Bhadra Meets the Buddha and Is Cured of a Grave Illness

In the past, when the Buddha was teaching the Dharma at Jetavana in Śrāvastī, there was an elder in the city named Bhadra. He was often prone to anger and frequently lost his temper, so no one liked to associate with him. However, Bhadra deeply revered and respected heterodox teachers.

Later, Bhadra fell gravely ill. No one was willing to visit him or care for his food and medicine. Lying on his bed near death, he thought, “If someone could cure my illness, I would devote the rest of my life to making offerings to him.” As he pondered, he recalled that people often praised the Buddha as the Great King of Physicians, capable of curing all afflictions and suffering. He realized that only the World-Honored One could save him, and with earnest longing, he wished to go to the monastery to see the Buddha.

The compassionate World-Honored One constantly observed all beings with his spiritual powers. When he saw those who suffered, he would go to rescue them, teach the Dharma, and relieve their afflictions. Those fallen into the three evil realms would be skillfully guided and liberated. At that time, the Buddha perceived Bhadra’s suffering and lack of care, and emitted great radiant light that illuminated his entire body. Under the Buddha’s light, Bhadra felt cool and at ease, realizing it was due to the Buddha’s compassionate blessing. Filled with joy, he bowed with sincere gratitude and vowed to take refuge in the Buddha.

Knowing that the conditions for Bhadra’s liberation had matured, the Buddha went to his house. Seeing the Buddha’s sudden arrival, Bhadra was astonished and rose from his bed to welcome him. After being seated, the Buddha asked, “Among your sufferings today, which is the most severe?” Bhadra replied, “World-Honored One, both my body and mind are in pain; I cannot rest even for a moment.” The Buddha thought, “Since countless kalpas, I have cultivated great compassion, vowing to heal the suffering of beings.” At that time, Śakra, lord of the heavens, understood the Buddha’s intention and went to a remote fragrant mountain to gather a rare white medicinal herb, which he offered to the Buddha. The Buddha gave this medicine to Bhadra, and upon taking it, all his physical and mental suffering vanished instantly. Experiencing unprecedented joy, he developed deep reverence and faith in the Buddha.

Later, Bhadra prepared exquisite food and offered it at Jetavana. After the meal, he also offered fine robes worth immense value to the Buddha and the great bhikṣus. Finally, he made a vast vow: “May the merit of this offering be dedicated to future lives. May I, like the Buddha today, heal the suffering of all beings and bring them peace and happiness.”

After making this vow, the Buddha smiled and emitted five-colored rays of light from his mouth, which circled him three times and entered through the crown of his head. At that time, Venerable Ānanda respectfully asked, “World-Honored One, the Buddhas maintain dignified composure and do not smile without cause. Why do you smile today? Please explain the reason.”

The Buddha said, “Ānanda, because Elder Bhadra, upon recovering from illness, made abundant offerings to me and the great bhikṣus, in a future life he will attain Buddhahood, also named Śākyamuni, liberating countless beings. Seeing this cause and condition, I feel great joy and thus smile.” Upon hearing this, the bhikṣus rejoiced and faithfully accepted the teaching.
