Sitting Meditation
From Breath as Entry to Beyond the Breath
In meditation, the breath serves as the most direct and stable entry point. Through observing it, the mind returns from distraction to the present, gradually establishing awareness and stability. However, the breath is only a doorway, not the final destination. As awareness becomes more stable, attention no longer depends on a single object, and practice naturally shifts from “resting on the breath” to “direct awareness.” To go beyond the breath does not mean abandoning it, but no longer being confined by it, allowing awareness to include all that arises.
1. Using the Breath as the Foundation
1.The breath is stable and continuous
It is always present and does not need to be created.
2.The breath is easy to perceive directly
It can be clearly felt at the nostrils or through the movement of the chest and abdomen.
3.The breath gathers the mind
Resting attention on the breath reduces distraction and stabilizes awareness.
2. Building Awareness Through the Breath
1.Observe natural changes
Notice length, texture, and rhythm without control.
2.Develop sustained attention
Extend the duration of awareness and reduce distraction.
3.Balance stability and relaxation
Maintain clarity without tension or dullness.
3. Expanding Awareness Beyond the Breath
1.From local to whole-body awareness
Move from the nostrils to the entire body.
2.From single object to multiple experiences
Include sensations, sounds, thoughts, and emotions.
3.From fixed point to flowing process
Observe the unfolding of experience rather than a single location.
4. What It Means to Go Beyond the Breath
1.No longer dependent on one anchor
Awareness can stand without relying on the breath.
2.All experience becomes the object
Everything that arises is equally observed.
3.Continuous awareness remains
Awareness stays stable despite changing objects.
4.The breath becomes background
It is still present but no longer central.
5. Transitioning from Support to Independence
1.Loosen focus on the breath gradually
Allow attention to expand naturally.
2.Maintain holistic awareness
Perceive body, space, and change together.
3.Avoid deliberate switching
Expansion happens naturally, not by force.
4.Prioritize awareness over object
The focus shifts from maintaining the object to maintaining awareness.
6. Signs After Moving Beyond the Breath
1.More open awareness
Attention includes a wider range of experience.
2.Flexible stability
Awareness is steady but not rigid.
3.More complete presence
Experience appears as a unified whole.
4.Reduced attachment
Less dependence on any specific object.
7. Avoiding Misunderstandings
1.Do not abandon the breath too early
Without stability, this leads to distraction.
2.Do not treat it as a higher achievement
It is a natural stage, not a goal.
3.Do not turn it into a concept
It must be directly experienced.
4.Return to awareness itself
Clarity and stability matter more than object choice.
Conclusion
The movement from breath-based practice to going beyond the breath reflects the maturation of awareness. The breath establishes stability and focus; as awareness deepens, it naturally expands to include all experience. True transcendence is not rejecting the breath, but no longer being confined by any object, allowing awareness itself to remain clear, continuous, and open.
