The Relationship Between Sound, Visuals, and Awareness

In experience, sound and visual images are often taken as external objects, while awareness is assumed to be an internal observer. In fact, sound, visuals, and awareness are not separate; they arise together within a single structure of experience. Sound is heard and visuals are seen only through awareness. Without awareness, no object can appear. The point of practice is not to eliminate sound or visuals, but to see clearly how they arise, change, and pass within awareness.

1. Clarifying the Basic Relationship

1.Sound and visuals are contents of awareness
They are appearances within experience and do not exist independently.

2.Awareness is the condition for appearance
Without awareness, there is no hearing or seeing.

3.They arise simultaneously
When sound or visuals appear, awareness is already present with them.

2. Common Misunderstandings

1.Treating awareness as an observer entity
Assuming a fixed “self” inside that watches experience.

2.Taking sound and visuals as external objects
Overlooking their status as perceived phenomena.

3.Separating awareness and objects
Creating a false division between inner awareness and outer content.

3. How They Actually Appear in Observation

1.Sound is just sound
Without interpretation, it is direct vibration, not “something’s sound.”

2.Visuals are just visuals
They are patterns of light and form, not fixed entities.

3.Awareness has no form
It cannot be seen or heard, yet all seeing and hearing depend on it.

4. Dynamic Characteristics of the Relationship

1.Co-arising
The moment sound appears is the moment it is known.

2.Continuous change
Sound and visuals shift constantly while awareness accommodates them.

3.Co-ceasing
When an object disappears, awareness of that object ceases as well.

5. Shift in Observation

1.From content to process
Not what is heard or seen, but how hearing and seeing occur.

2.From interpretation to direct experience
Reducing labeling and staying with raw perception.

3.From separation to unity
Seeing experience as a unified field rather than divided parts.

6. Key Points in Practice

1.Allow sound to be present
Do not resist it; include it in awareness.

2.Include visual changes
Light and imagery, eyes open or closed, are all objects of observation.

3.Maintain stable awareness
Do not lose clarity as sounds and visuals change.

4.Do not seek silence or clarity
Whether noisy or quiet, clear or dim, awareness remains unchanged.

7. Transformations from Clear Understanding

1.Reduced sense of disturbance
Sound is no longer experienced as interference.

2.Weakened sense of separation
The boundary between inner and outer softens.

3.Stronger presence
Direct experience becomes clearer.

4.Natural release of attachment
Grasping toward sensory objects decreases.

Conclusion

Sound, visuals, and awareness are not in opposition but are different aspects of the same moment of experience. Sound and visuals are contents; awareness is the condition. They arise together and depend on each other. Practice is not about removing objects, but about understanding their relationship. When this is seen clearly, separation weakens, attachment loosens, and awareness becomes stable and clear.
