The Karmic Story of King Brahmayu Giving Grain to a Brahmin
While the Buddha was teaching the Dharma at Jetavana Monastery in Śrāvastī, a bhikṣu asked, “By what causes and conditions does the Tathāgata so greatly praise the supreme merit of giving? May you compassionately explain.” The World-Honored One then began to expound to the monks.
In immeasurable ages past, there was a kingdom called Vārāṇasī. Its king, Brahmayu, governed well; the people were numerous, prosperous, and at ease, and livestock flourished. One day, a Brahmin skilled in astrology reported, “Great King, Mars has appeared, and there will be a drought for twenty years. Crops will fail, and the people will suffer hunger.” The king was deeply worried and thought, “How can I save the people?” He ordered calculations of stored grain and population. It was found that each person could receive only one sheng of grain, barely enough for six years; even the king would receive only two sheng, and many would still starve.
After some time, a Brahmin came and said, “Great King, I alone have received no grain and am near death. Please have compassion and give me some.” The king thought, “If I cannot endure a little hunger now, how can I endure greater suffering for beings in future lives?” He then gave half of his grain to the Brahmin.
Because of the king’s sincerity, the heavenly palace was shaken. Śakra, the lord of the gods, wondered if his lifespan was ending, but upon observing, he saw it was due to the king’s selfless giving. To test him, he transformed into a frail Brahmin and begged again. The king thought, “Whether I give or not, I will die. I would rather give and benefit beings without regret.” He then gave his remaining grain.
Śakra asked, “Do you give to gain rebirth as a heavenly king or worldly enjoyment?” The king replied, “I do not seek such rewards. I aspire to attain perfect enlightenment and liberate beings from suffering.” Śakra praised him and revealed his identity, instructing him to have the people prepare the fields, for rain would come in seven days. The king announced this, and on the seventh day, rain fell, crops flourished, and the people prospered again.
The Buddha told the monks, “At that time, King Brahmayu was myself. For this reason, I often praise the immeasurable merit of giving.” The monks, hearing this teaching, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
