Sitting Meditation

Non-Discriminative Awareness in Action

As meditation deepens, awareness extends beyond stillness into all forms of activity. Non-discrimination does not mean the loss of discernment, but the absence of conceptual domination and habitual judgment in direct experience. Actions continue, functions operate, but the mind no longer generates constant division and evaluation. Awareness meets each situation directly, and responses become simple, clear, and uncontrived. As discrimination weakens, action and awareness align, and a non-discriminative state naturally emerges.

1. Understanding the Nature of Non-Discrimination

1.Not the absence of functional judgment
Basic discernment for safety and decision-making remains, but without emotional fixation.

2.Freedom from rigid opposites
Good and bad, right and wrong are recognized but not solidified into conflict.

3.Direct experience over conceptualization
Perception arises without reliance on interpretation.

2. Manifestations of Discrimination in Action

1.Constant inner commentary
Continuous evaluation of actions and performance.

2.Attachment to outcomes
Focus on results weakens present awareness.

3.Reinforcement of self-centeredness
Persistent reference to “I” creates tension and division.

4.Reactivity driven by preference
Behavior guided by liking and disliking rather than clarity.

3. Conditions for Non-Discriminative Awareness

1.Continuity of awareness
Awareness remains present during action.

2.Reduction of internal effort
Less control allows natural response.

3.Equal acceptance of experience
Situations are met without bias or resistance.

4.Integration of body and mind
Movement, sensation, and awareness operate as one.

4. Practicing Non-Discrimination in Action

1.Maintain awareness during movement
Be conscious of bodily motion and environment.

2.Reduce verbal thinking
Limit internal narration and commentary.

3.Allow space before reaction
Notice the gap between stimulus and response.

4.Return to direct sensation
Shift from judgment back to sensory experience.

5. Characteristics of Non-Discriminative State

1.Simple and precise action
Direct response without excess.

2.Reduced emotional fluctuation
Feelings arise but do not dominate.

3.Less internal conflict
Behavior becomes more unified.

4.Stronger presence
Attention remains with current activity.

6. Common Deviations and Corrections

1.Misunderstanding as indifference
Non-discrimination is not emotional suppression.

2.Forcing the absence of thought
Rigid control leads to stagnation.

3.Avoiding responsibility
Decisions still occur with clarity.

4.Chasing special states
Attachment to the idea disrupts the process.

7. Transformations Brought by Non-Discrimination

1.Unity of action and awareness
Doing and knowing become inseparable.

2.Reduced mental burden
Less internal conflict leads to ease.

3.Adaptive responsiveness
Behavior adjusts naturally to conditions.

4.Clarity of experience
Reality is perceived without distortion.

Conclusion

Non-discriminative awareness in action reflects the extension of meditation into dynamic life. It is not the elimination of function, but the release of attachment; not the absence of judgment, but freedom from being bound by it. When awareness remains continuous, clear, and relaxed in action, discrimination naturally subsides, and behavior aligns directly with present conditions. True non-discrimination is not achieved by force, but revealed through sustained observation.
