Sitting Meditation
The Mental State When Breath Dissolves
In meditation, as awareness becomes refined, effort diminishes, and the body–mind settles, the breath may shift from being clearly noticeable to extremely subtle, even barely perceptible. This “dissolution” does not mean that breathing stops, but that it no longer appears in a coarse or obvious way. The key at this stage is not to determine whether the breath is present, but whether awareness remains clear, stable, and uncontrived. The fading of the breath is often accompanied by shifts in mental state, but these are processes, not goals or achievements.
1. Basic Characteristics of Breath Dissolution
1.The breath becomes extremely subtle
Breathing shifts from clear inhalation and exhalation to very faint and gentle movement.
2.The object of attention becomes less defined
Breath is no longer a distinct focal point, but fades into a more diffuse or centerless experience.
3.Attention shifts from tracking to resting
Instead of following each breath, awareness rests in a broader field of presence.
2. Typical Changes in Mental State
1.Mental activity significantly decreases
Thinking slows down, and verbal thoughts become less frequent.
2.A sense of calm and ease increases
The body and mind feel stable, soft, and free from tension.
3.The sense of time weakens
Perception of time passing becomes less distinct, with experience feeling more continuous and present.
4.The sense of a separate observer softens
The feeling of “I am observing” diminishes, and awareness appears more self-arising.
3. Structural Changes in Awareness
1.From object-based to field-based awareness
Awareness is no longer centered on a single object, but becomes a unified field.
2.From discontinuity to continuity
Awareness becomes less interrupted and more sustained.
3.From narrow focus to open holding
Attention shifts from tight concentration to a spacious, non-forcing presence.
4. Common Misunderstandings
1.Taking absence of breath as a goal
Trying to make the breath disappear leads to tension and control.
2.Mistaking it as abnormal or dangerous
Subtle breathing is a natural development and does not require intervention.
3.Attachment to special experience
Treating this state as progress creates expectation and disturbance.
4.Confusing clarity with dullness
If awareness becomes vague or dim, it is dullness, not stability.
5. Correct Way of Observation
1.Do not search for the breath
Avoid checking whether breathing is present.
2.Maintain clarity of awareness
Ensure awareness remains bright and clear, not fading.
3.Allow the state to change naturally
Do not hold, prolong, or resist the experience.
4.Return to awareness itself
The key is not the presence or absence of breath, but the quality of awareness.
6. Significance of This Transition
1.Reduction of reliance on coarse objects
Awareness no longer depends on obvious sensory anchors.
2.Decrease in mental fabrication
Control and interference diminish.
3.Self-sustaining awareness
Awareness becomes more stable without effort.
4.Foundation for deeper insight
Supports further observation of change, impermanence, and non-fixedness.
Conclusion
The mental state during the dissolution of breath is a natural phase in the refinement of awareness. Its importance lies not in the experience itself, but in revealing that awareness is no longer dependent on coarse objects. The essential point is to remain clear, stable, and uncontrived, allowing all states to be observed as they are, without turning them into objects of attachment.
