,告知城内所有的人:『从今天起,七日后我的女儿月上会外出,自己选择夫婿。所有尙未婚娶的男子,要好好地用璎珞、华服庄饰自己,并且清洁城内所有的街巷,遍洒香华,备妥各种烧香、末香及华鬘,高竪宝幢,悬挂幡盖』恳请父母亲为我做这件事情。」月上女的父母听完,就按照她的话,到外面响振铃铎,遍告城内所有的人:「我女儿月上,从今日起七天后,将从家里出来,自己选择夫婿。你们应当各自努力庄严服饰、打扫街道,散布香华,准备各种烧香、末香,竪立宝幢及诸幡盖,做好种种的严饰。」
城内所有的人听闻这则消息,都心生欢喜,个个严饰自己的家里以及街巷。所有贵族、大臣、婆罗门、长者乃至工艺巧匠,所有的未婚男子都沐浴清净,并涂上各种妙香,严饰衣服及戴上各种璎珞宝饰,如此慎重其事,然后告诉左右眷属:「你们要注意,月上女如果不走向我这边,你们一定要全力帮助我把她抢夺过来。」(待续)

The Karmic Causes of Blessings and Conversion through the Offering of the Maiden Moonlight (Part I)
In the past, when the World-Honored One was teaching in a monastery within a forest in Vaiśālī, the king of the city, civil and military officials, wealthy elders, Brahmins, common people, and merchants from afar all came respectfully to make offerings to the Buddha.
At that time, there was a noble kṣatriya named Vimalakīrti who was extremely wealthy, possessing immeasurable riches and abundant granaries, and he kept various livestock. His wife, named Stainless, was graceful and beautiful. When she had been pregnant for nine months, she gave birth to a daughter of extraordinary beauty and fullness of form. At the moment of her birth, her body emitted radiant light that illuminated the entire house, the earth trembled, trees outside the gate naturally exuded ghee, drums in the city sounded without being struck, celestial music filled the sky, flowers rained down from the heavens, and treasures sprang forth from the four corners of the house. The child did not cry but joined her palms and spoke verses:
“Because in the past I did not commit evil deeds, I now obtain such a pure body;
Had I created evil actions, I would not be born in such a great and noble household.
Thus, because I abandoned evil and practiced generosity and discipline,
And respectfully honored the worthy, I am now born in this virtuous family.
I recall in the past, when Kāśyapa Buddha came to Vaiśālī for alms,
I saw him from an upper floor, and my mind became pure.
Having purified my mind, I made offerings to that Tathāgata,
Though at that time there were no incense, flowers, or offerings.
I then heard a voice in the sky:
‘The Buddha does not seek reward in the world, but out of compassion wanders for alms.
If you wish to make offerings, you should arouse the unsurpassed bodhi-mind;
Even offerings throughout the three realms are not equal to faith in the path.’
Hearing this, I again beheld the wondrous forms of the Buddhas
And gave rise to an unshakable bodhi-mind, leaping down from the tower.
Suspended in space as high as a palm tree, I saw Buddhas in all ten directions,
Like Mount Sumeru adorned with jewels, so too was Kāśyapa Buddha’s body.
By the Buddha’s power, mandāra flowers filled my hands,
Which I scattered above Kāśyapa, forming a pure canopy of flowers.
All Buddhas I saw were adorned with wondrous marks,
And the flower canopy appeared equally above them.
Then I declared: ‘I vow to become the supreme among beings;
Even over countless eons, I will not retreat until enlightenment is attained.’
Devas, nāgas, and beings of the eight classes, numbering two thousand,
Hearing my lion’s roar, also aroused the bodhi-mind.
Leaving the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, I was reborn in Jambudvīpa,
Never abandoning virtuous conduct, thus I urge all to cultivate merit.
When in that heaven, I made offerings to Śākyamuni Buddha;
In this life, I do not seek sensual pleasures but only offer to the Tathāgata.
Reflecting on past karmic results, I have been reborn in eighty-nine places;
All blessings I now enjoy arise thus; the wise should make offerings to the Buddha.”
After speaking these verses, the girl fell silent. Due to the merit accumulated in past lives, celestial garments adorned her body, and she emitted a wondrous light surpassing the brightness of the moon, illuminating the house. Seeing this, her parents named her “Moonlight.”
Soon after her birth, her body grew to that of an eight-year-old child. Wherever she walked, stood, sat, or lay, the ground shone with radiance. Fragrance of sandalwood emanated from every pore, and her breath was as pure as the lotus. All nobles, ministers, Brahmins, and wealthy families in Vaiśālī, hearing of her unmatched beauty, wished to marry her. Many young men came to Vimalakīrti’s house, offering countless treasures, camels, donkeys, elephants, and horses. Some threatened to seize her by force, others declared they would plunder all his wealth, while others spoke of beating or binding him.
Hearing this, Vimalakīrti was filled with fear and sorrow, his mind disturbed and distressed, gazing at his beloved daughter and weeping bitterly.
Seeing her father’s distress, Moonlight asked the reason. He replied that all the people desired her and might seize her by force or threaten his life and wealth. She comforted him with verses:
“Even if all beings in Jambudvīpa possessed the strength of Nārāyaṇa,
And pursued me with weapons, they could not harm me.
Hatred and poison cannot injure me, nor can water or fire;
I do not fear spirits, curses, or threats.
With a mind of loving-kindness free from anger, I fear no one.
With this mind, protecting the world as myself,
Since I do not harm others, who can harm me?
Free from desire, anger, and delusion,
None can harm me.
I regard all beings as my parents;
With such compassion, none can deceive me.
Even if space collapsed into earth, or Mount Sumeru entered a mustard seed,
Or oceans shrank to a hoofprint, none could subdue me.”
After speaking, she asked her parents to announce throughout the city that in seven days she would choose her own husband, and instructed preparations of decorations, fragrances, and offerings. Her parents followed her instructions and proclaimed the message.
All the people of the city rejoiced and adorned their homes and streets. All unmarried men bathed, perfumed themselves, dressed in fine garments, and adorned themselves with ornaments, each resolving that if she did not come to him, he would seize her by force. (To be continued)
